T46 I 80 M k I 70 t Nl I W HOGS General conditions that were more or leas promising enabled sellers of hogs to obtain slightly higher prices for offer ings this morning. On butchet weights It waa a strong nickel higher market, much of the $6.36 quality of yesterday going Into packers' pens at $6.40. tin lights the trade showed a flat nickel advance, as this class of stock attracted more competition than mixed or heavy grades. Receipts were of very fair volume, but demand waa reasonably broad and final clearance was practically complete. Move ment lacked life, however, and It waa well along toward midday before the bulk had changed hands. Shipping purchaaea were largely confined to bacon weights, and Inquiry from this quarter was dis criminating and rather limited Long strings ranged at 8 40a 6 45. I .ard and rough packing loads had to sell at $6.36 and leas, while choice light animals reached $6.60. The latter price. It will be noted, Is a dime higher than yesterday's top, this peculiar phase ot the trade being at least partly due to poor assortment of bacon weights yesterday Representative Bales 1.143 Totals 5.506 9.362 7.431 CATTLE Receipts of cattle were quite a little larger than yesterday, 208 cars being reported ln, but still the total for the two days foots up only 9,360, which is a falling oft of almost L000 head aa compared with the same days a week ago, but Is about the same as a year ago. The market as a whole was In a good healthy condition and pretty much everything ln the yards that waa at all desirable had changed hands in good season In the morning. Beef steers as compared with yesterday were steady to strong and the demand for desirable kinds reasonably active, so that an early clearance waa effected. Good cat tle having both quality and flesh sold up as high as $6.25. For the two days the market Is a good lOo higher than laat week's close. Cowb were generally steady, but choloe light, fat heifers were if anything a little stronger, being ln very good demand. The general market on butcher stock, however, might be described as steady to strong the same as beet steers. Strictly good feeders were ln fair request at steady prices, while the medium to com mon kinds were slow and weak. Offerings Included several strings of prime western stock but Mexicans were relatively scarce and no very thorough test of extreme quota tions waa possible. Western lambs sold up aa high aa $6.35, this sale indicating a limit or near-limit of $6.60 for choice Mexicans. The shorn lambs market is still on a narrow basis of course, but recent business has been showing an average spread of about 76c under sales of similar Quality wooled am malju Freshly shorn lambs have been moving around 36.26u6.e0. Heavy offerings. still ln the fleece, are quotable at or near $6.00. Demand for the better classes of sheep was healthv from tha opening, packer pro ducing large enough orders to make a de cent clearance of bulk in very good season. Western ewes reached $5.00 on two or three different oocaslons and Mexican ewes topped at $5.10. Western wethers brought as much as $5.30, a price which calls for quality rather than handy-weight It choice, handy wethers were available, they would probably command small premiums over the weighty kinds that have claimed credit for tops on most days lately. Yearlings, either wooled or shorn, were scarce. Some Mexicans from western Ne braska feed lots arrived and sold at $6.78. a figure that may safely be placed at the top of the list. Good western yearlings are wanted around $5.60.
