NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Better Sentiment Causes Further Ad
vance in Prices.
BUYING MOVEMENT IS BROAD

Ihrerfnl Keellna In Regard
to On look.
NEW YORK, May l.-For a few hours
today the advance In stock which pro
gressed briskly In the closing days of
last week was halted while the market
awaited word from Washington as to
whether decisions were to be snnounced
by the supreme court In the anti-trust
cases. When It became known that the
decisions were not to be handed down
today the buying movement Was resumed
and prices moved upward.
Trading grew more active toward the
end of the day and at the close a number of
advances were distributed through the list
of active Issues. Stocks were In Scsnt
sutly even at the higher levels. The
buying movement apparently rested on the
same broad basis of Improving sentiment
in regard to the general outlook which
waa noted last week. Trading continued to
be largely professional.
Metal stocks were well supported and
their advances reflected the more cheerful
sentiment In regard to tne outlook for
both the copper and steel markets. The
fortnightly report of European copper
stocks showed another decrease, bringing
UP the total shrinkage In April to nearly
9,500,000 pounds. The outlook for the steel
trade is made somewhat brighter bv the
disposition of the railroads to re-enter the
market.
Canadian Pacific continued Its record
breaking movement, rising 44 points. Un
usual activity and strength of Reading 2s
preferred, which gained 6 points, was at
tended by a revival of the report that the
issue would be retired..
Denver and Rio Grande issues moved
against the market, the preferred being
especially weak with a maximum crop of
3"s on a rumor that the semi-annual
dividend might be reduced or possibly
suspended.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value, 83,701.000. United States govern
ment 2s declined 4.

CATTLE Receipts of oattle at this point
were moderate this morning only 111 cara
being reported In, which was a alight tail
ing off as compared with last we and a
still larger falling off as compared with
two and three weeks ago and a year ago.
At the same time some other market points
were over burdened with cattle and the
general outlook for the trade In the east
was far from encouraging.
The demand was still largely for the
handy, light oattle, and desirable beef
steers answering to that description sold
quite readily this morning at steady
prices, on the other hand the heavy cat
tle were more or less neglected and were
extremely slow sellers with the tendency
lower.
There were very few cowt and heifers
In the yards and what few there were sold
very readily at prices generally a little
stronger than last week's close.
There waa not much change In the
stocker and feeder situation as compared
with last week's close. This means, how
ever, that prices are around 164j2oo lower
than they were a week ago today and any
thing like liberal receipts ot cattle of that
description would be very apt to bring
about a still lower range of prices.

HOGS Chicago territory forced a supply
of 62.000 hogs on that market this morning,
as compared with the Saturday estimate
of 43,000 head, and the market went to
pieces. In short, receipt were ot extra
large Monday volume and of usual Monday
distribution. Too much material piled up
at one point afforded packers an oppor
tunity at cheapening oost, which, even
though more or less localised, extended to
farthest trading centers.
Locally, receipts were limited, with do
mand resonably broad. In the light of Chi
cago conditions this ratio was completely
Ignored and prices dropped to levels about
16o lowsr. Bulk sold on this basis and sold
readily, despite ths fact that sellers worked
hard to obtain belter figures. Shippers and
speculators furnished an outlet for fully St
pt-r'T.eiu of a 67-car run.
Spreads showed a tendency to narrow and
lard offerings moved at discounts under
bacon animals that were relatively small.
Long strings ranged from 35.66 to $0.66 and
bent llKht weights sold up as high as $6.76.
