operators were bearish today, but stocks
were fairly strong. Wall street had not
recovered from the effect of the I'nlted
State steel dissolution suit and the dis
cussion In court of the American Tobacco
reorganisation plan added to Its nervous
ness That stocks advanced despite these
conditions was due chleflv to short cover
ing. Short selling Is believed to have
played a larger part In Friday's severe
slump than wss apparent at the time,
and operators today found the market In
an oversold condition. Stocks were In
small supply and prices advanced when
ever any materiel demand appeared.
The American Tobacco hearing was the
center of Interest and the stock advanced
l! points on the curb, although It lost
part of Its gain later. The bonds were
heavy early m the day, but subsequently
rallied.

ery which bean last week. It rose stead
ily until It was 14 above Saturday's

C. Bennett and B. A. Cumins have sent
a grading force to their tract of about
00 acres on Bad river, a short distance
southwest of Fort Pierre, to get R Into
shape for Irrigation work next year. The
ditching and leveling will bo done this
winter, and the pumping plant for taking
water from Bad river will be Installed
before next spring, to be ready, for opera
tions at the beginning of the' net crop
season. Their work Is a part of a gen
eral plan to be carried out by a number
of different owners of land In that vicinity
to put the lower part of Bad river valley
Into a garden spot through the use of
the water of Bad river.
