moved In a way suggestive of further
liquidation after which they recovered only
to decline again. The undertone was tin
certain and clearly reflected present agri
cultural commercial, industrial and politi
cal conditions.
There eeems to be Increasing doubt hi
banking quarters regarding the revival of
general trade In the fall, and the labor sit
uation, particularly In Ita application to the
transportation companies. Is looming large.
'1 here were no definite developments In this
latter connection today, but advices from
various sections pointed to the possibility
of strikes or lockouts on the Harrlmao lines,
the Gould system and the Rock Island and
Illinois Central roads.
Other news of the day Included tn an
nouncement that the Atchison road pur
poses to Issue 3140.000,009 of common stock
and some more convertible bonda. The
stock. It Is said, la not Intended for Im
mediate uae, but rather as an emergency
measure. '
Returns of the crop reports were In some
cases more disappointing than was ex
pected and the publication was followed by
another raid on the market which sent
Union Pacific under yesterday with sharp
declines In the grain csrrler. The decline
was orderly st first, but in the last few
minutes the selling gathered such bugs
proportions that prices crumbled away to
the lowest levels of the present movement.
There were faint rallies which failed to ar
rest the fall to any appreciable extent and
the close was extremely weak, with the
short Interest In control of the situation.
The bond market was directly affected by

CATTLE Receipts of cattle wore large
again today. 193 cars being reported in.
This brings the total for the three days this
week up to 23,000 head as agalnat 19.900 head
for the same period a year ago. Tba mar
ket this morning was In splendid condition
as viewed from a seller's standpoint and
entirely satisfactory. The big bulk of all
the cattle In the yards, sold sn very good
season In the forenoon.
Buyers of beef steers were all out In the
yards early In the morning and evidently
bad good orders In hand. As a reault the
market opened early and the trade was
active at prices around 10c higher for the
best cattle and with tha common and
medium kinds at least steady. A new high
top was made, several loads of cornfeds
selling up to $7.26.
Cows and heifers were active and strung,
the better grades selling around 10c higher.
Canners and undesirable kinds were at
least ateady.
Good feeders were wanted and the market
on anything of that description waa fairly
active, with prices at least a dime higher.
This means that tha market on good feed
ers is around a quarter higher than last
week.

Within ten hours after she had been
struck by the fangs of a rattlesnake on
the homestead of her father, living near
the little town of Clearfield, Tripp county,
llubertina Agnes Roufs, aged 2 'A years,
died ut a hotal in Colome, where she had
be n tiilten for medical treatment. The
little Kill end her 4-year-old brother went
to the barn and watched their father put
a team of mules away. When he tame
out he Marled for the house with the boy,
th" little. Rlrl remaining behind near a pile
of plunk. About two minutes after the
father started for the house the little girl
fell down, and arising to her feet ran cry
ing to the houne, saying she had hurt her

on her hand, one resembling a small blue
