CHICAGO, July 18.-AVheat prices today

The end of the day left corn c to yic

higher and provisions strung out from a
hade less cost to a rise of 17V4c.
Primary arrivals of wheat rreen rrom tna
fields today made an astonishing total,
1,142,000 bu. Last year the aggregate at
the corresponding time was less than half
that amount and two years ago was only
250.000 bu. Accordingly, the market fluctu
ated downward from the atart. There were
, ralltea because of strength displayed tem
porarily in corn on account of black ruat
talk from the northwest. September ranged
from 8914c to Wc, with the close firm,
but KSlYtu net lower at kW(9c.
The corn market was materially affected
by the cool, wet weather west of the
Mississippi. September varied between
and ?So, closing weak, Sia"c net
lower at 6c. Cash grades were in fair
demand. No. 2 yellow finished at 66(&c.

NEW TORK. July 13. -Trading In stocks
fell off to almost the loweot point of the
year today. Transartlons for the entire
sesnlon were only 116,i0 share as com
pared with the yexr's low point of 10U.K
on April 12. when the market was awaiting
the supreme court doclslon In antl-truMt
cases. The movement of stocks was cor
respondingly narrow. The tone was fairly
firm, however, and the movement on the
whole was on the constructive side, even
though some of the small advances were In
Issues whose Influence on the market has
always been of little weight.
Among the railroad stocks. Northwestern
was strongest with a gain of a point. Inter-borough-Metropolitan
preferred led the
transactions with an advance of two points,
while among Industrials American Beet
Sugar showed nearly as much gain at one
time, and Virginia-Carolina Chemical rose
a point. The advance In lnterborough-Met-ropolltan
preferred represented a continu
ance of the recent speculative buying on
the Improved prospects that the eomitny
will receive a share of the subway awards.
Trading In bonds, while relatively more
active than stocks, was dull.
borne exciting transactions In Porcupine
mining stocks on the curb were occasioned
try news of the dlrastrous forest fires which
damaged mining property In that district.
After an abrupt decline In almost all of the
leading Porcupine Issues, the stock became
quiet on a higher level.
The bond market was steady. Total
sales, par value, $2,083,000. United States
bonds were unchanged on call.
Number of eaies and leading quotations
on stocks were as follows:

CATTLE Receipts of cattle were com
paratively moderate for a Thursday and
the general character it the offerings was
about the same ax yesterday, conditions
also showed little change and for the most
part fat cattle sold In substantially the
same notches as on yesterday and not a
great deal different from the close of last
week. All classes of buyers were anxious
for the ripe well fatted cattle and those
found a ready sale at firm figures, while
there was the usual inauiarence in
to the grassy and shonted grades and In
some-jcases prices looked a little lower.
For the most part however, it was a fairly
active and quotably steady trade and a
good early clearance waa made.. '
More or less stresgm was uocii;ru ,u
and rholr bacon welsh ts reached $6.80, 74c
above yetserday's high price.

SHEEP Orsss sections furnished a sup
ply of sheep and lambs that appeared to
be somewhat In excess of the demand, this
condition being especially pronounced In
the lamb branch of the trade. About twenty-two
loads of rangers arrived In addition
to four or five loads of mixed corn belt
offerings. Idaho sent in practically all of
the grass stock, fully fifteen loads of
spring lambs showing up from that state.
Bulk carried very good killing flesh and
feeder sorts were relatively small.
With more than enough stock to fill all
orders, buyers for packers were Inclined to
take a. bearish view of the situation
and business had a duii appearance from
the start. Trend to valuea was generally
lower, lambs getting the poorest treatment,
but here and there a sale waa made that
looked steady or very nearly so. Prices
weak to a little lower bought most sheep
sold early, while spring lambs had to sell
all the way from a dime to a quarter off.
Idaho lambs landed at $6.76. Indicating a
quotable limit ft $7.00 and Idaho yearlings
moved at $4.70. Idaho wethers brought $4.20,
only lO-jjfl&o below probable price for some
thing strictly prime In this line. Spring
lambs from the corn belt sold as high as
$6.90. but the trade was on the psckage
order and amount of business was too small
to draw comparisons.
The feeder market Is still In a dormant
condition, as supply continues meager with
the demand slack. Most of the orders filed
with commission men thus far for future
execution at prices decidedly lower than
those In force a year ago.

Alarm Routs Deaf
Thief Breaking In
Mrs. Harrison's Homo
How a makeshift burglar alarm routed
a "deaf' burglar breaking Into the house)
of Mrs. Russell B. Harrison In Washington
Is told In newspaper accounts received by
Mra Harrison's mother. Mrs. Alvin Faun
ders of this city. The Incident occurred s
week sgo and la thus described:
"The Incessant ringing of a big gong,
used as a burglar alarm, awakened resi
dents In the vicinity of Twentieth and Q
streets northwest early yestorday morning,
and caused the arrest of lnysses Q. Jordan,
a negro, 24 years old, on a charge of break
Ing Into- the home of Mrs. Russell Ren
Jamln Harrison, daughter-in-law of the late
President Harrison, at 2233 Q street north
west. Mrs. Harrison Is out of the city for
the tiummer, and the police have tele
graphed her to learn if Jordan wss em
ployed by her to cut the grass during her
absence, as he claims,
, "When the burglar alarm started ringing,
a servant near Mrs. Harrison's home In
vestigated, and when he reached a rear
door, yw Jordan running down an alley.
Policeman Mundle of tho Third precinct ar
rested Jordan.
"A crowd was attracted to Mrs. Har
rison's home by the first alarm of the
gong, which la attached to a third story
window'. It was found that a door In tho
rear of the house had been forced and left
open. Jordan says he did not hear tho
bell ring, as he Is deaf. Nothing was found
missing from the house.
"The alarm waa Installed by the Western
Union Telegraph company. They planned
to connect with their central station, but
could not obtain permission to run the wire
across Q street over the tops of houses.
As there are no underground wires con
venient, the compromise of attaching the
bell to the .front of the house, completing
the system, was reached,"

HOOS Hog trade was a muddled affair
due to the wide difference of opinion
among buyers -regarding proper levels for
nrlree. The early market waa promising.
but Its Derlod of promise wa short-lived.
Probably twenty loads of hogs sold shortly
after the opening at figures btiioo nigner.
Uemand at thene advancea proved more or
less patricularly, however, and selections
Involved only naoon ana gooa ouicner
iradea suitable for shipping.
After these orders were out ot the way
tha market came to a dead etandatlll. all
buyers remaining undr cover until well
aleog toward 10:30 o'clock. Finally bids
wars placed on bulk that averaged a little
lower than yesterday's prices, the trade set
tling to a weak to nickel lower nasia.
Most of tha receipts changed hands at
slightly lower figures, but movement lacked
activity and It was almost midday before
Clearance was complete.
Reason for a mean market could not be
credited to supply, as the entire run con
sisted only of 136 loads. Variety and quality
were much tha same as usual and the moat
logical cause of dull, weak trade seemed
to be steadily increasing stocks provi
sions, especially lard. Shippers purchased
about T per cent In all and favored, smooth
animal weighing around 3M pounds.
