Ten Years With the
Rourkes Shows Good
Average in Standing
Little Under Third Place for Last
Decade Two Pennants and
Twice in Second Place.
In the midst of the darkness and gloom
that rests like a nightmare upon the
Rourkes and their rooters perhaps they
might find a gleam of light by looking
backward and reflecting upon what has
been done by Omaha undeV the ownership
and management of Pa Bill, In the last
eleven years the team has averaged a
fraction under third place to be exact, the
fraction la 4-1L Most fair fans will allow
that Is good work. .
The team has won two pennants and. It
may reasonably be said, given away one,
for It is now quite generally admitted that
had the mutiny not broknn out at the
windup in 1808 Omaha would have taken
the flag, which it had -hands down. It
came within one game of winning It in
I'M. when Kansas City finished first with
a percentage of .COS, Omaha second with
a percentage of .800, Kawvllle profiting by
a Denver snowstorm that prevented It from
playing. Omaha has In that period fin
ished twice in second place, three time In
third place, once in fourth, twice in fifth
end once in eighth or last place, giving it
an average of a fraction under third.
Here is the way the record runs:
1900 Fourth 1908 Third
lsol FiftniHt7 First
1SW2 Second lucig Second
l.3 Elghtnii9 Third
1804 First mo Fifth
1W6 Third
It is to bs hoped the team will keep up
this eacelltnt record by finishing up in
the first division this season. The best
Judgment now seems to be that the team's
only weakness is In the box. And that is
apparently due chiefly to lack of condition,
lather than lack of ability. Undoubtedly
In Durbln, Rhodes, Keeley. and perhaps
others of the pitching department Rourke
has men who will be able to hold their
own when they get down to form. But a
new pitcher or two of the right caliber
would help.
The addition of Klehoff and Williams
thould add material strength te the team.
Klehoff played In U games for Des Moines
last year, coming to bat 604 time. H
made 111 runs, 29 sacrifices, which was
among the leaders; stole 63 bases, which
made him second in the league In base
running, and took 22S chances at third,
wllh 172 assists and, 82 error. He I rangey
and has a good afro and la always fight
ing for the game.
