retary Rathbone of the Short Ship racing
circuit, which Includes the cities of Red
Oak, Malvern, Shenandoah and Nebraska
City, this morning put the sprinkler at
work on the track In this city to keep It In
most excellent shape for the workouts of
the several fine horses which are now on
the grounds awaiting the date of the open
ing of the circuit which will be In this city
August 1 for a three dayB' meet. The tracks
of this circuit are recognized as among
the best In the country. A fine speed pro
eram Is anticipated and every day brings
! new entries to the already large list and
among them are some of the finest horses
in the middle west. The entries close this
week.
Some excellent side features will be in
cluded In the program this year, among
which are two base ball games eacn aay in
a tournament In which teams from Elliott,
Essex, Stanton and Red Oak win partici

Tralnor of Canada won by first stae In
the shooting for the king's prise with an
aggregate score of 101, at the meeting of
the National Rifle association today. He
takes the National Rifle association bronze
medal, the bronze badge and a cash prize
of $125. The first stage for the king's prize
provided for seven shots at 200. 600 and
000 yards, with a possible aggregate of 106.

LONDON. July 17. An entirely unex
pected contingency confronts the career of
the veto bill tonight. It is a possibility
that the house of lords. Instead of passing
the third reading of the bill with their
amendments on Thursday, thus sending It
back to the house of commons for consid
eration, may reject It entirely, even with
amendments. In that event Premier
Asquith is fully expected to announce that
ne had advised the king to create a large
number of peers

burn to the liberal lords. Lord Morley In
a circular letter said:

highest degree desirable that no supporter
of the bill should be absent from his place.
I earnestly trust, therefore, that your lord

FAIRBURY, Neb., July 18-(Specal.)-
The funeral services of the late Earl R.
Burns were held from the Christian church
at 2 p. m. Monday, Rev. Thomas A. Max
well officiating. Burns died at the State
hospital In Hastings, Saturday, and the
body was brought to Falrbury Sunday and
taken to an undertaking establishment, i
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Burns,
live near Thompson, In the southwest part
of this county. Deceased was 23 years of
age. In June,' while working In a field, he
wss 'overcome by heat, which resulted In
his losing his mind. He escaped one night
and disrobed and ran twelve miles and
was captured by Mr. Flowers at his home
near Hebron. He was taken to Hatftlngs,
but was shortly afterwards paroled. He
got violent again last week and was taken
to Hastings a second time.

HUMBOLDT, Neb., July 18. (Special.)
Mrs. Fritz Frledley died at her home east
of Humbodt from heart failure and Intes
tinal trouble. About ft week before her
death she was taken to a St. Joseph hospi
tal for an operation, but an Incision re
vealed that she -was beyond help. Mrs.
Frledley was born In Switzerland tn 1S58,
and came to America In U86.
She was married September 17, 1S88, to Mr.
Frledley. The husband and four children
survive her.

died yesterday after a brief Illness. She
was 34 years of age. and had been married
but a few weeks.

ham Jeffers of East McCook died at tho
home of his daughter, Mrs. Mapes, In East
McCook yesterday, aged 69 years. Deceased
has been a partial paralytic for some year.
His life was Insured In the Woodman order
for 32,000. He was affiliated with an
Illlnos lodge for over twenty years.

John F. Ogborn died yesterday at the
home of his Bister, Mrs. Llbble Lescher.
He was born In Madison county. Ohio, in
1845, and served In the civil war as a mem
ber of Company O, One Hundred and
Forty-fifth Infantry and In Battery O,
First regiment Illinois light artillery.

LONDON, July . Dr. Herman Adler,
chief rabbi of the United Hebrew congrega
tion of the British empire, died today. Ho
was born at Hanover, May 30, 1839, the son
of Chief Rabbi Nathan Marcus Adler. He
was ordained In 18(2 and became chief rabbi
In 18S1.

pistol fight last Sunday morning with
Patrolman Olllnger of Minneapolis, was
the man wanted In Des Moines under the
name of Tom Hatch. Hatch was wanted
In Des Moines for attempted robbery. In
Minneapolis he Is thought to have be
longed to a coterie of criminal! organized
to waylay and plunder.
