March 2 Uneasy shorts In a scramble to buy wheat forced prices up most of tha time today. There was also considerable bull campaigning; by a nutn ber of large traders. Chief help came from a statement that only 8.800,000 buithels re mained at present In the hands of Cana dian farmers. Closing prices were easy, however, at a net advance of V4o to He Latest figures showed corn to a above last night, oats off a shade to '.c and hog products at lCtf12o to 464c47c decline. Speculative buying of wheat was almost entirely on local account. There was much taking of profit 'by longs during the swells. Not a little selling was done, too, by a few big shorts who appeared anxious to reinstate lines previously covered. Ini tial Impetus for an upturn developed from the fact that Argentina shipments were unexpectedly light, but an offset arrived later in news that forwardlngs from India had been greatly augumented. Part of the setback due to a shutdown by a large local flour mill. During the session, May fluctuated between tftVtC and 0c, with last sales VtfSo up at 896!c. Liberal export clearances mad com firm. Despite a bulge that oats displayed In common with other grains the feeling in the end was tame. May varied inside of 3oo and amo, with the close a shade down at SO-l.ffiWic. NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Sharp Declines Kesult from Heavy Selling; in Active Issues. NERVOUSNESS AS TO OUTLOOK Aril Ices that F.mtra session of ( on areas Is Ierinltely Km peeled at Washlnarton t anaea Kear of Tariff Legislation. NKVV YORK. March 2 Sharp declines among stocks more commonly traded In resulted from heavy selling today on the Stock exchange. The prominent Issues lost from 1 to 3 points and almost all of them fell below the low level established last Friday. The market opened weak and sold off In the first hour. In the afternoon the sell ing movement was extended and there was a further break. The market grew fevpr Ish and fell off steadily to the close, which was at almost the lowest prices of the day. Liquidation ot long stocks was In part responsible for the downward movement, although short selling reached large pro portions and was a potent factor. Stocks showed little evidence of support. Nervousness as to the outcome for the near future was apparent In the growth of the bearish feeling. Advices that an extra session of congress was definitely expected at Washington, already the most disturbing clement, served to increase ap prehensions of tariff legislation. The day was not without good news. The announcement by the head of the Har rlman lines that double tracking of those roads was to proceed regardless of the freight rates decision was followed by a statement of the Krie directors' intention to expend all surplus of the year over the fixed charges tor improvements. London was again a heavy seller of our stocks here and total sales from that cen ter in this market thus far this week are believed to approximate ti,O00 shares. Hoods were heavy. ISO 8tW Jk2 .135 1.778 Totals 3.548 7,963 6.093 CATTLE For a Thursday receipts of cat tle were quite liberal, but not so large as a week at;o, and the total for the four days showed a falling off of slightly over l.tmo head, as compared with the same days last week, and a loss of about 3.000 head as compared with a year ago. The quality of the cattle here today was very good, that is. there were several bunches of better cattle than have been coming of late. There was a fair demand for beef steers, but the market was not so brisk as yes terday, and about all that could be said of It would be to call It as steady with yes terday, although here and there It was possible to find a salesman who thought that he had secured stronger prices. The quality of the cattle being pretty good, the top sales show up a great deal better than anything of late. Thus the best cattle here wlhch were prime, sold up to $6.40, the highest price paid on tuts market since January, when $6.40 was paid. Cows ana belters were good sellers at generally steady prices. Still the market, as was the case with beef steers, was de ficient In snap and activity, the cattle not selling as readily as yesterday. Stockers and feeder did not show any material chango, the offerings generally selling in about the same notches as yes terday. It might be added that the market on kill ing cattle Is generally 16(&25c higher than the low point last week. Straight shipments of wethers were very scarce but cult offs from year lings made a creditable top of $1.50. I .a nibs found a ready outlet, but there was no appreciable improvement In the scale of valuea. Firm figures bought the big ends of small receipts, good to choice kinds going at $5.r5.95. Animals suitable for final finish nnd shearing held at normal margins under desiralilo killers. Barring Monday's weakness, the market for sheep on all days this week has been stronger. Current quotations on ewes, wethers and yearlings show net advances of 1525c as compared with prices at last week's close.
