CH1CAOO. Feb. 25. Wheat today slid
under any down grade record made In the
last three years. Scantiness of domestic
demand, no forelim outlet and reciprocity
delay at Washington furnished plenty of
mason. The close was weak at a net de
cllne of Ho to a full cent a bushel. There
also was a net loss of 9&tao in corn, c
on oats and l''3 for, provisions.
- A new angle developed concerning re
clproclty. It was argued that postpone
ment extended the period of suspense for
the wheat trade and that, therefore, the
effect was to favor the bears. Inen, too
the cables, the poor cash Inquiry and the
fine weather were all aiiulnst the maraet.

OMAHA. Feb. 2". 1911.
The area of high pressure has continued
slowly eastward during the last twtty
four hours and now overlies the southern
states. An area of low pressure extends
from the extreme tipper Mississippi and
Missouri valleys Bouthwest over the lower
Rocky mountain region. This low is at
tended by increasing cloudiness and un
settled weather In the valleys and Is fol
lowed by snow flurries throughout the
mountain ' districts. A marked rise In
temperature has occurred In the oentrai
valleys and west to the mountains within
the last twenty-four hours, and generally
warmer weather prevails everywhere, ex

provinces, where colder weather Is moving
In. With the depression now moving over
the valleys the outlook Is for lnrreasinK
cloudiness and unsettled weather In this

on the stock market today there was quite
a little realizing by traders and the mar
ket took on an appee.rance of renewed
strtngth. with an Incense of activity as
prices show eo a enon.cy to Improve.
Canadian Pvclflc, wh.'ch, of course. Is not
concerned directly, but only through own
ership of a r. -,!roliing Interest In the Soo
and other American roads. In the discus
sion of the Interstate commission which
was the strongest feature, llsni on mod
erate transactions to a new high record.
Steel preferred showed quite a little
strength and Its advance seemed to exert
a sympathetic Influence on the common
slock. The agricultural stocks were the
strongest of all. American Agricultural
Chemical advanced several points and Virginia-Carolina
Chemical made a somewhat
similar gain on rumors of an approaching
settlement of the German potash situation.
American cotton oil sympathized with the
strength In the fertiliser group.
liOndon Prices Advance.
Even before the opening of this morn
ing's market It was evident-that yester
day's excitement had been considerably al
layed. The early prices for American
shares In Indon showed thit the English
market had promptly followed New York's
recovery or yesterday afternoon; In some
cases Ixindon prices were above our own
closings of yesterday.
Sales on the stock exchange today were
291. u. shares. Sales yesterday, ' which were
mostly in railroad stocks, were 1.4H.0 93S
shares, the hiavy transactions being due
to the rate decision of the Interstate Com
merce commission.
The entire tret d of 'business during the
week has been of a constructive nature,
liuslnets Is not nctive; neither is It slack,
t;iking nil industries Into consideration.
T he volume of demimd shows a little In
crease from week to week. Bank clear
ings Indicate this. They more Immediately
reflict corditions than do railroad earn
ings, which are never an Index of week-to-week
trade volumes. Of largest Im
portance is the fact that the crops are all
getting a good start, and If they can get
well through the treacherous month of
March they ought to show another good
aggregate of vulue for 1911.

The general trade conditions of the
country shows Improvement.. Naturally,
there Is more business at this time of the

Wltn the exception of the south and

to Increased consumption of merchandise
during the week and there has been an
enlarged distribution In various branches,
although cc nervatism has prevailed In re
gard to purchases, merchants pursuing the
policy of frequent buying In moderate
amounts, rather than the old way of stock
ing up for the season at one time.
This keeps supplies In the hanns of dis
tributers within reasonsble limits, and
shows that business Is being conducted
upon a safe basis. The disparity between
the prices or cotton goods and the cost
of the raw material which manufacturers
have on hand would have resulted In more
continuance of curtailment of production
than has been noticed for some time past,
but this has prevented any accumulation
of stocks.
The financial authorities In Chicago esti
mate that the banks of the vast agricul
tural region west of that city have de
creased loans 25 per cent, representing the
liquidation of land mortgages, 'ine p.a.ueis
of the south have thus far received about
$125,000,000 more for the current cotton crop
than for the previous one and they, too,
have been paying off mortgages. Further
Improvement was reported this week In
ollH.condltlonS'throughout the grain and
cotton belts, which .Justifies previous as
sertions that. the. acreage planted this
spring will be a record one.
- Conditions In the West.
The' Industrial conditions show improve
ment. It Is believed that the unfilled ton
nage of the United States Steel corporation
as of December 31. 19)0, marked the cul
mination of the shrinkage, and that" the
bookings will- continue on the increase for
the remainder of the year at least. T-- un
filled tonnage ' on January -31, 1911," was
given, by the steel corporation at 3.110,119,
an Increase of 4'W.OOO tons. This increase,
as Is generally known, was the result of
decreased operations and Increased book
ings. The condition of business In the west Is
reflected In the Improvement In railroad
Burettes in the great agricultural and
mining sections. It was at first felt that
the decision of the Interstate Commerce
commission in the rate advance case would
react in Americans, as the foreigners have
laid a great deal of store In higher rates,
but the successful location In Paris of
5U,000,OiiO Union Pacific 4 per cent bonds
in all the excitement annulled this opinion,
even though It la probable that the nego
tiations had been about completed before
the opinion was rendered.
It is safe to estimate the amount nf
American bonds and notes taken by Europe
since January 1 at $150,0U0,0U0 to- $200,0u0,00,
which supplements the commercial trade
balance in the first seven months of the
financial year of $363,000,000. This excess of
exports from June SO to January 31 has
only twice been surpassed In the last six
teen years, once In 19iH, when It amounted
to HM,)0(), and 1901, when It reached
3, 1 itH , vOU.

CATTLE There were no fresh receipts
of cattle today and nothing or any conse
quence In the yards upon which to base an
estimate of the market. Still the telling
was about steady. Receipts this week have
been rather moderate, showing a falling
off of around 4,u00 bead as-compared -wltn
last week and also with the corresponding
week of last year.
The week started out with tho market
firm and fairly active on all kinds of kill
ers, both beef steers and butcher stock.
Commencing with Tuesday, however, tne
situation changed most decidedly, the mar
ket becoming extremely slow and dull,
with a downward tendency to values from
that time on until the close of the week.
As already pointed out In these columns
the decreased consuming demand Incident
to the lenten season and unseasonable
winter weather decreased the buying de
mand 'to such an extent that practically
all kinds of killing cattle worked down
ward for the lack of sufficient buying sup-
Sort. This was not only true of the mar
et at this point, but In a general way
would apply to practically all markets of
the, country, eastern aa well as western.
At the close of the week prices here are
around lur2jo lower on the general run of
beef steers, cows and heifers.
The market for half fat or warmed up
feeders has been rather alow and weak
owing to a lack of competition from pack
ers. On the other hand "green" feeders,
that In, cattle that have not been fed for
market, were in good demand all week
and commanded firm prices every day.
Quotations on cattle: Oood to choice beef

. HOQS--The market for hogs Was sensi
tive and changeable this morning. Shlpiera
selected various loads of bacon weights
early at generally steady prices. First por
tions of droves put up by packers cost
about a nickel lower, but trade has a strong
spot after movement was fairly atarted and
most of the nickel decline was regained.
Later demand became dull.
Inquiry from all quarters was active and
quiet by turns, the big end of a' heavy
Saturday supply moving Into second hands
In very good season. Light grades, averag
ing around 200 pounds, met with usual
preference and sold at usual premiums.
Heavies were slow sellers at low figures.
Poor support from shippers on most days
this week, added to bearish conditions In
the east, were factors that helped packers
to keep the market under control, present
values averaging about Mi 100 lower than
those of a week ago. Some Increase in Re
ceipts Is also credited with bearish In
fluence, but this Increase was checked more
or less by inability of shippers to deliver
their full quota of offerings over roads
that ware almost Impassable early In the
week. I,ocal supply shows a total that is
right around 16,000 head heavier than last
week's total receipts.

Wednesday prices have been on the decline,

later, applies to all classes of stock.
Ewes made up the big end f.f sheep offfr

strictly prime article to re.ich $4. 25. Choice
wethers are selling at small mnrglns over
best ewes, while yearlings would have to be
toppy to command 5 (.
The general trend of the lamb market
was lather erratic, Wednesday's ea'es
showing some advnnce v.lth tops at $l 15.
Weakness Thursday gave the trade the
same humpback appearance that featured
sheep, the close finding best kinds of light
lambs around $6 00. All of these prices ap
ply to wooled stock, of course, as the per
centsge of shorn animals has been too
small to afford anything like a test of
values.
