There Is good strength on the corn mar

tinued export sales, which have kept
stocks from Increasing, Cash values have
Dot advanced with the futures.
Wheat opened strong ana made some
headway early, but weakened later when
northwest markets declined. Crop Expert

slow takers. The market was weak and
lower at the close.
Corn was erorig from the start and

CHICAGO GRA1 AND PROVISIONS
Keatares of the Trading?
Prices on Board of
and Closing;
Trade.
CHICAGO, March . Hprlngllke weather
and millers holding aloof made a weak
finish today for wheat. The close showed
a loss of He to V. compared with forty
eight hours before. In corn, there was a
net advance of S&4C to He, and In oats
a rain of a shade. Provisions were left
unchanged to 10c below.
Reports were current that owing to high
temperature plowing was In progress as
far up as the Canadian northwest. This
condition, together with the fact that an
advance of 4c since the middle of last
week had failed to stimulate any demand
on the part 'of manufacturers of flour,
proved too much In the end for owners
, of wheat. During" the middle of the day
there waa a decided display of strength,
owing to a big decrease In the I'nlted
States visible supply. It was pointed out
alao that primary receipts this season had
been 37.000,000 bushels less than last year,
but that exports had fallen only 23.000,000
bushels. However, the market waa suf
fering from the effects of a weak start,
due to disappointing cablea. The close
waa easy at almost the lowest point of
the session. May ranged from W4,c to
Wio. with last sales AfcttiO down,-at 1
Corn bulged because of figures Indi
cating a farm demand greatly In excess
of a year ago. May varied between
4sc and 49"s4c. closing steady at HWHc
up. at 47!4,c. Caah grades were firm. No.
3 yellow finished at 47w47S4c.
Oats, though following corn, did not
do so In a radical way. High and low
limits for May were 31c and 30i,o. with
the final price a shade above Saturday
night at aOH'S'SOV'.
Realising by packers eased off pro
visions. Pork closed a shade to 10c lower;
lurd 2V4t(Tc and ribs unchanged to 7Hc
decline.

CATTLE There were 210 cara of cattle
reported In this morning, which was a fair
run for the first day of the week, being
about on a par with last week and larger
than a year ago by a few hundred head.
The market as a rule waa rather dull and
uninteresting and no especially new fea
tures were developed during the day.
Buyers all seemed to want a few heef
cattle, but the demand was not sufficiently
"stMn iu maxe a Drisk trade, with the re
sult that the market was more or less of a
drag throughout the morning. As a rule
sellers had anticinated mnti atrnnr mar
ket and were more or less disappointed that
nuyers aia not take hold more freely, it
might best be descrihed aa slow and
steady with last week.
Cows and heifers did not show any ma
terial change. Here and there where a
salesman .lappened to have something on
the heifer order that seemed to especially
appeal to buyers it was possible to get a
good, strong price. On the other hand the
general market was no better than steady
with the feeling on come of the Inferior
grades weak.
The feeder market waa without any
change; the trade was not very brisk and
prices at the best no more than steady.

opened la promising fashion this morning,
offerings moving with considerable free

encouraging reports from live and dressed

the price.

HOOS Peculiar conditions surrounding
the hog trade caused a market that waa
very unusual In several respects this morn
ing. At first giance the natural basis tor
prices promised to be higher. Loral receipts
were limited and supplies at other points
were normal. From a different viewpoint,
advances were apparently unwarranted;
warm weather is aproachlng, stocks of
provisions are showing some Increase and
trade In product Is bearish ,
rl-culutors held bullish Idais early snd
traits opened at figures aoout a nickel
higher A few selt-cled loads of ba.'on
weights sold at this advance, packers re
maining under coer. 1-ater. after the mar
ket "went dead," packers entered the al
leys and put up their droves on a steady
to strong baale. There was practically no
life to movement, however, and it was
well along toward midday before anything
like a clearance was made,
i choice bacou bogs reached $7.00 early,

ST. JOHNS WATER WORKS & LIGHTING COMPANY
The St. Johns Water Works & Lighting Company is a corporation organized
under the laws of the State of Oregon, operating in the City of St. Johns, furnish
ing, without competition, water for domestic, commercial and municipal use in
said city.
ST. JOHNS
St. iTohns is a city of about eight thousand inhabitants, whose city limits
abut those of Portland, on the North. It is a manufacturing city and virtually jt
part of the City of Portlandthe street car and electric lines of which latter city
furnish transportation and lighting for St. Johns. Its shipping facilities by land
and water attract to St. Johns many commercial and manufacturing institutions,
and its accessibility has caused it to become a residential district for many who
are in business in Portland.
FRANCHISE
The Company operates under a franchise granted by the Town of St. Johns,
prior to its organization as a city, which franchise is for the term of twenty-five
years from 1903, and contains the rates to be charged for the various kinds of
service, which rates are reasonable and afford the Company an adequate return
upon its investment.
The legality of the issue, the mortgage and the franchise have been investi
gated by Rieherd W. Montague, of Portland, Oregon, and our own counsel.
The physical condition of the plant has been investigated by competent en
gineers and also by the officers of this Company.
Copies of legal opinion and engineers' reports will be submitted on request.

NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Market Strong in Spite of Virtually
Same Conditions.
SHOE! HOLDINGS EXTENSIVE
Reports of Two Independent Steel
Companies Show Urt Cains In
Earnlsta Vo Betterment In
Position of Railroads.
NEW YORK. Marcn The stock mar
ket was strong" today In spite of the fact
that virtually the same conditions pre
vailed as those whicn Drought about re
cessions on previous days, the extent of
the holdings of short stocks probably ac
counted In large part for the absence of
selling pressure. When it b--aniH apparent
that the selling movement of last week was
not to be continued there waa some cover
ing of short contracts, which, with a
renewal of bullish tactics, put up prices
of most of the standard stocks a point or
more in the muining. Thereafter the
market was dull and the close was gen
erally below this top level.
The annual reports of two independent
steel companies Cambria and Bathlehera
showed that they had mads large gains
In the earnings. The Hethlehem company
reported the largest February earnings In
Its history, with a surplus of about 14 per
oent on the preferred stock. The I'ambi la's
net earnings Increased by 2 i'J2.0ii to $1.
&44.000. New orders of the United Mates
Steel corporation were reported as being
the largest of any month since early last
ear.
The day's developments gave no Indica
tion of any betterment In the position of
the railroads. The (lieat Northern re
ported a decrease ol ;i0tw in Its net earn
InKS for January and the Wabash a lesier
shrinkage.
No changes were reported In time money
and brokers stated that the market was
duller than for several months.
The bond market n steady. Total
sales, par value. S2.463.0u0. I'nlted States
bonds were unchanged.
