Comparative Cost of Materials
Arthur O. Clan., Architect,
m
N GIVING a comparative cost of
building material, the writer
will make no attempt to make
exact comparison In dollar
and cent. Contractor price
vary to a considerate extent
In different location, and even contractors
of equal skill figuring from the ame plan
and In the same city, will quote price
sometimes varying from each other a
much as 20 or SO per cent on the total cot
of a home. This fact emphasises the ad
visability of taking a number of estimate
from reliable builder. Each man figuring
la Influenced to ome extent according to
hi desire to secure the contract, the
amount of work he ha on hand, the time
of the year, the amount of skilled labor
obtainable, etc. A contractor often would
not put In the same estimate for a house
at different season of the year. For these
reasons, a certain amount of latitude must
be allowed when taking up the comparative
cost In different localities, but for general
purposes, in determining how economically
a building can be built, and meet one' de
sire and requirements, the following facts
and figure will prove of valuable assist
ance. About the first question asked every
architect by a prospective client Is the
comparative cost between an outside frame
wall and a masonry wall. The writer ha
frequently taken comparative estimate
and find the following table will serve
the most practical purpose:
Taking the different forms of construc
tion In the order of cost, and using a J7.0no
house In ordinary frame construction as a
basis, the following figure will prove ap
proximately correct for most houses. We
will assume that the $7,000 house has the
usual construction of studding, weather
boarding, good building paper, four-lap
siding on the outside, with lath and plaster
on the Inside. To shingle the exterior In
place of clapboards, would cost approxi
mately SCO mora, or less than 1 per cent.
To furr out the lath exterior with a good
grade of metal lath, and apply a first class
stucco veneer of cement would Increase the
cost about iXO or about 3 Der cant. Tn
make the outside walls of hollow vitrified
tile with a cement atucco veneer on the
outside, plastering directly on the tile on
the Inside would cost about ST. 100. an In
crease of $400 or atrlfle over f per cent.
In extremely cold climates it would be nec
essary to furr and lath before plastering on
the Inside, an additional Increase In cost
of about $100. To build the outside walls
of studding, lath and plastered on the in
side, with weather boarding and paper on
the outside, a small air space and a four
brick veneer with brick costing about SIS
per thousand delivered, would cost S".4r)0.
an Increase of $450. or about ti'4 per cent. To
build a solid twelve-Inch brick wall, paying
$8 per thousand delivered for the common
brick' and $1 for the face brick, furred, lath
and plastered on the Inside, would on a
house of this slis cost $7.KH0. an Increase
of $800 or a little over 10 per cent.
In regard to durability, a clapbuarded and
shingle exterior will last about the same
Itngth of time, as yet no satisfactory,

cement stucco on the outside. Past experi
