LIQUIDATION IN FEW ISSUES Missouri Parlfle Voder Preasare Dar ing Morn of t heDny and Declines Sharply Selling of Fertiliser Stocks f'ontlnaea. NEW YORK.'Aprll 17The level of prices :on me Mock exchange was barely disturbed 1 by today s trading. IJauiriBtlon In a few Issues, particularly the fertiliser stocks, was almost the only noticeable movement and It had no effect on the general market. Missouri Pacbic waa under pressure dur ing much of the day and declined sharply. The only other Uould security to be sim ilarly affected was Wabash 4a which yielded the same amjunt. Selling of the fertiliser stocks continued steadily during the day and It was said that an Important bull account created In connection with the listing of Virginia-Carolina Chemical in Paris was being closed out. The utterances of the chairman of the United States Steel corporation at the an nual meeting did not present the situation In a new light, except that they gave offi cial confirmation to reports that business In the laat fortnight had been slower. United States Steol shares closed at nearly the low point of the day. Foreign exchange rates continued firm, making a further slight advance from the higher figures at the close of last week. The firmness In exchange rates apparently Is due to the increased activity and the hardening of discounts In the London mar ket. Advices from the west gave no Indication of substantial improvement In trade condi tions, although it was said there was a moderate Improvement In the tonnage movement on some railroads. Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par value, 82.667,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Number of sales and leading quotation on stocks were as follows: Salu. Hlvh. Low. Close. Still they were smaller than the average Monday's run for the last few weeks. The arrivals consisted largely of beef steers, with a liberal sprinkling of cow stuff and a showing of stock cattle. Owing to the very light receipts of stack ers and feeders laat week and to the fact that everything of that description was cleaned up very promptly speculative buy ers were anxious for fresh supplies this morning, with the result that stock oattls and feeders were the first In the yards to sell. While the offerings were not large there waa quite a little sprinkling aud everything In sight sold In vary good sea son. The prices paid were steady with laat week's close or a little stronger than the close of tho week before. Good cattle sold up as high as 16.85. Beef steers were a little slow, buyers being unwilling to put on anything, as they were anticipating larger receipts for Tuesday. Still the offerings kept changing hands and by midday practically every thing In sight had been disposed of. The prices paid were not materially different from those prevailing at the close ot last week. There were soma cattle In ths yards good enough to bring 16.30. Cows and heifers were not very active. but still there was a fair demand, and the yards were cleaned In decent season at prices not much different from laat week Quotations on cattle: Uood to choice keef steers, K.Wat.'M, fair to good beef steers, lo.WKgH.'O; common to fair beet steers, 16.20i6.80; good to choice cows and heifers, 16. 0046. 70; fair to good cows and heifers, !4.76a'6.00; common to fair cows ana neiiers. 4J.B4.it; gooa 10 onoice siocs ers and feeders. 16.10iU6.85; fair to good stockera and feeders, 16. 0Hj6. 10; common to fair atockers and feeders. !4.2506.vv: stock heifers. 14.26&6.26; veal calves, 44.0"4J7.W; bulls, stago, eo., (4.uue.la. Supplies were limited and shipping deinamd waa lively and broad Prices ruled higher from the opening and bulk showed an average advance of a dime. Medium weight butchers and bacon offerings sold to beat advantage and where any discrimination cropped out. It was di rected against animals of lard character. Conservatively described, the lard hog market was to better than 6'glOc higher than Saturday' sales of heavies. Practically all of a alxty-flve-car run changed hands readily, clearance being made shortly after 10 o'clock. Speculative orders furnished an outlet for about 40 per cent of receipts, the largest percentage claimed by thla claxa of buyers In many months. Choice bacon hogs sold as high as 14 26 and good butchers ranged around 16 Ofgj 6 lb Heavy grades moved at !.o and less, auallty and weight determining the price. Representative Bales: Ma. At. Sh. In the neighborhood of twenty doubles arrived, shorn lambs, woo led Mexican lambs and western ewes making up the big bulk. Mexican lambs sold as high as Iti.oO, but no very good westerns still In the fleece were - available. Choice westerns might possibly bring 15.80. Extra good shorn lambs are quotable at 14.60Ctt5.0i, but trad ing was rather quiet esrly and sales were few. There were not enough spring lambs Included in supply to make a test of values. Various prices and quotations Indicate ad vances of ltitiioc on the general run of lambs. Business In sheep was largely confined to ewes and prices for the most ruled strong to a little higher. Iemand was not very active, however, and slack competi tion gave the Impression that better mar gins were allowed only under protest. Fairly decent ewes moved around 13.75 and prime kinds would probably stop at 14.40; Trade in wethers and yearllnss was practically barren.
