The market on beef steers opened slow and was a good deal of a drag throughout the day. As a rule buyers were bidding lower prices, but they seemed to want the light and medium weight cattle of good quality, and sellers who had anything Of that description generally figured that they secured the same prices as yesterday, as high as $6 was paid for light good light weights. Heavy cattle on the other hand v ere slow and the tendency lower, tha same as they have been every day this week. Tha feeling on cows and heifers -was weak, but sellers were generally able to Kqueese out about steady prices on tha better grades. - Heavy cows on the other hand were alow and weak the same aa they have been for some days back. -There was no material change in the feeder or stock cattle situation. It wu a dull market caused by conservative demand that started to crop out In places yester day, and the early session did not produce any business of consequence. Among sellers It was freely admitted that clearance looked doubtful, especially In that branch of the market where wooled Mexicans weie available. Packers kept at a safe distance rrom offerings with fleece and entered pens of shorn lambs without much show of Interest , Dullness was general rather than local and could not be traced to fresh supply. Only sixteen doubles of stock arrived, the bulk consisting of lamhs. One single ship ment of wooled Mexicans amounted to nine aouutes, Dut this consignment was prac tically alone in the wooled division. When trading finally started prices for lambs dropped to levels 104130c lower, with prospects of closing right around a quarter off. Good, shorn grades got best action at cheaper coat, best seventy-seven-pound animals selling as high as 36.85. Extra good Mexicans in fleece ranged around 37.50 i.wj. mere were no spring lambs worth mentioning on sale Old sheep ruled steady and sold with a very fair degree of freedom, shorn ewes topping at I4.76i-4.S5 and shorn wethers bringing as much as 85.25- These prices in dicate a live mutton trade 60075c higher than last Friday's values and lambs have also scored splendid advances. NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Price Reductions by Independent Steel Companies Chief Influence. UNITED STATES STEEL TARGET American Beet lagar Shows Dlatlnct Strength, Toarhlac Illahrst Point la Mlatory . Atchison Road's Gipense4 Pall. NEW TORK. May 25.-Events which fol lowed the action of the Republic Iron and Steel company yesterday In reducing prices were the predominating Influences todav in the securities market. Traders were con fused as to the exact meaning of the move of the Republic company, which was soon followed by similar action on the part of other Independent concerns, and a anhai. diary of the United States Steel corpora- nun, imierinue reports ot probable further price cutting by steel and Iron producers and by manufacturers generally added to the confusion. United states Stoel shares were the tar get for most speculative marksmen. The stock sold In large htocks to 774 during the first hour In whl"ti time transactions In the stock aggregated more than 80.000 shares, or about 40 per cent of the total transactions tor the period. After a decline of a point the stock rallied and showed a degree of strength which was surprising to traders. Republic Iron and Steel Issues held at slightly below yesterday's figures and Sloss-Sheffleld fell a point. Elsewhere the list showed strength. Union Pacific and Reading declined only fractionally. American Beet Sugar, which touched trie) highest point In Its history, showed dis tinct firmness. , The sale by the Oregon-Washington Rail road and Navigation company, a subsi diary of Union Pacific, of 325,000,000 4 per cent bonds to an International syndicate was accepted as further Indication that bankers ha"e no serious misgivings as to the Immediate future. The April report of the Atchison road ex cited much attention on accoiTnt of the large decrease In operating exoenses, amounting to I710.0nn. Although grcrv earn ings fell off 3478,000 the reduction In ex penses resulted In a gain of 3231.000. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value. 32.518.000.
