Alarming re ports of a black outlook for crops In South I)akota and parts of neighboring states threw the wheat pit today Into much ex citement. In consequence the market made an almost vertical rise of le to 3Ho net, closing strong. Coat-He grains too, were on the Jump. Corn finished Qto to l4c up and oats at c to m14c advance. The provision lint was unaltered or with gains not exceeding a nickel. Serious as wheat conditions were re ported to be In both North and South Da kota, portions of Minnesota and north western Iowa were alleged to be In no better position. With tbs mercury around 100 la North Dakota, sentiment underwent a decided change. Bearish cables which had caused weakness early dlaappeared al together aa a market influence and for that matter so did everything else except the news from the northwest and there was active business up to the laat tap of the gong. July ranged from S6Vc to 8fcc and cloaed 2Vo net higher at the beat figures of tha day. Corn rose on account of statements that the whole belt ' Is deficient In moisture. September fluctuated between 56Ho and 67u, closing lSc up at 66T57c. 'Cash grades were firm. No. 2 yellow finished at e44i'66K:.. Oats mounted to the highest point thus tar this season. The price limits reached by the September option turned out to be 40C and asc, with last sales S net higher at tawu--- Provisions held firm because of good si led exports. High Bids on Bonds Do Not Surprise Yates Names of Omaha Bidders Not Known Banks Not Directly Interested in the Issue. Th range of bids shown when the of fering for Panama canal S per cent bonds were opened by treasury officials Satur day waa not a aurprlsa to Henry W. Tatea, president of the Nebraska National bank, who haa been more Intereated, perhaps, than any other banker In Omaha In the suocess of the issue. I expected." said Mr. Tatea. "that the bids would run between 102 and 103 or 104 and my advice to prospective bidders at all times waa that strong competition would run the figures up." - There la no way of ascertaining how many Omahana entered bids on tha Issue. Many of the banks distributed the appli cation blanks promiscuously, and no count waa kept in other establishments ofth number of applications that were taken out. Not all of the Omaha banks were bidders. Many of them took cognizance of the attitude of the treaaury officials Indicating that preference would be given to the email blddera. Then, also, the suc cess of the Issue being assured, the banks were not particularly desirous of bidding, inasmuch aa the bonds are not available for security on currency issue.
