STEEL ORDERS SHOW INCREASE Movement of Dry Goods Continues Very 6eody, Though Export to Far Knst Are at Standstill. NEW TORK, Nov. 3.-R. O. Dun A Co.'s Weekly Review of Trade tomorrow will say: The volume of business Is of fair amount and trade continues to extnoit a quickening spirit; in most lint It Is still below producing capacity, generally run- isiing 01 ine supplying 01 uiun.. necessities. The absence of largo unsom stocks on the shelve and the presence, of supplies of credit so great that this country Is now able to nuance me iir.--Ing needs of Europe to an extent that has rnrely If ever been equaled in the past are element of basic strength. Orders for steel products booked rjy tno ead nir lntereMa durlnu October are esti mated to have been the largest, with one exception, in any month this year. The transporting companies also are maum purchases of needed equipment, contracts ror some ten thousand cars naving oeco placed In the last week, while about half that number are under negotiation. In addition part of on order lor on of standard rails has been placed. this business being for 1913 delivery, .-v fair tonnage of structural material Is called for, but plates are Inactive. Steel bars are quiet and quotations weak. There is a slightly better demanu ror wire following tho lower quotations. l'itf iron is weak. The movement of dry goons continues very steady. Exports to the far east are at a standstill, owing to the Chinese com plications, but the miscellaneous traoe is steady and shipments still show a sub stantial Increase over a yeur ago. Woolen, and worsted agencies report a steady de mand for nearly requirements, wun a. slow expansion of forward orders, on which the mills are placing more looms &t work In men's wear novelties have been closely cleaned up and thero is steadier application on Ftafrtcs. while the users of goods are placing orders further ahead and there is an increase in duplicating for spring. As prices worn lower on coi ton yarns business expands, while tho call for worsted yarns Is well maintained for nearby use. Footwear Jobbers are holding off until assured that the late advances asked by manufacturers are to be maintained and are not disposed to place more than sup plementary contracts for winter goodw; business for spring delivery ha not been n very large volume es yet. moes hu.j skins are fairly active and firmer, uui there is less doing In leather. BUADSTREKT'S TRADE REVIEW Retail Trade Stimulated Thronghont Country. NEW TORK, Nov. 3. Bradstreet's to. morrow will say: Retail trade, which now occupies the center of the stage as regards distribu tion, has been greatly stimulated by colder weather over a wider area of coun try. In fact, reports regarding this branch or busineyH ditipiay a better tenor than they have since last spring. 1 ... ....... V. .. .......... ,,.11.. ... it r r 4 lie luinuvur lias uccii r.-,i-..,i, j , , in such lines as dry goods, rubbers, boots and shoes, furs, clothing and furnish ings, and the long-deferred breaking up of stocks now seems to be under way. Jobbing lines report a fairly good vol ume of orders, though it is still too early to expect much benefit from recent cold weather. Road sales sent to wholesale, holusen show a little Improvement and it Is significant that woolen goods for spring shipment and advances aro noted In sev eral lines. But in a general sense wholesale trade outside of holiday lines Is relatively light. At the same time there are ei.ougli cross currents to prevent uniiorniuy. Thus country merchants continue to buy In a very conservative way. Industry re mains rather quiet and the low price of cotton Is i.uvlng a depressing effect on trade and collections In the soutn. oi course the low prlco of the crop means cheap supplies for the textile mill In dustry and consequently more activity later, while the size of the yield presages a good export trade. Sales ot cotton goods for future account are hampered bv the belief of consumers mat tne pries situation Is unstable. Leather is firm and there Is more dispo sition to cover distant requiiements. (Special.) The Jury in the case of Hans Larson, who sued the Milwaukee railroad for $21, 000 damages for the loss of a foot, sus tained while trying to catch a train at Mobrldge, which ha alleged pulled out three minute after stopping, when the conductor had told him tt would remain thero fifteen minutes, brought In a ver dict for $2,300. Oa motion of tb defense a stay of sixty days was granted to allow time for perfecting an appeal. Larson Is tha man who was a passenger on a Milwau kee train and when the train reached Mobrldge, feeling thirsty, he got off to get a glass of beer after the conductor had told him the train would stay thero fifteen minutes. 'When the train whistled to leav the station Larson hurried to catch it. but It was already moving, and he fell beneath the wheels, losing a foot. Larson contends the train started Inside of two or three minutes instead of fifteen minutes. An intei eating f.ature of the ease was the fact that of the twelve Jurors eleven came to South Dakota from Wisconsin. The twelfth man was from Canada. It was not apparent, however, that th native state of the jurors had anything to do with the decision they reached. Several of them favored giving Larson a larger amount and one placed It as low as $1,000. - FLANIGAN MUST ANSWER TO CHARGE OF ARSON PIERRE, S. D., Nov. J. (Special.)
