CHICAGO, April 27.-Favora.hle ralrui In Germany, France and the Axgentlne, as well as In the United State today, worked In the direction of lower prices for wheat. The close left the market &o under last nljrht. In com there was a net decline of !iHo to V'e. and In oats a loan of Ho to Vq"He. At the final gong hog products 'varied from last night's level to 174a2oa below. The wheat market finished steady, but at nearly the bottom prices of the session. Most of the selling was by longs, who at the outset bnlHtered up the May option In an effort to frighten the bears. Dispatches telling of beneficial moisture and warmth caine from so many sources, however, that the market failed of effect. Then, too, the cash trade was alow not only here, but In the norihwest. The final touch of weak ness followed report that seeding for the spring crop In that section was now far advanced. During the day July ranged between AGf&87o. closing VrfHiO down, at 86Vg7c. Increased country sale bad even more to do with overturning an advance In corn than did the action of wheat. July fluctuated from and closed weak, at fcfuMVko, down "o from laat night. Cash grades were steady. No. yellow finished at WfiWKe. Liberal sales by lontra took the edge off the oats market. Hlirn and low limits for July proved to be S2o and Sl'c, with last aales at 810, a net decline of Vtiiftka. NEW YORK. April 27. -The slow advance which has been In progress In the stock market most of the week was Interrupted suddenly In the midst of today's session when publication of the March earnings of the Harriman lines gave the list a pro nounced setback. Southern Pacific reported a decrease of 84.s7.wo In net earnings and Union Paclflo 8346.000. This showing was regarded as especially unsatisfactory In view of reports which the street had heard In the last few days that these roads would make un usually good exhibits. Trading was less active than yesterday, the market growing dull on the decline. There was little pressure to sell stocks on the decline, bear traders fearing to operate boldly. The morning gains were elimi nated In most cases and the close showed small losses on the day in place of the correspondingly small advances of the pre vious days of the week. Certain Isolated Issues Including traction stocks were strong. Amalgamated Copper was heavy probably on account of the Belling of stocks purchased earlier In the week. Trading In United States Steel was less active, but that stock constituted the market's barometer In that buying and selling of these shares were closely scruti nized by those who think the Immediate future of the market Is dependent on cgn dlttons In the steel and Iron Industry. Gold to the amount of 85TiO,00O was shipped to Canada todav and a currency transfer of $150,000 was made to San Fran cisco, making a total transfer of 31.luO.0iX) to the latter city this week. Some plain evidence of the confidence with which the outcome of Mexico's diffi culties Is awaited, was afforded by the sale to a New York syndicate of 810.000.000 of two-year 44 per cent notes of the National Hallways of Mexico. To make another com parison, the receipts for the four days tills week are the lightest for a number of weeks back. Buyers picked out a few of such light and handywelght cattle as Just happened to suit their requirements, paying fully steady prices with yesterday. The trade the first round looked a little brisk and here and there could be- found a salesman who thought that possibly it might be strong. Whatever activity took place at the begin ning was shortlived and the trade settled down Into a slow and at the best no more than, steady market. Undesirable kinds of big heavy, coarse cattle were hard to move and It was a question If they were fully Bteady In all cases. The supply of cows and heifers was so limited that It did not take buyers long to effect a clearance of everything In sight. As a rule sellers were quoting It as a steady market, there being little or no change in either direction. There were no stock cattle or feeders of any consequence In Bight and not enough to really make a market. The reeling, bow. ever, was Just about steady. About 200 cars were re ceived and all weights, ranging from light bacon to heavy lard offerings, were repre sented. Despite the fact that fresh re ceipts give a total for the week thus far that is over three times as great as the four days' total last year, killing gangs on full time Indicate that actual stocks are none too heavy Demand from packers was lively from the start and big droves were put up with little delay. Shippers and speculators pro vided orders for about one-eighth of the supply, but usually discriminated In favor of good butchers and light mixed. Clear ance at 10:30 a. m. was practically com plete. Spreads between different weights showed little change, 5.SO(t5.86 embracing narrow bulk. Lard animals sold at 85.75 and less, while good bacon grades ranged at and above 85.90. Tops at 86 Oo show a nickel margin under yesterday's lone top of 86 05. Representative sales: No. at. Sk. Pr. Ne. At. Wh. Tr. 3U ... 47 II tH 40 4 U 94 94...., 17 II 14 74 40 40 21...., 14... . .... Prices ranged from weak to a dime off on medium as well as extra good offerings, but the demand at these levels was reason ably active. Shorn lambs, well conditioned and of good quality, attracted best Inquiry and frequently sold to better advantage than other classes of stock. Supplies had very fair volume with usual asosrtment. Western bred animals pre dominated In the run and woolsklns were the exception tc the rule. Mexican strings were largely confined to wooled lambs shipped by various Nebraska feeders who handle that kind of animals each year. There were few handy wooled western lambs on sale. Choice Mexicans still In the fleece sold up as high as 85.90, Indicating a 85.00 limit for staple westerns. Shorn lambs weighing around So to 90 pounds brought as much as 85. 601-5. 66. These prloes show very nar row margins under extreme quotation tor shorn Mexicans, Spring lambs have prao tlcally quit coming, so that condition of trade la nominal. The sheep market presented a weaker appearance, but no very reliable test of the entire list of values was possible. Shorn ewes, similar to the 83.75 kind Tues day went at 83.65 and shorn 'vethers dropped from 84.00, also a Tuesday's sale, to 8-195. Other offerings, both wooled and shorn, sold at figures relatively as weak. Quotations, Wooled Lambs: Spring, 35-00 JiO.OO; Mexicans. 35.50(ii6.90: westerns, 85.00 fjiS OO. WASHINGTON, April 27. Refusal of th) Interstate Commerce commission to permit the principal railways of the west to ad- . ranee their rates on the transportation ot cement, for the reason that the carrier are alleged to need additional revenue, la the feature of a decision handed down to day In the Important, Portland cement case. General advances bf from H to 6 cents a hundred pounds In rates on cement were prepared by the carriers In trans-Missouri territory to become effective Sept. 1. 1910, and affected a territory which produce approximately two-thirds of the Portland, cement made In the I'nlted States. Cement Is a commodity of comparatively low grade In transportation, but In com mercial bulk Is exceeded only by coal. Iron ore and grain. The advances proposed were attacked by producers and shipper) and, pending an Investigation the commis sion suspended them first until November! 1, 1910, and subsequently until July L 191L The points of destination to which tha proposed rates apply cover a wide range of territory extending from Illinois and Tenitcssee on the east to the Rocky Moun tain errltory on the west and Involve rates throughout the country. In the opinion promulgated today which was prepared by Commissioner Mo Chord, some of the advances are sustained and many of them are disapproved. The commission did not accept as decisive the statement of the carriers that present cement rates are so low as to be unrein tin eratlv and that the commodity does not. bear Its Just proportion of the burden Ot transportation, the testimony on that fea ture of the case being regarded as "very meager." Approval of tha Increases Is glren the proposed rates from Portland, Colo., to all destinations; from Kansas City ter ritory and points In Kansas and Oklahoma to points In Texas, uid from Bonner Springs and Yocemento, Kansas, to various points In Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Mis souri, Nebraska, Wyoming and New Mex ico. 'With these exceptions," the coramlea sloner says, "the propriety of ' the new rates has not been shown." The remaining rates appear to bo ma terially higher than they were for a long, period and "the carriers are requested to withdraw them forthwith." If they should not comply with th commission's request before May 16, an order will be Issued to maintain existing rates for at least two year. W. E. REED IS AGAIN AFTER THE SENATORIAL TOGA Madison Man Makes His Announce ment Early in - the Game, The first light to brighten the dernocratla horiion for the next senatorial campaign has been lit by Willis E.
