NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Number of Hew Low Records for Re cent Movements Established. GENERAL DECLINES ARE EVIDENT la Early Hoar af Seeslna List Mast, festa Soma Dlspoaltloa Toward Recovery Foar Men the Faa Advaacee. NEW TORK, Aug. 4.-The tock market today continued It retrograde tendency by establishing a number of new low records for present movements. All classes of tncka rartlclnated In the decline, which for the first time bore the marks of pre cipitate liquidation from various sources, together with a very liberal admixture of short selling. The Ijear party was mor or less aggressive throughout. In the early hours of the session the list manifested some disposition toward recovery, being aided In this direction by the better demand for our shares in London, where International stocks made general gains, but the absence of anything like hearty support gave renewed encour agement to the short accounts, which main tained It advantage to the close. Standard OH' continued weaknesa In the outside market. Its net loss today being 16 points, was again a factor, and a sensa tional upward move In cotton options, to which stocks are always more or less sus ceptible, was viewed with some concern. Offerings of United States Steel were on a larger scale today than for some time, aggregating over 200.000 shares. That stock was the weakest of the active group, mak ing a net decline of 21 points. Other Issues that showed pronounced heaviness and made severe loeses Include the electrical stocks. American Smelting, the coppers, the Hartiman and Hill share, Reading, I-hlgh Valley, Texas company, Inter Metropolitan preferred. Brooklyn Union Oas and Laclede Oas, decline ranging from 2 to 4 points. Final prices were at the day' low level, the whole list reflecting a state of de moralisation. Following the close of the market It wa reported that much of the selling resulted from the closing of ac counts because of Impaired margins. In the general excitement of the dav little attention was paid to the money market, the feature of which win an advance In fmir months funds to 1V4 per cent, the highest rate for that period quoted this year. Total 1.683 8.642 4.971 CAT1 LE Cattle receipt a usual on a Friday were moderate, only about 1.000 head being reported In, but this bring th total for the five day up to 24,870 head, a gain of almost 6,000 head over the same day last week, but a falling off of 2,600 head as compared with a year ago. The supply of beef steers In the yard wa extremely small and there was very little Inducement for buyers to get out lit the yards and try to do business. As usual on a Friday the trade was slow and while the best steers were possibly steady the feeling generally was very dull and weak. It Is safe to quote beef steers as around 15(i25c higher than a week ago, both corn feds and grassera. There wa a little sprinkling of cow stuff this morning, but receipts of that kind of cattle have been very largo this week and packers apparently had about all they needed on hand to supply the week' or ders. A a result they did not try very hard to buy. In fact, did not seem to care wheather they got any additional supplies or not unless they could buy something way lower. As a result the market was In very unsatisfactory condition, bids In many cases being fully 25c lower than yesterday. It I safe to say that the market on both cow and heifer I 156Y25c lower than last week' close, the medium to pretty good kinds of stock suffering the most decline. There were very few feeders on sale this morning and not many wanted. What few stockers there were were slow and weak. While the best feeder have sold fully steady this week the general run of stock cattle Is around 16f?25c lower. T 10 inctr buijply in the sheep barn con sisted largely of heavy wethers. Fresh re ceipts involved fourteen loads of wethers and three loads of lambs, all rantters. With yesterday's clearance In every branch of the trade complete, packers needed little urging to look over the run, and the result wa a market easily firm on sheep and all of a quarter higher on good lambs. Murh of the discredit attached to weight van ished and big wethers, the kind tnat have been poor actors on recent days, moved with a fair degree of freedom. One brand that moved at $3.86 yesterday sold at $3.50 today, but the sort was a little heavier. There were no ewes or yearlings of conse quence on sale. Improvement In lamb trade applied only to a prime three-load oftemig, a sale that left the market barren. They landed at $6.85, a price that Is plainly a bid for larger supplies of young stock. It Indi cates almost complete recovery of price losses this week, of course, but some al lowance must be made for the fact that declines were In force on several thounand head, while today's reaction developed on a three-load trade. There was nothing doing in feeder, as sorts were too small to afford anything like a normal supply. Up to last night the speculative and country demand proved ample, however, but prices showed little quotable change from day to day. About 15,000 head of thin stock changed hand this week, fully 80 per cent of receipt. Rig bulk of business has been confined to feeder sheep, as thin lamb sorts have been surprisingly light. Current prices for fat lambs range from 1M(&()c under a week ago, while fa, sheep show declines of lOITfiOc, heavy stuff suffer ing more than handy grades.
