CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS

CHICAGO, Feb. 24. PlaylnsT for a rally
appeared to be the favorite diversion today
In the wheat pit on rhanfte. The outcome
was a success In reftard to new crop fu

at last night s figure. July and Septem

final pong, corn was Su V to H net lower,
oats off Sifr'.c and provisions showing; oc

There waa a decided disposition among
wheat traders to Ignore the weakness of
th stock market, It was equally apparent
that the absence of rash demand here had
cwased for the time being to have power
to close down prices. What proved to be
the determining Influence came in the
ahape of July buying on the part of the
local elevator men and others who pro
fessed a belief that May delivery would
go to a discount as compared with th
later months.
Primary receipts were light and there
was a decrease on the stock In hand at
Minneapolis. However, all price bulges
brought out enough offertnga to satisfy
demand, leaving the tone at the close Just

NF.W YORK. Feb. 24 The most violent
decline lu stocks which hss taken place In
msnv month ocrurred today a a result
of ths decision of the Interstate Commerce
commission SKalnat the railroads In the
proposed freight Increase. The financial
district was entirely unprepared for so
complete a rejection of the claim of the
transportation companies, and the early
session on the stock exchange waa char
acterized by extensive liquidHtion. wnlcn al
most verged upon demoralization..
Prices of all the active lasues declined 1
to 7 points at the opening on enormous
liquidation, coupled with a series of bear
assaults. This wss followed by a concerted
siipimrting movement, presumably on the
part of most powerful factors In the finan
cial world, which was effective In bringing
about partial recoveries before the end of
th first hour.
In the final hour the market grew atoadily
stronger and recoveries ranging from 1 to
3 point were registered, operations for
th day were the heaviest In many weeks,
aggregating W7.0"0 shares, as compared with
2.,8.(ilO yesterday.
The first effect of the decision was felt
In th ' London market, where American
securities fell from 2 to 8 points on heavy
selling, much of which doubtless resulted
from orders sent from this city over night.
This movement Is said to have aggregated
over 400.000 shares. The heavy selling of
Amerlcansan l,ondon was responsible fo a
sharp advance In foreign exchange here
on purchases of bills for remittance to the
other side.
At lh opening her the features of great

CATTLE Receipts of cattle were very
small as is apt to be the case on a Friday
and there were really not enough of any one
aina on sale to make very much of a show
ing. It was fortunate, however, that such
was the case as the demand has not been
very active any day this week, while the
tendency haa been steadily lower on all
kinds of killing cattle. With lighter re
ceipts today the market was given a sort of
breathing spell and as a result the few
cattle here generally sold in about the
same notches aa yesterday. In other
words all kinds of cattle were Just about
steady.
It would be well for the country to under
stand thoroughly the situation prevailing
In practically all the live stock markets of
the country. The beginning of Lent being
near at hand always has a more or less
depressing effect upon the cattle market.
At the same- time unseasonable weather
haa contributed to decrease the consuming
demand, and this fact, together with the
near aDDroach of Lent, has made packers
more anxious to clean up the surplus beef
already In their coolers than to add any
great quantity to the supply. Thus, as al
ready noted, the demand for cattle this
week has been extremely slow and dull and
the market has steadily declined for the
want of a srood buying support.

KHEKP Supplies of sheep and lambs
were light this morning and a ready de
mand for anything fit to kill was evident
from the opening of the market. All of
the regular buyers helped toward making
an early clearance, bulk of offerings soiling
at prices steady to possibly a shade higher.
In most respects, the general trade was
little different from that of yesterday,
barring a greater degree of activity due to
scsnt receipt s.
fc,wes that proved a drug on the market
at 13.76 yesterday, sold at 14. Indicating a
quotable top of 14.25. This comparison is
not a fair one, however, as inuulry for
ewes yesterday was decidedly slack with
prices more or less erratic. Wethers mid
aa high as 34.26 and strictly choice handy
grades were wanted around 14.40.
Oood Iambs were not very plentiful, but
the few sales that were made In this branch
of the trade held firm, quality considered.
nonie Inquiry was made for toppy kinds
at I5.9O04S.OO. and the high limit may safely
be placed at the latter figure. Volume or
feeder business has been very small lately.
aa neither the demand nor the supply has
been large enough to put the market on
a working basis.
For the week total receipts are moderate,
bulk of the run consisting of fed western
stock. Demand from packers has been
rather uncertain, viewing the week as a
whole, but little permanent change In val
ues has resulted. Present prices ate Just
about steady with those of a week ago.
