In a confidential way. Indicated to me that
General Dlai has made known to them hi
irrevocable resolution to retire rrom

This resolution appears to m to be
highly patriotic, because In the present
moment It Is the only one which can sat
isfy public opinion, and I am convinced
that If General Dlas make public this
Intention It will permit us to pacify the
country In a very few days, a matter which
la difficult to obtain In other way.
"For thee reason and not doubting th
patriotism of General Dlax, I w1h you to
present to the envoy of the government
the following proposition:
"In order to assure the Immediate paci
fication of Mexico and to furnish to th

McCann, the Chicago police Inspector, was
late today granted a full and unconditional
pardon from confinement In the Jollet pen
itentiary by Governor Deneen.
It was at a late hour In the afternoon
when the report of McCann's pardon was
given out for publication. It had been a
matter of speculation ever since th par
don board met at Jollet. The board ofV'
pardons was In session conferring on th
matter for the greater part of the day.
The McCann case made history In the
annals of the police departments of the
great cltlea of thl country. McCann, who
had a reputation as being one of th most
conscientious and efficient officer In Chi
cago, waa stationed, because of his capa
