NEW YORK. Oct. 30-fltock market
operators were bearish today, but stocks
were fairly strong. Wall street had not
recovered from the effect of the I'nlted
State steel dissolution suit and the dis
cussion In court of the American Tobacco
reorganisation plan added to Its nervous
ness That stocks advanced despite these
conditions was due chleflv to short cover
ing. Short selling Is believed to have
played a larger part In Friday's severe
slump than wss apparent at the time,
and operators today found the market In
an oversold condition. Stocks were In
small supply and prices advanced when
ever any materiel demand appeared.
The American Tobacco hearing was the
center of Interest and the stock advanced
l! points on the curb, although It lost
part of Its gain later. The bonds were
heavy early m the day, but subsequently
rallied.
l"nltd State Steel continued the recov
ery which bean last week. It rose stead
ily until It was 14 above Saturday's
close. J.ste In the day It lust part of Ita
gain.
The market sa a wiulc was well above.
Saturday s final range most of the day.
I'nlon Pacific, Canadian Pacific Atchi
son, Kile first preferred. Northern Pa
cific and Missouri Pacific, the standaid
ralleis, were conspicuous by their strength
and some of the Industrials made good
gains. ,
Report from the west told of a some
what better feeling In business circle, sl-
tnough lallrna l tonnage la receding.
The general bond market Ignored the
early depression In American Tobacco
Issues and showed Increased firmness.

NKW YORK. Oct. ."A COFFKK-Fu-
turt'g opened stea.lv at a decline of 10 to
IHjinta pnder heavy liquidation, Kuro-

which was encouraged by lower Kuropean
rabies and rumors of financial trouble In
Mraxll. The Koealp was that a Itra.llliin
film which had been short iiauwO baas,
showing a mini.y loss of about 2.QVhOQ
francs, has made a settlement for l.imO.
0Ot franc and this seemed to be taken
locully as indicating that a supporting
factor had been removed. At any rate
the market soon sold about 20 to 34 points
under the clcslng figures of Saturday,
with Iiecember contracts declining to
It.iif.c, or about 110 points below the
recent high record, while later deliveries
showed losses of from 1VI to lHi points
from the best level of the season. Tim
decline was checked around this level
by fealltlng on the part of recent sellers,
while offerings nlo became rather
lighter and prices rallied several poluta
from the lowest, but awakened again In
the late trading under renewed offerings
for Imth accounts, which were R.coin
panled hy rumors of an easier tone In
the spot situation and expectations of a
bearish world's visible supply statement
early next month. The close whs Heady
