Th Vnin Puclflo railroad maua'ers Br breaking- old ties In New York C'.ty. A decrat of ansolula divorce from tlie iultabU Lit Insuranco company, - re cently antered, prwokes this outpouilnx tf pathos and ramlnUctnce In tlio Wall Street Journal: One day tack la 17 an li:sirnlflcarit In-U-ieet In I'nlun 1'aclfle humbly souglit ot.t the Kqultable agnt and conlra. t.d fur a dusty room or to where, undis turbed, ho nilfclit urt over the frayed papers of the conKretslonal rloner trail across the country. Somebody' had faith that among those paiers was material worthy of a safe drpusit box. l:. fore It ctune down to New Tork, I'nlun Tacillc's limJij uartori had been harboird In the Ainea building In lloston, while lis lilmluai teri were allowed to wend their u!srouratjtd way toward dis lntt'ratii.n. l'cihaii It was the lntcl lcvtiuil lmio ovor the old New linsland lnctropolln that rovented the Boston f Inane ii r cf tl.at lUy from peering Into the dlaiaut unc.iuih west and seeing what trot i vire eo n to beckon, l'.o&ton knows n-.oro than any other city la the world aboiit the post, 'l'lure were one or two of Its keener vlaloni'd who stood by the railroad, luci.lng It with thc!r all, but unalile to pry Into the douM'.ng treas uiies of their Near Kngland associates. The lnevilablo hapitrned. I'nlun Taciflc toppled over Into New York. How Tklaua Cirew. Kit by bit the small offlres In the Iviult itble building were esteuded. The fcboit Line and the navagatlon conuauies were brought back Into the fold. Th lnslEmlfl cant Intorest In I'nlon "l'soirio couldn't see the west -clearly, from New York; either. Therefore ' it went west. While there.1t arranged to part with tome t-'i.-OuC.CoO for tails, cara and labor. In li th Southern l'aclflo was annexed. SUM mora office room. A thousand miles of derunrt railroad had become liOuO miles of railrond. It had water lines from New York to New Orleans and from the California roast acio.s th Taclflo to I'l.lna. -It had coal lands and oil lands and timber lands. Its small safety de posit box had grown Into vaults. Into them In 1 It crsually throw some 1'jO.. OUO.OU) ot securities of other railroads. And with theso changes 130 Kroudway no longer meant th fchiullabl Ufa build ing. It meant th headquarters of K. II. llarriiiin. Th discovery that he had acquired half the stock of tlio Kiultable Ufa was, but the building of a few of the tnsny leaves already piloted. Th obscure tenant had made the Kiultuble a mere basis from which there promised to grow th most powerful XlnaucuU orgaulsw tu the world. Then came a period. With the subsequent sale of th Ilarrl man estate Kquttable stock to J. P. Morgan the giant tide turned back to sea. Now Union Pacific Is to close up the offices that grew from an obscure room to three floors of a great bulidnlg and move away. The Harrlmun roads cannot with respect to th past pay rent to Morgan. Perhaps th turning of I'nlun Pacific's Kquitable pajre will glvo respec table sllenc for a tlm to the Intermit tent secret that Morgan Is quietly buying I'nlon l'aclfio control. There Is more In the passing ot the I'nlon Pacific offices up street. K. II. Harrlman cannot be pictured making that move. If he had left the Kquitable building It would have been to move two blocks south, not north. Certainly I'nlon I"uciflo stockholders have little to regret that this was truo. Tliose tij.OOi.OuO cold profit out of the Northern l'aclfio stock purchaae have put I'nlon Pacific In a gulden state of Us own. But the duy for such railroading la no more. Thar stand the change. Uarriman at 120 Proadway. Lovett at 165 Broadway. Uarriman cn the fourth floor near the ground. Lovett on tho twenty-fifth floor. And yet there la no reason to believe that with the change that has come over our times In tho short space since It arrived In New York, the t'nton 1'aclflc Is after all getting ncuier to the ground by going far toward the roof. The one Idea dominating the present Union Pa cific management, as declared In then columns shortly after Lovett took t rehis. was to opcrute the properly nut uj a treasury but as a railroad. Certainly Mr. Uarriman knew some thing about the rei4iieiiients of a rail road, too, as I'nlon Pacific competitors became keenly aware. Put since then public sentiment hits been shifting. Be fore many years 'I'nlon Pacific will be less of a coul miner, less of an oil baron, lees of a lumber king, less ot a security owner, and, by the token of an ever grow lntL west, Ktill more of a railroad. There are new days ahead, perhaps as full of premlbe as those I'nlon lu fio 1 leaving. That corner desk oa th fourth floor of the Kquitable building would have been llarrlman's to the end. Kor new achieve ments new leaders, and a leader must have his own workshop. It. S. Lovett has already made a considerable mark with the I'nlon Pacific pen. Certainly he Is entitled to look out upon the results through a window of his own where the I-'oston weakness Is avoided, where the future Is not burled In the past. -i RAID ON A RATTLER CAVE ManUaiai Ptle I p Ills; Score- la Kffort of l'.stermlua-tloa. A ponso of extern. lnatlon was organ ised and at least ) rattlesnakes of all sixes were killed In Katlleanake Uulch, near Three Porks, Mont. The source of the hundred. of the rep tiles from which the gulch tukes Its nam was found In the ahaie of a vniull cave, discovered by accident by Amos Smiih. Mr. Smith unified his friends La Tui i'oiks and uearly a hundred armed men and boya proceeded to the seen armedw-ith all variety of weapons. For three lours th battie raged and at Its closo 20 rattlers wer counted strewn on the ground, and not n man had been bitten. The reptiles, were slightly dormant, owing to the coolness, but when aroused would sally forth from the cave. Clubs, shotguns and rifles were used In the slaughter. When no more snakes emerged from th cve a repeating shot gun was discharged Into It and about fifty more were dragged forth. Some of the specimens killed measured more than three feet long, while others were only a few Inches In length. Some of the larger one will be stuffed and placed on exhibition. For years th farmers In that neighborhood have been bothered bjr the great number of rattle snakes. The gulch of that name was llt rally alive with them. The den discov ered by Mr. Smith Is on tho Peeple'a ranch. After cleaning ut this den It was decided to continue the crusade and there are a number of men and boys scouring th community for more snakes, Anaconda Standard.
