GRIP OF BUSINESS HABIT
Why Tom Johnson Switched from
Bnalneaa to the Termed
of Poll t lea.
In his autobiography now being pub
lished In Hampton's Magazine, ths late
Tom L. Johnson fives the following account
of what induced him to give up business
at the height of his prosperity and while
he was still young:
During a time of great financial depres
sion and when I was interested with a lot
of people who were accustomed to dealing
In rather big transactions, I received a call
one night long after midnight from R. T.
Wilson, a man very high up in the busi
ness world. He came to my room at the
Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York and
asked ms to forgive him for waking me,
but aald he was In a terrible stats of de
pression and he must have m talk to him
to cheer him up. .
I asked him why he did not give up busi
ness since It worried him so excessively.
Ha was worth many millions, and with his
simple tastes ha could not spend bis In
come. "Yea, yes," be said. "I ought to stop
business. I know it and I hava tried It.
My family seam to get soma enjoyment out
of Ufa. and I ought to, but I canot stay
away from th office. I havs stayed away
for week at a time as a trial, and then 1
get so blus that I have to rush back. Then
after I havs been at ths grind awhile I am
overwhelmed with the awfulness of It all
as I was tonight, when I had to corns down
her to sea you."
"WelU" I said, "If you play th gam
you'v got to tak th thumps."
He answered that he saw no relief In any
course hs could now talcs; he was too old.
too firmly settled In habits of thought and
action to change.
That midnight visit set m to thinking
seriously about getting out of business. I
asked myself whether It was possible, if
I continued In it. that I should come to be
possessed with the Insanity of It as this
unhappy old man was. Would It become a
habit with me Ilk a drug?
I was young and strong, but. much as. I
enjoyed th game. I was not willing to take
the thumps. Having reached this decision.
I directed all my energy to getting out of
the various things I was engaged In. This
sounds easier than It was, and I never did
get out entirely, but from th time of that
old financier's visit I never lost sight of
tbs fact that I must give up th money
making gam.
I retired from several of mv interests at
about ths same tlm and prepared to de
vote myself to th advancement of the
artnclples advocated by Henry George. I
was seeking happiness and I chose th line
of least resistance. All my public doing)
are to be accounted for In this way."
Gratltade.
Charles F. Murphy,' th political leader,
said of gratitude at a democratic banquet
in New York:
"The gratitude that you meet with In
