CHICAGO, Aug. .-While awaiting the
government crop report wheat ownera to
day took profit and let advances In prices
he more than wiped out. The Washington
news turned out to be better for the bulle
then had been looked for but came too
late to have an Influnnoe before tomorrow.
The cloning uuotatlona were to o lower
than last night. Corn wound up unchanged
to He higher, oata Wo dearer to hio down
and hog products varied from 6c ad
vance to l?4o decline.
The eurprlee which the government re
port gave the wheat trade waa In the
lowering of the spring crop condition from

a loxa of Vi.0O0.0U0 huehitla. To many deal
ers this showing proved rather startling.
A source of additional dtnnmy, however,
was the knowlodge that spring wheat had
been damaged further since AUKHt 1,
when the official report was compiled.
During exchange hours prions were lifted
by sdvlces of frost danger and of widen
ing Injury from black rust. The market
was helped also by news of export busi
ness at noon. Unloading on the part of
holders, though, reached proportions too
great for the market tn sustain. As a re
sult the closing tone was weak. Ilet ween
the opening and cloae Hrptemher fluctu
ate, from l VsfC'I to .1c, finishing Vi(o"c
net lower at !2',4:t2V.
Corn received support because of the
lightness of receipts. September ranged
from 4 to iic, with the close a nhnde
lip at fcic even. Cush grades were firm.
No. 2 yellow waa quoted at tiuriHc.
Oris had no Independent action. High
and low points touched by the September
option were 4l44j4:1i and 4l,c. The close,
41MM-C, showed a gain of a sixteenth over
luat night.
A let-up In demand by Investor brought
about a break In hog produc'k. At the
close pork was at mil f out frooi Vo de

NEW TORK. Aug. -In Ita salient feat
ures today a stock market sa largely a
repetition of the preceding days. Prices)
moved In a way suggestive of further
liquidation after which they recovered only
to decline again. The undertone was tin
certain and clearly reflected present agri
cultural commercial, industrial and politi
cal conditions.
There eeems to be Increasing doubt hi
banking quarters regarding the revival of
general trade In the fall, and the labor sit
uation, particularly In Ita application to the
transportation companies. Is looming large.
'1 here were no definite developments In this
latter connection today, but advices from
various sections pointed to the possibility
of strikes or lockouts on the Harrlmao lines,
the Gould system and the Rock Island and
Illinois Central roads.
Other news of the day Included tn an
nouncement that the Atchison road pur
poses to Issue 3140.000,009 of common stock
and some more convertible bonda. The
stock. It Is said, la not Intended for Im
mediate uae, but rather as an emergency
measure. '
Returns of the crop reports were In some
cases more disappointing than was ex
pected and the publication was followed by
another raid on the market which sent
Union Pacific under yesterday with sharp
declines In the grain csrrler. The decline
was orderly st first, but in the last few
minutes the selling gathered such bugs
proportions that prices crumbled away to
the lowest levels of the present movement.
There were faint rallies which failed to ar
rest the fall to any appreciable extent and
the close was extremely weak, with the
short Interest In control of the situation.
The bond market was directly affected by
the movement of stocks Total sales, par
value. ai.9U2.O00.

week up to 23,000 head as agalnat 19.900 head

ket this morning was In splendid condition

entirely satisfactory. The big bulk of all
the cattle In the yards, sold sn very good

Buyers of beef steers were all out In the

bad good orders In hand. As a reault the
market opened early and the trade was
active at prices around 10c higher for the
best cattle and with tha common and
medium kinds at least steady. A new high
top was made, several loads of cornfeds
selling up to $7.26.
Cows and heifers were active and strung,
the better grades selling around 10c higher.
Canners and undesirable kinds were at
