Leo Wilson of the Young Men's Christian association won the Inter-club champion ship Saturday afternoon, defeating Ralph Newell of the same tennis club In 8-4, 7-R, 8-8, before a crowd of Interested tennis enthusiasts on the Rod and Gun club tennis courts. Wilson surprised not only Newell's sup porters, but also hie own personal friends by the manner In which he played the game In winning his championship and the trophies. He was out to win that cham pionship' and never before had the lanky "T" athlete played such a brilliant smash ing game on the tennis courts. Newell haa always defeated Wilson In practice matches on the association courts and ex pected a victory Saturday, although he knew that his opponent was playing the game better In this tournament than he ever had formerly. Wilson's game was varied, both In the attack and defense plan. He played the net and back In the court equally well, although his great height gave him an advantage over his smaller opponent when In net play. His long arms reached with ease to cover both sides from the spot In which ha stood. High lobs he easily returned and killed many a one with a deadly accuracy for the far corners of the court. The first set Newell bid fair to win, his cutting stroke proving hard of solution for Wilson, but the champion pulled out by a narrow margin In 8-4. The second set Newell was even closer on the heels of the other man and a deuce set resulted, Wilson proving himself the better man In a plnoh and winning hy 7-5. The real battle of the matoh came In the last set, which Wilson finally won In 8-6. Both men were on their mettle and plaved cautiously, Newell placing the ball with more car than Wilson because he recog nised the aot that he had few points to lose. When the set had reached deuce the gallery sat breathless while the pair fought point after point and the game waxed the hotter all the time. The pace proved too much for Newell and Wilson went out In a whirlwind finish of the last two games. Championship doubles and consolation rounds will oontlnue this week. A high wind blew throughout all the afternoon, making It hard to control the ball and raising and blowing the dust in a disagreeable manner. Th nmaii how ever, stuck bravely, Interested In the match. Preliminary and first round matches were played In the championship doubles and In the championship ingles, but the high wind prevented a number of the players from playing.
