Still the run has been plenty large enough to supply the requirements of the market. In fact It would have been better for the selling Interests had the receipts been smaller. As It was liberal receipts com bined with the big slump In Chicago has brought about a decidedly lower range of prices on most kinds of cattle. There were really not enough fresh cattle on sale this morning to make a market, and the trade partook very largely of the character usual on Friday. That Is, It was a slow, different sort of market devoid ot new or interesting features. Huch cattle as buyers Juat happened to want sold very readily at steady prices, but their wants were lim ited and inferior and common kinds were weak and bard to dispose of. HUH In the end practically everything was cleaned up. The demand from no quarter had very much life, despite the fact that receipts were meager, and the market dragged along all morning without producing anything, like a creditable clearance. In most quar ters killers advanced the argument that local prices are much too high as com pared with eastern coat. Ignoring small sue of receipts. Something like 6.000 head of stock made up the supply, and the bulk consisted of ted and warmed up classes. One big siring of range wethers arrived, but other ofterings that came under western bill ing were few and scattered. Uood sheep met with a better demand than lambs In most cases, but inquiry for matured mut tons, wethers especially, usually pro sen ted a decidedly quiet tone. Early trade In ewe, yearlings, etc., Indicated a market steady to some lower. Attractive fed lambs had to sell at J0..10 early, and strings that were merely warmed up, moved In catch-as-catch-can fashion, ranging at liberal discounts under classes 'that were properly fed, strictly prime lambs would hardly pass the $0.60 mark at present, this limit being well up to other points, 'loppy ewes brought as much as $3.25 and near prime yearlings landed at $4.25. There was little or no business In canner ewes and the wether trade was lale In starting. Only a handful of feeder stock was available and prices showed no quotable change. Feeder ewes sold up to $2.60, and strong weight feeder lambs were wanted around $4.35. Yesterday's purchase on country account amounted to only L300 head, making; a four days' buy of about 28,000 bead. The main features of the trade thus far this week have been a sharp con traction of fed and warmed-up stuff from Iowa and Nebraska sections. On the face of total supply figures It would seem that offerings failed to come up to trade requirements but as a matter of fact the market held more than enough stock to satisfy the demand. Current prices for fat lambs show declines from a week ago of fully a quarter, while fat wethers, ewes and yearlings are closing weak to about 10c lower. Feeders are still Hell ing In notches littlo different from those at last week's close. IKON AST) STEEL TRADE BETTER Prices In Drr Goods Markets Gen erallr Settling; to Loner Level and This Stimulates Con - tract Business. NEW YORK. Nov. 17.-R. O. Dun & Co.'s Weekly Revle wtomorrow will tayi While It Is recoenlzed that business l In a transition period, and transition means change and uncertainty, jet such progress has been made In necessary re adjustments as to impart a better feel ing. This Is especially noticeable In the west, which for some time this year has seemed to be more depressed than tha ea44t, which Is closer to the sensitive financial markets. A larger volume of business Is being carried on and there Is now further buying for the future. The Iron and steel trade Is stimulated by the Increased orders of railroads for tails and rolllnsr stock and by the some what better demand for structural mav- terlals. y The new tonnnire In rails will be con siderably larger than last year. In the piate amnion considerably over loo.oou tons recently have been taken hv the mills in the Chicago and Pittsburgh dis tricts, reflecting tha Increased business in cars, yteel bars are likewise In greater request. Lower quotations induce some Dusinena in other finished products, but quietness still prevails In sheet plates and wire products. l"lg iron is somewhat Improved, buvln of foundry grades being larger In certain directions, although the fixing of quota tions fur 1912 Is still a retarding Influence. Kessemer iron is weaker at Pittsburgh. Demand for 'billets Is not active ami prices are not fully maintained. Ihe Increased demand In retail dry goods stores due to cooler weather has led to more active demand In primary channels for any lot of merchandise ready for quick shipment. Prices are generally 1 settling to lower levels and this Is stimu lating the placing of contract business In a quiet way. Orders for hose, belting and miscellaneaus wide duck are Increasing; and prints, ginghams and bleached cot tons are moving steadily In small lots. Miscellaneous export trade of cotton. goods Is very satisfactory and no cancel lations of China orders have been re ceived. The narrowing margin of profit causing; careful attention to the danger of over-production at the mills. In wool ens and worsteds mills are running a substantial part of machinery and liava been booking more forward business. Overcoatings are well cleaned up. Tha New England shoe factories are quite ac tive and there is quite a demand for leather. nRADSTREKT'S TRADE IlEVIEW First Touch of Winter Weather Helps Retail Trade. NEW YORK, Nov. l-.-Bradstreet's to morrow will say: ljlU'AI. ImnhoMlllp.a t. 1 1 li annu, aw ruin the first touch of real winter weather, in fact, has been a distinct help to retail trade in seasonable wear and there also has been a perceptible Kttmulus irlven to Jobbing re-order trade to fill out depleted siocks. ah parts ot the country have benefited, the northern sections particu larly so. and some improvement Is even noted In southern demand, though low cotton has been a bar there to fullest activity. Holiday trade Is also mora favorably spoken of than at anv tirevlous dato this season. Collections are not much better, but reports note a slight Im provement at some eastern and western centers, thouirh remnlnli.ir iiiuinullf leillv Blow at the south. A monar the Industries the features tr. a rather more optimistic feeling. Iron and steel are more active, though 'prices are no better. Reports of more wide spread nuying or railroad cars, rails and locomotives are current. The coal trade has been benefited by lower temperatures, affecting domestic house demand, anfl by apparently better call for manufactur ing purposes. The woolen goods trade Is more busily employed, and raw wool Is active despite the talk of possible tariff revision Cotton goods are Irregularly affected. Prices tend to ease. Print cloths are slightly lower, but there Is In some quarters more of a disposition to iuko noia lor spring, nie leather trades! are more active at firmer prices and indoor prices tor snoea are Indicated.
