Bull leaders gave an appearance of strength to the wheat market today by timely purchasing when there was a sign of the approach of weak ness. Forecasts of ' a material decrease In world shipments proved to be some thing of a help against the bears. Closing figures were at a net advance 01 c to 'r.c. Corn finished WaVtO up, oats the tame as last night to a gain of kc and hog products Irregular strung out over range of 15c. divided just euually above and below the level ot twenty-four hours before. Shorts In wheat acted with' much cau tlon, covering quickly and causing a num ber of sharp but not extended swells. At the outset, the market received an upward Impetus from the fact that Argentina ship mens were about LOOO.OOO bushels less than a year ago. On the whole the trade seemed to have drifted Into a waiting posi tion, fearing to-get away from conserve tlve operations In the new crop months until something more definite waa known In regard to the climax ot the May deal The tone at the olose waa steady, with prices about the best of the day. July varied from 87o to Ki!ifVo and in the end waa 4wfi44a net hluher at 87'c. In corn the advance waa largely due o wet weather and to a prediction of more moisture for tomorrow. July fluctuated be tween 62'4o e-nd 62c, closing easy. (S'o up, at alo. Cash grades were steady. ISO. I yellow finished at WiKlo. The oats trade was chiefly In the dlrec tlon of changing from May to distant fu turea. High and low levels for July were 81o and aiMio. with last sales at ilc, net sain of Vc. Provisions responded to free buying on the part of packers and shorts. The day left pork 60 to 63TVo higher, lard un- ' changed to 2H6o up and ribs 2a lm- tirove.1 to Eii)7VkO decline. Still receipts were large enough, considering the slue of the demand. Today's run leaves the total for the week to date at 14,600 head, being the smallest since tiuee we ka aco and smaller than a year ago by 4.000 head. Packers seemed to have about as many fat cattle as they needed and were not very active buyers this morning. Still they were willing to take on a few more caulj if they could buy them well worth the money, and while the trade was slow and dull everything was disposed of In fair season. Prices, however, ranged anywhere from stead yto close to steady to as much as 10a lower In some oases. There were only a few cows and heifers in sight, and what few there were sold at about steady prices there being no quot able change, as compared with yesterday In either direction. The stocker and feeders supply consisted of a few odds and ends and the market on that kind of cattle waa also without any material change. Very nearly half of this estimate consisted of Mexican lambs still In the fleece. Weighty western lambs, wooled ewes and shorn yearlings and wethers made up the balance of the run. The market, as a whole, was a narrow affair, of course, and remained In a quo- tably steady condition. Mexican lambs sold up as high as 85.90 and wooled ewes of good quality moved at 84.00. Shorn wethers and yearlings, bought on contract, went to the scales at 83.80. Shorn lambs, Hiring lambs and various kinds of mutton ehtep were practically lacking. On mom cloys this week the market has been well filled with offerings, today's estimate giving a total that Is larger than last week s run and much larger than the run this week last year. Lambs, usually shorn, were the rule, but Mexicans are still coming regular in bunches of 1,000 to 1,600 daily. In point of prices the entire trade is un evenly lower than a week airo. Best lambs, wooled, are closing around 30c un der last Friday's quotations, while shorn lambs are little worse than 2ouuc lower. About 186 cars were yarded, but buyers assert that outlet channels are becoming clogged and that large runs cannot be handled as eefely as recently. Prices settled to weaker levels, bulk showing an average decline of about a nickel. Opening business claimed beat sales, var ious loads of butcher and bacon weights selling steady. Trade took on an easier tone after the tirst round, nowever. and gradually became worse until the close Final prices averaged fxfrlOc lower than yesterday's figures with demand almost lifeless late in the session. About twenty- five loads were still in first hands at 11 o'clock with moat of the regular buyers under cover. bhlpplng and speculative orders were hard, to find so that clearance of about 95 per cent of supply was left to packers. DUN'S REVIEW OF TRADE Promise of Improvement a Soon a Uncertainties Pass. ABUNDANCE OF MONEY EXHIBITED Interest in Iron and Steel Still Craters l.aritrly on the Recent Redaction In Price of Ore. NEW Y'ORK, April 28.-R. O. Pun A Co.' Weekly Review of Trade tomorrow will say: While domestic trade moves sluggishly, export trades continues to expand, and the Increase In the amount of manufactured hi tides sold abroad Is very gratifying. Commercial activity abroad is most notice able and is a promise of Improvement on this side of the Atlantic as soon as present unoonaintios, which serve to retard enter prise, pass. Another contrast Is to be seen in the es sentially sound fundamental conditions, such aa abundance of money and compara tive barrenness of stocks on the shelves, on the on hand, and the curtailment of production, the Inactivity in distribution nd the virtual stagnation in apscuiauou on the other. Interest in iron and steel centers largely on the recent reduction In the price of ore. The lowering of quotation 60 cents a ton was not expected, but the cnange nae no been followed by any larger Inquiry for ig Iren ami bu;1ng is delayed, awaiting further developments. Cotton goods have not responded roucn to the sharp advance In the staple, yet the markets are generally steadier. Exceptionally low prices on wool ana yarn make for the possiiiiiity or. most; tempting offers in prices and qualities of woolens and worsteds for the new sev son. Conditions In footwear are improved ana business shows a fair volume. Jobber still display considerable conservatism, and orders generally are confined to quanti ties sufficient to meet current needs. nRADSTIlElST'S REVIEW OF TR ADM Pratnres of Week. Include Stlmalaw tlost of Retail Trade. NEW YORK, April 28. llratlstreeta to morrow will say: The feature of the week have been A allirlit stimulation of retail trade by warm. bright weather north, west ami east; good proRress In the planting of and growth of leading cereal crops, and satisfactory de velopments as regarda the outlook for leading fruit crops. The greater activity in retail trade In turn Is reflected In a little better business by Jobbers, but -on the other hand, unseasonably wet ana cool weather has checked farming opera tions at tho south and also made for quiet In trade. The net result, the country over, has urobahlv been a total of trade little different from that of the preceding week and hank clearings are not materially different from Hioho of last week. An epitome of Iron and steel trade condi tions can readily be made, i no cut or. 50 cents per ton In Ijike oro prices, which waa announced lat r rlday, has not stimu lated business and furnaces seem to Tae pretty well supplied for current neexis, pig Iron Ib very dull and production la lieintr curtailed. In finished lines new ijiiiBiness is light and mill outputs have de creased. Heavy sales of copper are re porting as having been made at reduced prices. The building trade is inactive anti ma terial markets feel the effects. Paints are dull. Turpentine is considerably off from the top, the price being 78 cents against the top price of 31.14, reached eariy in April. HuslneB failures in the united taxes for the week ending April 27, were 840 against 233 last week, 218 In the like weeut of 1910, 208 in l'.HM, 282 In 1908 and 168 In 1907.
