CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
reataree ef the Trading and Cloatac

CHICAGO, July 1 A eudden collapse
In prices today came aa an Immediate re
sult of the end of the heat and drouth,
corn led the dowofall, cloalng with a net
loaa of 24 to o. Oata finished 1"4 to 2tc
down, while wheat Kii lVstylVaC to lc
lower. Provision declined a nickel to a
quarter of a dollar.
Corn cloaed at almost the bottom fig
urea of the mi son. At one time there was
quite a pronounced recovery, due io rest
ing orders of a scattered sort ind the
aoalping by the larger local traders. The
market, however, lacxea permanent sup
port. Moreover at the outset especially
there waa a general 'rush to the selling
side. In addition to Widespread rein and
to tha break In the hot wave a statement
Issued by a well known authority declared
that contrary to popular Impression tha
cot n crop was, as a whole, in excellent
Condition and needed only moisture. Sep
tember ranged from'M4 to 8&c, closing
fairly steady at Mo, net lor of 3c.
Oata broke under- the weight of heavy
selling on the part of yesterday's buyers.
w.th last sale. I'n.Qo off at 4tfHi64o.
Wheat missed .toe sustaining influence
that had been previously given by corn
tu oats. Less favorable crop reports from
North Dakota did not mako an acceptable
substitute. High and low points touched
by beptember were M,(a'.U- and 0o. The
ciose was steady, but l'sl'to down at
0.
Provisions were under pressure because
of the weakness of corn and hogs. The
outcome wsa a decline all around: pork,
10 to 26c; lard, to. 12!o. and ribs 12
to 15a

CATTLE Ther was a reasonable run of
cattl her thla morning and the peculiar
feature ot th reoelpts was th wide dif
ference in tnae quality of th offerings.
Receipts lnoluad a fair percentage of
strictly good to choice dry tot oattla and
an increasing percent of short-fed and
"dry weather" stsers. Tha market was
much tb same aa on yesterday aa far as
th dalrabl grade were concerned and
slow to tVtflOo lower on th unattractive
and grassy kinds. Advices from other sell
ing polnta were generally bearish, and
wbll th trad waa In very satisfactory
ahao aa far aa the best cattle were con
cerned, the outlook for th medium to com
mon kinds waa decidedly unfaTorabla.
Cholc beeves sold aa high aa at-60, the
high price of the year to date. "
Tha market for cowa and heifer waa In
much the aama condition aa th fat oattla
rade. the beat grades selling Ireeiy at
fully ateady figure and price being mor
or leas shaded on the ordinary run of
butcher and oanner atock.
Weather condition adseared to be th
governing factor in tb Blocker and feeder
trad and prleea were decidedly uneven.
n aome Instances desirable stock steers
and heifers sold at fully steady prices, but
In tha majority of cases it took shaded
prloea to move th liberal offering. Coun
try demand la very uncertain at preaent
and ia likely to be so until tha country la
blessed with good general rains. ,

SHEEP Trade In sheep and lamb was
on th package order, only five or six loads
showing up In all. The entire supply con
sisted of small bunrhea of aprlng lambs,
fed sheep and fed lambs from th corn
belt, leaving th. market for rang stock
barren.
With receipts of such meager volume th
trade, naturally active, proved rather un
certain, but trend to values was. If any
thing, stronger. In various Instances sales
were msde that looked decidedly higher,
bulk ranging from firm to about 16o up.
Spring iambs msde up a very respectable
portion of the run and good to choice
grades moved within a spread of 27.8S4J7.66.
A 87.. top waa reported too late for pub
lication yesterday and it Is safe to quote
something str.ctly prime at least that high
today. 8 horn lambs, corn-fed, landed at
K40, Indicating a limit of 88.60 or possibly
26.00. for an extra choice article.
Nobody knew very much about tha con
dition of sheep trade, aa salesmen ped
dled what little stuff they had at uneven
figures. An empty feeder msrket failed to
giv any Idea of th tone to demand.
