the beginning of the week a little stronger

During the next two days prices eased off
iioi" rapioiy. so that any gain that was
made earlier In the week was wiped out,
and at the close of the week killing cattle
are selling steady, or at least nearly steadv,
with prices prevailing at the close of laat

ueei Bieers tney declined fully as much
when the market onoe started down, so
mat prices at the close on that class of
cattle are also no better than at the close
ui iHBi week.
Dsirable kinds of-feeders, more espe
ciany the so-called 'green" cattle that
have not been on feed, havo been good
oeneio an weea ana are practically steady
with one week ago. On the other hand
the medium kinds and common thin Block
ers have declined somewhat owing to the
lack of a good buying support from the
country, and they are safely 1015c lower
than last week, some sellers In fact would
say more than that.

HOGS For a Saturday, hog; trade this
morning was rather peculiar. Quite a Utile
business was transacted early at figures
10c higher, but two or three of the larger
packers held out for unchanged or very
nearly steady cost. Shippers and specula
tors bought more freely than any other
class of buyers at the advance and fur
nished an outlet for about 2o per cent of a
piO-load supply. Small packing droves
were put up shortly after the market
openeo at pi ices around a nickel higher,
but the demand became very slack later
and final clearance was made at figures
no better than those of yesterdav.
More or less activity fer.turefl move
ment while it was possible for sellers to
obtain the advance, but as soon as prices
began to settle to yesterday's levels, trad
ing became dull in both divisions.
Prices on long strings remained at re
cent narrow spreads, a large portion of
total receipts moving at $6.75.t6.5. Choice
bacon animals sold as high as $0.96, which
figure wns also extreme high price a week
ago. Extra heavy and rough packing
grades had to move at $6.70 and less.
Today's early Improvement .leaves the
trade steady to only a shade lower than
last Saturday's market. Trend to prices
lately has ben generally weaker, due to
bearish conditions of supplv. demand an!
product levels, but midweek losses were
almost wholly regained yesterday and
today.

NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Speculative Activity Restricted by

AUTI-TRUST DECISIONS AWAITED
Infflnetire ef Kxtra Heeelon Mollified

Activities of t omrrii Short
of tirnerel Hevlalon.
NEW YORK. March li The sluggish
ness of the securities maiket last week In
lace of happenings with an Important
besting on affairs testified to the previous
anticipatory moves which had been timde
In speculation. Other events, still awaited,
obviously have their part also In restrict
ing speculative activity. Most Influential
of these, In the stock market estimation,
Is the supreme court decisions In the anti
trust cases. The Immediate effect of these
decisions Is, of course, problematical, but
it Is hoped that when they are handed
down the financial market will be made
responsive to other factors which are now
held In restraint by the desire to see that
question cleared tip.
The proportioii suddenly assumed by the
Mexican problem tended to reduce specu
lative activity, although the authoritative
explanation of the governments military
movements had a reassurrtng effect. The
reported disposition to limit the activities
of the extra session of congress short of
sn attempt at general tariff revision had
Its part In modifying the Influence of the
subject.
Further evidence of backward trade ac
tivity and of diminished railroad earnings
had a part In halting speculation. The
I nlted States Steel corporations monthly
report of unfilled orders, however, showed
that the steady Improvement which has
been In progress In the steel trade of late
had not been Interrupted and the Increased
total of unfinished business at ths first
of the month made the showing a satis
factory one. But there were few indica
tions of a material Improvement elsewhere.
The effect of last year's trade reaction, as
shown In the annual reports of a number of
large corporations, was emphasised by re

the volume of mercantile credits of the
country's foreign commerce.
The government s report of farm re
