of cattle today and absolutely none on tale
to make a market, f or the week receipts

Considering the large receipts the mar

Good and well fattened heifers and light
cows on the heifer order have been active
tellers all the week and have commanded
steady to strong prices every day. On the
other hand, plain and .heavy cows have
been more or less neglected and at the
close of the week they are luidc lower
as compared with last week, it will be
noted from this that the consuming demand
calls for lUnt beet, the heavy kinds being
niore or less negleeteu. Veal calves have
ahonn some strength this week and are
2do higher than one week ago. Bulls and
stags nave sold at about steady prices, in
lact good bulls have been strong.
A somewhat better demand has prevailed
this week for good stock cattle and teeu
ers and the better grades could safely be
quoted as a time stronger tnan last week s
cloce. Still It must be understood that the
demand has not been very large, at least
not so large but what the very moderate
receipts coming have been sufficient to
supply It

hog yards this morning; a good-slued Satur

day runs at Chicago and elsewhere. Buers

the trade yielded more or less In both
divisions. Quite a little business was done
early at figures a nickel lower than yes
terday's scale of values, but the market

Demand from no Quarter had verv much
activity and It required the greater part
of the morning to make a clearance of a
143-car ottering. laual assortment of
weights and usual spreads did not admit
of any radical changes in the general mar
ket and, excepting slumpy trend, the. trade
presented much the same appearance of
business on previous days this week.
Speculative orders were frequent and fully
10 per cent of receipts moved on orders
other than local packing. Butcher grade
ranged around $5.70 and heavies dropped
to 85.66 and less. Best bacon animals on
sale brought $5.65, a top that shows the
dime decline.
Decline in the market this week measures
about a quarter and Involves i all weights
and all finish. Demand has been ample on
most days, but rather backward, due to
some little Increase in volume of supply.
Cheaper cost Is ascribed to conditions gen
eral, however, and Is not usually regarded
as a siKnal of continded depression.
SHKi,r-rro sheep or lamhs were received
today and. as yesterday s clearance was
complete, botn branches of the Hade were
barren and remained nominal.
Vigorous demand for all kinds this week
has served to lift the general market clear
of the rut In which It has been moving this
peason. Smaller supplies prompted sellers
to peg prices up a few notches and. In view
of the seasonable condition, buyers al. '
lowed advances readllv.. The uulift in j
shorn lambs has been the longest, but the
least remarkable for the reason that'
spreads between offerings with and without j
fleece were due for considerable adjust
ment. I
Present prices for shorn lambs show net
advances of ou&Tbc over quotations a week
ago. while Improvement In wooled lambs
Is measured by a 5oc margin. It follows,
of course, that sales reached the highest
levels of the ear. Wooled Mexican lambs
sold largely around $6. 65ii6.SJ; one string
topping at $7.00 yesterday. Shorn lambs
jumped from a $5.0Ora5.50 bums to a $5.UOu'25
apread, these figures calling1 for good to
choice quality either at last week's
close or at present. Bulk of the receipts ar
rived shorn on all da)s and the few Mexi
cans available were practically alone In the
viooied branch of the trade.
Volume of business in old rheep has been
too small to afford anything like an accur
ate Idea of values. To all intents and pur
poses, matured muttons are now selling
UViiJoc above quotations a week ago, shorn
ewrs of good quality ranging around $1.25.
Wethers and yearlings have been notably
scarce.
