A NEW L1FESAVING AGENT Ant l-Menliigllls serum Cots Down Mortality More Than One. Third. The experiments which the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York city, has been making with antl-menlngltis serum have been so successful that the management of the Institute Issued a state ment to the effect that the curative effi ciency of the scrum might now be re &aV.Ml a scientifically established and that t ie serum might now "take It place with t acclne and diphtheria anti-toxin as a-i approved agency for the protection of public health." The Institute ha been manufacturing and distributing the serum free for mora than a year to hospitals and physicians all over the country. The institute merely stipulated that the hospital or physician taking the serum should report as to Its effectiveness. According to the reports sent In, the serum has cut down the mortality from cerebro-splnal meningitis to less than one third of what It was before the serum came to be known and used. Having thus established the scientific reliability of the serum, the Institute is now going to cease manufacturing and distributing It, and will apply the funds which have been used In this way In the last few years along other experimental lines. Greene of the Institute, should be used In the early stages of the disease. It la injected into the lumbar section of the spinal cord. "The mortality of epidemic cerebro spinal meningitis has been recognized in the past a running from 30 to 70 per cent." said one physician. "The discovery of the aml-meningltls serum gives definite piomise of cutting down the mortality of the disease from about 50 to 15 per cent. "Cerebro-splnal meningitis is due to the activities of a little organism called the dlpococcus Intracellular!, which attacks the nerve roots and membranes of the spinal cord and brain. The epidemic form of tli disease was first recognized only about 100 years ago in Geneva, Switzerland. The first outbreak In this country took place In Massachusetts In The dis ease visited Ireland twice In the middle of the last century very fatally Indeed. A pitiable asjct of the disease la that It attack those who are despondent and those who don't have food enough. Squalid tene ment dweller and soldier In crowded and Ill-kept barrack are especially a prey to It. . j "When the microbe once takes hold, the substances of the spinal cord and brain quickly become most mlllgnantly congested, and death sometimes occur In a few hour. Before the discovery of the aerum, about all that could be done to fight the disease was to employ purging and leech ing, put Ice bags along the spine, give drugs to deaden the pain, and the admin istering of mercurial and iodide and counter-irritants.
