the employ of the Northwestern at Serlb
ner, died at the hospital this noon from
the effects of a fall off the tender of an
engine at Scrlbner this morning.
Peterson was standing on the tender, hav
ing Just pushed up the waterspout after
filling the tank. Ths spout did not go
up right and he reached to push It In

even the antl-Jewih newspapers admit
that the repnrts on which the agitation Is
based for the most part are not worthy of
credence.
In an Interview today M. Pllnsberg. a
leading Jewish lawyer, exhaustively re
viewed the history of th ritualistic mur
der as contained In the records of the
courts of Rui-sla and abroad. He said that
hardly a year passes without a revival
of the old myth about the Easter time In
connection with the temporary disappear
ance of a boy or girl, or In connection
with untrared murder. The Ignorant be
come excited and their excitement lasts
until the case Is cleared up.
In the majority of the cases It was
shown that no murder had been com
mitted and In the remainder the murder
was traced to the culpable agents and it
was proved that Jews had no connection
with them. Only two cases of alleged
ritual murder In the last forty years, said
Sllosberg. warranted Investigation by the
courts, and in both Instances trie verdict
was acquittal for the nrnerents of the
Jewish faith who had been arrested.
In nther canes a judicial Inquiry was be
gun under the supposition of ritualistic
murder, but In the early stages the theory
was discarded on ascertainment of the

It was suspected, when th body was
found In a cave near a Jewish qunrter. that
the Jewish sect. Hassides, which Is alleged
to forbid the burial of ritualistic victims,
may have had some knowledge of the case.
With respect to the Hassides. M. Pllos
berg said that the Jews of Russia are di
vided Into two classes, th Hassides, mean
ing pious, and the Mesnakdlm, meaning
opponents. The two exist aide by side.
Adherence to either sect depends upon the
temperamentof Individual or communi
ties. The Hassides are mystically Inclined and
acknowledge spiritual leaders called Zadyk.
The Mesnakdlm formalists are strictly dis
ciplined. They deny the Intermediary
spiritual functions of the rabbi.

Jewish committee, when asked by the
Associated Tress today for Its version re
specting the recent d snatches from Kiev,
authorized the following statement:
"The committee Is satisfied that only a
wide publicity ran avert a recurrence of
th horrible massacres Instigated by the
Russian government which took place be
tween 1903 and 1906, especially at Klsehi
netf, Odessa and Blalystok, when thou
sands of Jews were foully 'massacred and
millions of property destroyed.
"The monstrous and infamous stories re
cently sent out by the Russian government
from St. Petersburg, Kiev and Moscow and
published In American newspapers, respect
ing the alleged murder of a boy at Kiev,
are perfectly similar to the unfounded tales
circulated by the Russian government pre
vious to the Klschlneff. Odessa and Blaly
stok programs.
