felling was overdone In wheat on the
rains In the northweet. the market showed
an oversold condition today and covering
by shorts advanced prices from the open
ing. With normal weather following, the
chief Influence will be eliminated, as stocks
are rapidly accumulating and the cash
situation continues a heavy one.
Corn was stronger with the upturn In
wheat and showed a good tone. Stocks
ate small because of the recent heavy
shipments, which have offset the slight
Increase In receipts. The country move
ment Is not likely to be burdensome and
with cash demand good, prices could ad
vance. Wheat opened Heady and ruled higher,
due to shorts cornering. News was rather
conflicting, but on the whole the trade was
bearish and prices eased off at the close.
Corn ruled higher, receipts being higher
and the cash demand urgent, as supplies
are small. Salea on the floor average Wit

Political Condition.
NEW TORK. May 10.-K1tigirlhnes pre
vailed In th. stock market again todav.
The heavy undertone was described as
being due to the cumulative effect of the
decline In general business and the unsat
isfactory politics! outlook. Reduction of
railroad dividends was another unfavora
ble farter, yesterday's cut by the Boston
Maine being followed today by similar
action on the part of Vandalla. a subsi
diary of the Pennsylvania svetem. Penn
sylvania sold below 123 for the first time
Ince 19"!. New York, New Haven Hart
ford fell nearly $ points today, presumably
on account of the change In pavment of
Boston A Maine stock, of which It is a
large holder. The sentimental effect on
the market ae a whole was regarded as
f greater significance than the action of
the storks directly concerned.
Publication of the monthly statement of
the) unfilled orders of the Vnited States
Bteel corporation did not rouse the market
from Its Inertia, the price of I'nlted States
Bteel Itself scarcely moving when the an
nouncement was made that unfilled ton
nage at the end of April was 228.000 tnns
leas than at the close of the preceding
month. Trading In bonds was small and
somewhat Inactive today, but the volume
of business wss still much below that
reached a short time ago and It seemed
probable that a recession from the recent
high lea-el was to be exceeded.
Railroad bonds were easy. Total sales,
par value. $3.440mo. fnlted States govern
ment bonds, unchanged.

three days up to 14. Sou head, a gain of 2.O-0
head over last week and of about 1,000

ago. At the same time other market
polnta were reported as well supplied with
cattle and with prices everywhere showing
more or less weaaness. tne result was a
very slow and dull market at this point
ami tne iorenoon wss wen advanced, in
fact, it was well along toward mlddav be
fore enough business had been transacted
to really make a market.
The general feeling on beef steers was
weak to aa much as 10c lower, the decline
being equally distributed among the dif
ferent kinds, but with heavy cattle the
hardest and slowest to sell. Light cattle,
unless well fattened yearlings, were also
siow ana lower.
Good,' light cows and heifers were about
steady, out anything heavy or coarae wa
weak to loo lower.
There were only a few stockers and feed
ers In sight and there, waa not much

, HOGS Business in the hog yards had
plenty of voltme and plenty of life this
morning, but only ruled about steady
Over 11 000 head of animals arrived, weiglrls
ranging fiom light bacon to heavy lard of
ferings aa usual. All buyers were out In
the allays esriy and mul of the regulars
bought freely. By 10 30 o'clock packers'
pens war well filled and selling pens were
practically all vacated.
Orders from speculative traders had no
appreciable Influence upon the general
trade, as less than 10 per cent of receipts
moved en outside account, Snreads be-
taaen bacon, butcher and lard offerings
held at recent narrow margins and there
was little discrimination between various
weights. A growing scarcity nf rea ly
heavy hoars In the far of a broadening de
n and for lard Is partly responsible for tn
development of a four and f)v-piic mar
ket now existtrg
Weighty butchers and heavies ranged
around $S.?tge 75. th same as yesterday,
and good butchers sold at or near $6 SO.
best light asumal available brought aa
much as $6. So. a figure identical with yes
terday top.

In the sheep barn have been rare this sea
son. The session was one or llvelv trs
at higher prices, practically everything oA
sale moving at advances 01 iini.v. hi
erats supplies proved a local reason for
Improvement, but should not be credited
with all of bullish reaction, as general
conditions lately have helped considerably
to put the market In henlthler form. A
big decrees In the eastern supply of
calvef. causing veal to become a leee Im
portant competitor of mutton In retail cir
cles, has produced a natural revival of de
mand, aa well as the fact that froien
stocks are also beng eold out freely.
About twenty double of sheep and lambs
were Involved in the lO-ginc advance. Mexi
can wooled lamb were plentiful and old
sheep were relstlvely scarce. There were
no ewes of consequence on ssle and only a
limited offering of lambs minus fleece.
Mexican lambs sold as high aa $ S.Vn 40,
these prices calling for choice quality In
addition to good wool. Shorn lambs, west
erns, were good enough to command $5 20,
the highest price paid In over three weeks.
