With receipts lighter and with the de

a few head at (6.25.
The best cows and heifers were strong
at the opening with the general market

HOGS Hogs opened ' 10c higher and
closed 15c higher, that is they sold IO&I60
higher tnan yesterday a general marKet
Bome were quoting it aa 16o higher than
yesterday morning aivl 10c higher than the
high point at yesterday's close. Whichever
way it may oe aiatea me laci remains
that the market aa viewed from a seller s
stanpoint was in splendid, condition. Pack
ers evidently wanted everything in eight
and each buyer seemed anxious to pick
up as many loada as possible by o clock
in the morning. A considerable proportion
of the hogs sold at $t.Oi4jj.l6. with a top
at $6.30. loday a advance carnea tne mar
ket to the highest point touched alnce
April 6, when the average price for all the
hogs waa 36.2L
While the present advance of prlcea has
coma in the nature of a surprise to a good
many, it is apparently only the natural
outgrowth of a sharp falling off in ro
celpta. Thus for the three days thia week
the total arrivals at the yards here foot
up only 29.896 head, aa agalnat 40,636 head
for the aame days laat week. Thia la the
smallest run alnce the third week In May
and some are saying that It la a proof that
the supply of hogs in the country is being
rapidly depleted and that average re
ceipts from now on are likely to be consid
erably smaller than laat month. Still the
month of Juna to date runs considerably
ahead of the eame time laat month.

SHEEP What was said regarding the
sheep market yesterday would apply
equally well today. The fact Is the market
now, the same as every year at this time.
Is between corn and grasa and is so poorly
supplied with stock that on most days
there Is hardly enough on sale to really
make a market. This morning there were
ten or a dosen cars reported In, but most
of them were single decks and as was
the case yesterday, made up largely of
ewes and lambs and trah of various kinds.
Included In the receipts, however, were
three double decks of Oregon wethers, the
first of the season to arrive at this point.
As was the case yesterday morning, the
buyers all seemed to want a few good
killers, but good killers were in very mod
erate supply, as noted above. The result
was that the trade was slow and uninter
esting and still anything desirable changed
hands quite readily, with prices In about
the same notches as yesterday. A few
pretty decent spring lambs sold up to 87.00,
with common light stuff at 36.00. A pretty
decent kind of clipped lambs brought $6.05,
with others ranging on down to 36.75. There
were a few head of ewea good enough to
bring $4.00. A few Oregon yearlings held
over from yesterday brought 34.30, with
ewea at 33.40.
