"The people of this country are adopting
the religions of the pagan countries cen
turies ago," said Miss Barge Monday
morning at the missionary conference at
the University of Omaha. "They thlrrk
they have new religions, but In truth they
re only the pagan religions of years ago
brought over here from the far east and
established under a new name."
Miss Barge's talk was on non-Christian
faiths In America. "Theosophy," she said,
"Is nothing; else than Buddhism. Mor
monism Is the old Mohammedanism of
years ago. Confucianism Is practiced here
under the name of ethical culture, and
Parseeism Is the same religion as that of
the sun worshippers of long ago."
Miss Barge dwelt chiefly on the Mormon
religion, saying the chief object of that
religious sect was to build up a great
Mormon kingdom. " She said the political
Influence of this sect Was very great. "At
the world's fair at Seattle recently s re
production ot the Mormon temple in Salt
Lake City was put up In the government
building at the expense of the United
States. The reason for this was the In
fluence ot the society In the government
at Washington."
Miss Barge's address was preceded by a
short talk on home missionary work by

A gathering of members of the Ponca
Improvement club Saturday night at Ponca
School house proved to be an Indignation
meeting against the numerous robberies
that have occurred In the Ponca bailiwick
of late. They resolved that protection was
necessary to relieve the situation and to
that end a committee was appointed to
wait on Sheriff Bralley and Induce him to
deputize Will Bena as protection. Bena
will serve without pay. Thefts In Ponca
have been numerous as well as bold. Rob
bers have taken about everything they
could lay their hands on, from fruit to
live stock.
The sheriff will ask the county commis
sioners to otter $26 for the arrest of the
thieves

wheat. The most favorable reports pre
viously made on winter; W.ha$ are being
borne out by reports from fields where
threshing is actually being done. Potatoes
will make a good crop on McCook division,
where Irrigation w atcr is used. ,
Oats will yield but a very light, crop
over most of the state and in some places
are being cut for hay. excepting ' In . the
Irrigated land, where oats are In good con
dition and will yield s big' crop. On the
Sterling division oats tre In fair condi
tio and will yield from twenty-five to
forty bushels per acre.
It Is the general opinion that cor'ri will
yield an average crop over the entire
state. Very little more rain will be needed
to assure a good crop on corn and In many
places early corn Is already' beginning to
tassel. Following are the towns where the

The new law against minors smoking will
be tested Immediately by the juvenile au
thorities. Test cases will be prepared and
boys between sixteen and eighteen will be
arraigned before the police Judge.' The
new Quackenbush law provided that If a
boy will turn Informer and give the name
of the dealer from whom he bought' the
tobacco he may receive a lighter punish
ment Boys younger than It Will be tried
In Juvenile court. -' '

The creditors of Charles Robertson, who
formerly operated the Robertson cafe, will
realise very little on the cafd stock which
was sold at public auction In the offices ol
Charles G. McDonald for $1,600. the stock
was appraised at about $6,000 and Mr. Rob
ertson's debts amounted to almost $30,000.
William Bauermelster, who: formerly
operated the United States restaurant on
Dodge street, will In all probability bt
acknowledged the Successful bidder. The
stock was first auctioned off by parcel and
brought about $1,320. It was then auctioned
off In bulk and brought $1,650. The report
was made to the referee,-Charles G.. Mo
Donald, and he will verify the sale. Mr.
Bauermlester said after the sale that If he
is the successful bidder and gets the slock
he will open the cafe at Its present location
at once. "'

trouble at 2:30 o'clock Monday, ..morning.
He was a son of Gilbert Rustln, who died

was last employed at the county hospital.
For nine years previous to that, time he
was engaged as mining engineer ' In Colo
rado. Funeral services will be-conducted
