Ind (cations point to the fact that the public Is with The Bee in its advocacy of doing away with the street fair and carnival features of the Ak-Sar-Ben week of fall festivities. The editorial in the Sunday Bee, denouncing the Immoral character of many of the attractions ot the street fair and the acts of rowdyism upon the grounds was generally dis cussed, most people commending The Bee on its courage to take a positive atand in the matter. Discussing the street fair features of the Ak-Sar-Ben festivities, .Chief ot Police Donahue said: "The Bee is right on the position that it has taken. The street fair has out lived the purposes for which it was In tended and ought to be cut out. It has degenerated until it has become a place where the tough- elen.ent of rue city congregates, taking liberties that would not be tolerated for an Instant on the streets of the city. On account of the numerous characters wni go upon the grounds, the respectable people of the city generally do not care to visit the carnival. Each year the conditions seem to grow worse. "The police are assigned to the grounds, but we cannot spare enough of them to maintain order, expeclally during the evenings when the large crowds are in attendance. Demand tor Cleanllnesa. 'In my Judgment it is time to do away with the street fair features and pro vide the town people and the visitors with some kind of clean and wholesome amusement. The parades are splendid, bnt : the carnival features are decidedly bad." Secretary Burgess or the Board of Edu cation said: "The street fair ha become a blot upon the annual festival week. Another one should not be permitted. In fact, the whole thing has become a 'fake1 made up of a lot of the cheapest kind of cheap shows, giving a lot of irresponsible par ties an opportunity of gulling the people out of their money. 'This, however, la not the most objec tionable feature of the street fair. Each year the shows are attended by thousands of school children, They go to these places and there witness shows and see picture that are' of tha most degrading kind. Their young minds are poisoned and no one can tell what the result may be on future lives of these boys and girls. 'Then, too, no man of respectability cares to take his wife to the place, as she is almost sure of being Insulted by the roughs who congregate upon th grounds, apparently running things to Milt them selves. 'Bv all means, the nianageia of the Ak-Sar-Ben festivities whould do away with the fair features that have become difguKttng to the respectable people of the qll.v."
