CATTLE Receipts of cattle, as usual on
a Friday, were very light, only twenty
eight car being reported In. Th total
for th week foots up a :w head more
than laat week, making It th heaviest
week's run of the season to date. BUU re
ceipts are not large, as there haa been a
falling off for th fiv days as compared
with the corresponding period a year ago
of almost 10,000 head
With a total of twenty-eight ears of
cattle In sight there wer really not enough
of any one kind on eale to mak a test pf
price. Aout all that caa be said Is to
call It the usual alow and uninteresting
Friday's market.
Beet steer for the current day wer
about steady. Best grade of both comfeds
and westerns have been fully steady for
the week. On the other hand, the common
and inferior grades, that Is, thin and poor
homed cattle, of which there has been a
large supply, are 1K7260 lower tor the week.
Th beet cows and heifer have sold
about steady this week, but the medium
kind have eased off a little under the In
fluence of the decline oa common kind of
beef tear., .
The beet light and beat fleshy feeders
have shown very little change In prices
this week, but inferior and undesirable
kind are safely 152u lower.

bat general feeling appeared steady and
opening tales lndlcsted a quotably un
changed market. Choice fat lambs are still
selling up as high aa 86 SO and a t 00 top la
recognised la the list of quotations. Fslrly
good rradp are cone too active at tf.ob
and downward.
As compared with laat week close
prices on tat lambs tbftw heavy losses of
fully ftV7.V while fat sheep and y?arllngt
an cloking steady to 10c lower In spots.
Feeder lambs chow an average decline of
about 80 cents and feeder shu.'p have held
up well, current prices ruling weak to
hardly wort than Uc off Big bulk of re
ceipt conflated of lambs. moUy fenders.
Volume of feeder business lately tells the
story of corn belt demsnd better thao mere
words. Speculators have helped consider
ably in making clearance, however, and
the accumulation In this quarter at pres
ent la rather heavy Thrifty feeder lambs
are In best demand at $5 00(iol6. while
feeder sheep and yearlings have been good
sellers at all time.
Next Monday Is Labor day, of course,
and as th demand from packers is gener
ally slack when killing gangs are off duty,
a limited run will probably be large enough
to meet requirements.

lafleeace oa Market.
NEW YORK. Sept. lThe demand for
stockt today wss sufficient to advance
the level of prices quite generally and
many of th active lasue rose from 1
to. 2 points. Trading waa on a much
smaller basis than on any other day since
the turmoil brought about by the heavy
liquidation which began early In August.
Buying reflected chiefly scattered cover
ing of shorts, due largely to the fact that
a triple holiday ws at hand. '
Advances were recorded In most cases
at the opening and were maintained
through th seaaion. Lehigh Valley, which
was forced down abruptly by heavy telling
on recent days, developed ttrength today.
Minneapolis & St. Louis added 3 points to
lu recent advance. In connection with
this movement a report which lacked
official confirmation was circulated that
a project waa afoot to liDk the Hawloy
eyitam with the Canadian road, this form
ing a new through rout from Canada to
the Gulf ot Mexico and the southeastern
seaboard. Chesapeake Ohio was another
strong point in the railroad list
The government cotton report, showing
a September oondition below the ten-year
average, caused a temporary setback on
th stock market, but its Influence was
not pronounced.
Trading in Standard Oil was brought to a
halt on the "curb" today by the closing
yesterday of the transfer books of the
corporation for dissolution proceedings In
accordance with the decree ot the supreme
court. It was Impossible to form an In
telligent Idea a to the worth of Standard
Oil of New Jersey stock divested of its
subsidiaries. For the stock "ex-Sub-sldiaries"
360 was bid and It was offered at
440. The traders could reach no common
basis, however, and no business wa trsn
acted In the shares.
Bonds were firm. Total sales, par value,
$1,301,000. United States bonds wer un

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Feat area ot tit Trading- and Closing
Prices on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, Sept. 1 Uneasiness concern
ing Morocco furnished the wheat market
today with a backbone. Accordingly prices
at the close were He to Qo higher than
last night. Latest trading In corn varied
from a"Ao off to hie ; advance. Oats
showed Htf Hc decline, and (provisions were
strung out from 17V4C less cost to a rise of
16c
Fresh suggestions of warlike possibili
ties in the clashes regarding northwest
Africa were kept before the eyes of Wheat
tiywcuA'.ors all day and made th ton
of the market firm. On this side ot the
Atlantic, too, th bulls wer favored. The
Canadian northweat sent word of untimely
rain, and at least equally important lo
cally wa the fact that the deliveries her
on September contract appeared to eaue
no inconvenience. However, the weight
of hedged grain made a large load for
prices to carry and prevented any radical
advance Taking th session as a whole.
December ranged from MQMa, and
closed at 94c a gain of &c net
' Liverpool export -sales helped corn for
a while, but later - the market relapsed
Into dullness and caused nrlces to sag.
Wuihu ajnti oroD raiooi'ta were favorable.
December fluctuated between tfVo and 63c,
With the CIO easy at tu-rum6:, a nei lues
of a shade. Cash grade wer firm. No.
8 yellow was quoted at 6oH3o.
Oat suffered from heavy deliveries and
from profit-taking on the part of longs
Carrier withdrawing from th arkt
brought about a widening of the September
discount High and low points touched by
December wer ttle and 4&o. The close,
4674o, showed a loss ot "o, compared with
last night. ,
The provision market had a tendency up
ward. Pork closed 174c oft to 6c up, lard
was dearer by I0t3i2lh to Uloc, and
ribs more expensive by WSlic.
