HOGS Hog trade ruled a shade higner
than veteirlav. an Imoroved demand
trom local packers being largely respon
sible. In most respects 11 was merely a
strong market, quite a decent, portion of
business showing advances ot a split
nickel. Only In very rare lnstancea were
load put over the scales at Improved
margin of a flat nickel.
For a Saturday- aesaion, supply was
normal with the movement unusually ac
tive. Something like sixty-five loads
were billed to arrive and all of the early
offering, amounting to about fifty-five
loads, lound an outlet before 10 o clock.
A part of a trainlnad of atock that came
in late cleared slowly at prices that In
dicated more or less weakness.
Larger droves consisted of butcher and
lard animals, the same as recently, and
prepioiee against bauon we.ghts was
ahown by usual discounts. Lung strings
aettled at 80.1111:. 15 and the best weighty
butchers on aale made a top of 86. iv, a
split nickel above yesterday a high price.
During the week the main feature ot
the traoe wa a complete reversul in the
position of heavy and light hog. Weight
i now selling at a premium lor the f.rst
time in many month. Compared with a
wnek ago, light grades show an average
decline of alaMit 10c, while large classes
have scored that much gain, leaving the
feueral market about ateady. Slue of re
ceipts had little or no Influence In deter
mining values, the run be.ng moderate,
but light offerings were mors plentiful,
causing revision lung overdue.

To have been knocked down by 1,he
force of a falling wildcat which ha had
shot, and then violently and danger
ously attacked by the wounded animal,
was the terrible experience of Peter
Shugro In the Ocdonia woods near Proc
tor. Pa. Though Knowing- cowardice to
the extent of running away when his
master was brought to the necessity of
doing personal combat with the Infuri
ated wildcat, yet the sagacity of Shugro's
coon dog lent Itself to securing the help
wnicn ne so badly needed In order to
reach home.
In the very thickest nar of the ravin.
the dog began a furloua "tongulng."
and planted herself at the foot of a
quite tall hemlock, which waa nanioiiv
fire-killed and hence quite opei twenty
feet or more above irrcund. Shugro
could hear the unmistakable sounds of
scraping claws in the first limbs of tho
old tree, and he was quite sure that- he
could distinguish the black heap or form
which he took to bu the
dog went fairly wild with excitement.
t-hugro finally concluded to chance s
shot, and the moment the rifle cracked
there was a yeowl that Shutrro recoa-nlrerl
as that of a member of the cat tribe.
And the next instant the animal, what
ever it -waa. came flying through apace
and landed squarely uin Shugro's head
and shoulders. The weight of the thing
knocked him sprawling upon the ground
among the bual.ee. while the animal still
rlung to him and began a desperate at

In a manner that Shuirn knew,
bringing blood at every contact. In fall

gun had slipped away out of his reach.
It was a case of fighting the anlin.l,
which by this time he knew was either
a catamount or a wildcat, alone. Thia
he did with all the might lie could sum
mon, though the battle was so terrific
that he was unable to get on his feet.
Once In an effort to do so he slipped
and so badly sprained his knee that the
pain of it made him yell lu agony, and
he was practically helpless ao far as
landing was concerned. Ut felt the
blood of the animal splash upon his fac
and hands and knew that the thing must
be desperatry wounded, as wss proven
to b the case, for at the end of ten

Fie on thee, Lucullus. I fear thou art a)
sluggard.
He waa economical. '
Other young blades might run about
to picnics and waste their substance In
riotous absorption of lemonade and plnls
soda pop, but not our hero; for him, tho
peanut roasbpr shrieked In vain. Tha
clarion call of the tamale vender fell upon
deaf ears.

He was educated.
He could write his name quite well and
read most any book printed in words ot
one syllable.
Knowledge Is power.
But It is also peril; It ruined Lucullus,
O, that he had never learned to write his
name.
O, that he had never learned to read til
words of one syllable.
A drummer passed; he handed Lucullus
a book; the book' was filled with pictures,
fierce-looking fellows, stripped for the
fray. Some were "pirates," some "giants,"
one-I' wild bunch called themselves
"Tigers." Lucillus read the book; he gaged f'-'
long upon the pictures, and he was a,
changed man. He carried the book tiir I
work; he slept with it under his plllcV. I
His parents saw the change, and grieved I
tor his plowing average had fallen off
1,000 .to 998 and a fraction. One night while
the tired hero slept his mother slipped
the book from neath his head. She handed
It to father. Father gave one look and
cast it from him with a bitter moan. It
was Spalding's base ball manual and
guide. 9
Then came the crista.
One morning father knocked at Luoullus
door In vain.
He was gone.
So wss his other pants.
So waa the f2 from the bank.

In the same fight a trooper had suf
