May 8 Fear of drouth damage counterbalanced today with wheat specu lators an Idea that the government report would be decidedly bearish. As a matter of fact the document turned out less dis couragirg to the bulls than had been ex pected, but the remit was not known until after the board of trade hours. In conse quence the close was easy, VfSc off to c up. Corn finished a'Nc to c down, oats lower by Vy'1,0 to Vrftc, and hog products at 7V to 17Sc advance. In the face of quite general belief that the Washington report might be relied on to favor lower prices for wheat, the mar ket showed s elded snap on the buying side at times. Drouth talk In the north went furnished one rather pressing reason. Another was a liberal decrease In the United States visible supply total. Dur ing the first and last halt hour of the session dealers gave attention principally to the proposed signs of a high percentage in the government report on the condition of winter wheat and discussed with equal eagerness the outlook for a Tattering statement as to abandoned acreage. The May option went wholly Into the back' ground. July ranged from 88c to S84c and closed at 88Hc, a net loss of HWc Heavy selling by two leading operators who have large packing house Interests weighed down the price of corn. July fluc tuated between 51ii61o and 52Sc. cloatng weak at the first mentioned level So under the latest figures of Saturday. Cash grades were easy. No. 2 yellow finished at fjd4$4C Oats weakened with corn. High and low points for July were 3aH'582c and 32So, with latest sales W&Sc net lower at S2ViC. Provisions rose slightly on account ot a small run of hogs. After the pit was cleared pork had gained 15c to 17V:, lard, 7ViC to 10c, and ribs, 7H3T2Vie to 16c. Msy . The monthly statement of the Copper producers and the government crop report received more attention In the financial community to day than did the stock market, where trading was so lifeless ss to be almost without significance. Expectations of a good crop report were general and acted as a staying Influence. Prices declined moderately and the close showed many small net losses among the active Issues. The copper producers' statement wag not as favorable as had been expected, but publication of the report had little effect on stocks. Amalgamated Copper yielding only a fraction. In the steel trade also Indications of Immediate Improvements are few. The real market leaders with few ex ceptiens were rather heavy, although this seemed to be due more to neglect than to pressure. Atchison was strong toward the close on the report from Paris that negotiations for listing lOO.ono shares ot the stock on the Bourse had been virtu ally completed. Bonds were stesdy; total sales, par value 32.828.000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Number of sales and leading quotations on stocks were aa follows: galea High. Lew. ClnM. This is the largest run of any Monday since four weeks ago, and larger than for the corre sponding day of last year. The market aa a whole did not show, any very great changes. The market on beef steers opened with buyers picking out the bent light cattle, for which they paid prices that were fully steady with last week and in some cases possibly a little stronger. On the other hand, some of the first bids on heavy cat tie were, if anything, lower than last week, and the trade on everything of that de. acrlptlon was rather slow. Still It finally settled into about a steady market on pretty much all kinds, but holders ot heavy cattle, especially If they happened to be real coarse, complained that It took a good deal of work to unload at satisfactory prices. Some of . the light and more desirable heifers commanded prices that were a lit--lie stronger than last week, but the gen. eral market on cow stuff was only about steady, there being comparatively little change In either direction. Stockers and feeders were also without any very noteworthy changes, prices as a rule remaining about steady In last week's notchea Quotations on cattle: Good to choice beef steers, S6.8Oig6.10; fair to good beef steers, 35.6OJ35.80; common to fair beef steers, 36.00 66.60; good to choice heifers. 36.00gi6.66; good to choice cows, 34.7E'rt5.26; fair to good cows and heifers, 34. 21.76; common to fair cows and heifers, 32.76i8-t.26; good to choice stockers and feeders, J6.2fV36.60; fair to good stockers and feeders, S5.00ft6.26; common to fair stockers and feeders, S4.2635.26; stock heifers, 34.26&6.00; veal calves, 3.0O.6O; bulls, stags.- etc., S3. 7666.00.
