CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Vest a res at the Treats Mi Clealaar
Prices oa Board af Trade.
CHICAGO. May . Peril from deficient
moisture and from the stalling temperature
threatening the wheat crop southwest kept
peculators today In a bullish mood. Clos
ing prices were firm at last night's level
to iio above. The end of the day left corn
s?HiC up and oats at an advance of aS'tc
to N4THc. In pro visions the outcome varied
from liVto gain to X4o decline.
Despite the fact that prices charged (or
wheat were not of much width, trad was
of an active sort, with the feeling quite
nervous. Shorts and new Investors took tha
lead In tha buying. Longs sold to realise
profits. Aslda from the drouth and hot
wave saute. want, thai market received a
bullish Impulse through French official re
ports of crop shortage. Showers In the
American spring- wheat belt, however, acted
as an offset In favor of the bears. Another
drag; was tha lack of any improvement in
tha milling demand. Nevertheless a rally
was unmistakably in progress at the close.
July ranged from &tc to SVeo, and fin
ished at Sffte with a net gain of a ahade.
Coveting by shorts In tha corn crowd
was oa a huge scale. A great deal of in
fluential selling developed on the advance.
July fluctuated between KSc and ba,
closing firm He up at MVuMij. Cash
grades were stronger. No. 3 yellow finished
at 5-KVo. , , .
Tha bulge In oat was attended by a
larger trade than has been witnessed for
some time. High and low points for July
were io and 36c, with last sales 36c, a
rise of Ho compared with last night.
Provisions advanced with grain and be
cause of a light run of hogs, but gradu
ally sagged under liquidation. When the
pit was cleared, pork retained 7Hc to 13c
of the upward movement, but other prod
ucta was back to within a amall fraction
either way from tha figures of twenty
four hours before.

NEW YORK. May 5S.-The underlying

of the unusually severe pressure that was

when the pressure was relaxed. Since the

has teen conducted on a large scale. Dear

supply of stocks was almost the smallest
of the year.
The volume of trade diminished consid

that another output of Hsrrlman Issues

which assert thst arrangements for list

also was reported that application has
been made to list American Telephone and

The April reports of the Harriman roads
showed the retrenchment policy which was

CATTLE Receipts of cattle were very
small even for a Friday, only twenty cars
being reported In. which was not enough
to make very much of a market. Still
what few cattle there were sold In good
season and to good advantage. Prices as a
rule were fully steady with yesterday and
In many cases quite a little stronger where
buyers happened to see something that
they especially wanted.
THIS leaves tri6 market st tne present
time wlths the best well bred and ell fat
tened cattle steady with last week. On
the other hand, unfnllsh-d and plain cattle
even If they are light weights, are Udl5c
lowerjirhan last week. Heavy cattle have
beeen more or less neglected all the week
and they are generally 10X1 15c lower.
Choice well fattened heifers snd light
cows on the heifer order have remained
about steady all tbe weeet. but heavy cows,
even If fat. have been slow sale, and they
are 16sjfl5c lower than last week's close.
Vsry fsw feeders have been comlngand
they have sold at strong prices, la fact
In many cases 154f2So higher than the same
cattle brought last week, it win so un
derstood, however, that the demand is still
limited . and the strength of the market
Is due entirely to the fact that receipts
have been so- light.

HOGS Hog trade waxed warm on a lim
' tted supply and- all weights mads good ad-
101s ! vancea. It was a lo15c higher market
.IMS ' while It lasted, everything passing over the
. trs sraiea within a short time after the open
let ing. About eighty-four cars of stock were
leas i yarded and none of the regular buyers
11 1 were timid with their ordexa
lot I j,-0 material changes occurred in ths po-
" sltton of spreads between various weights
snd bulk held within a dime range at tha
advances. Tha big end of the run moved
at 85 754 5.83 and choice bacon bogs sold
up as high as to 96.
Speculative and shipping outlets had fair
volume, as compared with total business,
and right around a doxen loads of animals
sold to buyers en outside account. Quality
rather than weight featured general pref
erence from start to finish, a phase of the
market that has been evident for maay
week s.
Until today prlree have been slightly
lower than those at last week's cloee, but
today's Improvement place the trade about
a dims higher than Saturday's market.
This advance is shown In tops as' well as
bulk.
