The radical defeat of reciprocity yester
day In the Canadian vote put all wheat
operations on a different basis today.
The vote removed at once an element of
great uncertainty which has depressed
the trade for months and set aside the
chlrf bar argument. The effect w-as
very bullish, prices at the opening being
well above yesterday's close). With the
Canadian wheat shut out there w-ill be
an .Increased demand for hard winter
wheat, maklnqr a strong domestic situa
tion. There Is little doubt but that the un
certainty in wheat has held corn from
advancing. With wheat on the upturn
and all uncertainty removed It will not be
surprising to see a renewal of bull opera
tlons and a broader corn trade. The cash
situation In stron? enough to be a helping
influence.
The decided defeat of the reclproctly
hill sent, wheat values skyward. Buying
ws general and urgent from all quarters.
Cash wheat was So to 4c higher.
Corn feit the advance in wheat and
while no direct news was In evidence the
situation has been strong enough for
some time to warrant an advance. Cash

millions of bushels by holders realising
profits the wheat market whirled upward
today again and again. The defeat of
reciprocity formed the sole reason. After
an exciting dsy there was a nervous
close 2TvjJJc to Hc higher than last night
snd within He of top figures reached.
Oats, which would also, have been sub
ject to free competition from Canada,
made a net advance of lTc to Hfil'ic.

Hua-e stocks of whest held In Chlcapo
afforded an explanation of why the hulse
in prices turned out to be less sensa
tional here than elsewhere. Nevertheless
unusual activity end strength were
shown from the outset. Some sales ex
hibited a gain of more than 2c In the
first thirty seconds of trading. Profit
taking was equally prominent, and for
hours It seemed as though the extraordlr
nary force of unloading would prevent
anything ltke the advance which had been
predicted that might be looked for fol
lowing the victory of the opposition to
reciprocity. A directly contrsry result
of the election had been expected' by
traders In general and had been dis
counted In full beforehand. Tne news
from Canada therefore had all the force
of a eenulne wumrlse and was being felt
more rather than less severely as the
session drew to an end. During tne last
hour, Indeed, stop-loss buying reached
an acute stare and brought about the
sharpest advenes of the day. Some reac
tion took nlsce. hut the tone In the end
was decidedly unsettled. Between ths
Initial and the final transaction Decem
ber ranged from OTtc to 9Hc and closed
tkffSc up at 9So.
Oats closed firm at nearly the highest
figures touched efter the buls-e began.
One of the features of the session was
frantic covering by shorts here who had
bought at Winnipeg and who were whip
sawed completely. Top and bottom fig
urea touched by the December option
were 47'4c and 4Hc, with last sales 2c
net higher at 474c.
Corn was not directly Involved 1n the
reciprocity Issuo. What strenirth devel
oped was of a purely sympathetic sort.
As sn offset ths weather was better and
country selling quite liberal. December

NEW YORK, Sept. 22 Wild trading In
United States Steel again threw the mar
ket into confusion today. Liquidation
was on even a larger scale than yester
dsr. The railway share no longer stayed
the market, but broke with the Indus
trials. During the first hour United
Ststes fcteel lost 6 points to 534, and the
preferred 2 to 103.
In the second hour It became sppsrent
that the tide had been turned. Pricea
rose essily and board traders were forced
to retreat.
Another selllna movement was Inaug
urated in the afternoon, but was of much
smaller proportions.
The copper shares were attacked with
especrnl severity and lost heavily. Ameri
can Smelting declining nearly 5 pointa.
The depresaion was only temporsry,
however. Toward the end of the day
United States Steel rose to 87 snd prices
generally, except for the Hill, copper and
steel shares, showed small net gains for
the day. United States Steel subsequently
sold off, closing st 66, a net loss of 24.
bales of United States Steel durina; the
iirsi nair hour amounted to 245 0H0 shares.
The dey's total was 717.S00, the largest
amount of any stock handled In a day
since April 16, 1B02, when 864,5i0 shares of
Southern Railway changed hands. The
day's total for all stocks was 1,393,600, ths
largest of the year.
In sen era I the selling was ascribed to
liquidation by Investors who believed
that the 8teel corporation would be forced
to dissolve either as the result of a suit
Instituted by the Department of Justice
or as a result of action Initiated bv the
corporation Itself to ward off such s
sutt.
Defeat of the Canadian reciprocity bill
w-as to some extent responsible for the
sharp break In the railroad stocks. The
Hill shares were most affected, flreat
Northern preferred lost 44 points, North
ern Pacific 2V Minneapolis. ' St. Paul A
fault Ste. Marie , and Canadian Ta
cifle 14. Canadian Pacific on the re
bound rose 6 pointa.
Trading In bonds was on a lanre scale,
but that market was not greatly dis
turbed. Bonds were generally heavy.
United States Steel 5s advanced 4. Total
sales, par value. $2,8.71,000. United States
bonds were unchanged on call.

followed, but part of this gain was wiped
eut before noon. At midday the tone was
weak and prices ranged from unchanged

The market on beef steers this morn
inn was without any n or interesting
features. There was a fair demand that
was sufficiently large to clean up the few
cattle in sight. The prices paid were
without note-worthv change as compared
with yesterday snd were around lo$i6c
higher than the close ot last wee.
'ihe market on cows snd heifers wes
also devoid of new or interesting features
and there were very few on sale. Such
cattle as were in sight generally changed
hands in fair season In ths morning. As
was the case with beef steers prices are
around 1041 lie higher than last week's
close.
Stock cattle and feeders have kept pace
with kilting cattle ana tney too are clos

HOGS Trade In hofe was a "swsy
back" sffair, opening very nearly steady
ou a few loads of shipper stuff, becom
ing a big nickel lower and closing with
practically all of the mld-sesalon dsellnj
regained. It was a uncertain business
from ths start, with ths demand rather
quiet, but more or less spasmodic. As
compared with yesterday s sversge, big
buik of sales showed a flat nickel loss.
Size of receipts still proved a dead In
fluence in buying circles as the fresh
declins was forced on s run of only slaty
six loads. Ordinary butchers mad up
the big end of receipts and plenty, of
w tlght was the general rule. There were
no lacon hogs on sale that could be de
scribed as strictly choice.
Shippers furnished a little better sup.
port than recently, but it was nothing to
brag about. Something like twelve or
fourteen loads were purchased on out
side account, quality offerings drawing
the best demsnd.
Spreads were merged as ususl snd
Isrger droves were put up at W fAJ 60.
Best bscon weights on sale dropped to
16.70, the lowest top on record since Juns,
a mor.tn mat claims se ts as nign price.
Yard were not completely cleared until
well along toward 11 o'clock.
Representstlve sales
snd a very quiet demand from all quar
ters, conditions In the sheep snd lamb
trade were much the same as on yester
dsy. Supply was estlmsled at 10,000 head
and Included a very fair proportion of
desirable killing lambs. Fat sheep wero
scarce. Very few stale offerings were
available in any branch of the market,
as yesterday's run cleared In good shape,
leaving a situation that favored sellers
more or less. Stesdy prices on both
feeder snd fst stock were usually main
tained after movement finally started, but
Inquiry at no time seemed very active.
The fresh run rounds off a five days
total of about 136.000 head, but even
though this agarregats Is really large It
shows a loss of almost 80.000 heed from
last week's receipts. Decreased ship
ments have been reflected In prices, and
the demand on recent dsys was generally
lively and bread. Fat lamha of choice
quality touched the $5.76 mark on two of
three occasions and anything closing at
$5.55 and less lacks finish "Seconds'
that are selling: below $5.26 at present

try buyers.

ewes sold from $1 86 downward. Feeder
yearlings st $4.40 la also a creditable sale,
but they have been hard to find ss a gen
