CHICAGO GRAIN AS U PROVISIONS
Feat a res of the Trading: and Cloalnc
Prlrea on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, Feb. 1. Predictions of a cold
wave southwest put up the price of wheat
today. There Is a total lack of snow
covering In that section, accordingly fear
wa roused for the winter crop. Latest
futures left the market 'c to He higher
than twenty-four hour previous, with
corn dearer by Ho to He Oats, however,
lost u to Sc and provision finished 7 Vie
to 17H0 decline.
Noth withstanding a widespread Impres
sion that the big longs were marketing
their wheat on the swells, popular senti
ment waa more friendly to the cereal from
the start. Lighter primary receipt had
a good deal to do with bringing about this
state of affairs. Arrivals of cara north
west, for example, were only 2G5 today as
against 4.M a year ago. Then, too, ship
ments from liuasia and Rounianla already
reported as being stopped by heavy Ice.
Just before midday open selling by longs
caused a setback, but commlalson buying
led to a siirprlslnr recovery In the enT
May ranged from 9tc to fhe and closed
firm; hc net higher at MS.
Jn corn light sales by the country made
speculative buying of futures good. Short
age of storage facilities at Omaha acted
somewhat as an offset. Fluctuations for
tVje May option ran from 4!So to totjiViOHc
with the close firm at 60c. a net gain of
1m Cash corn waa In fair demand. NJ.
2 yellow finished at 47&474c.
Oats were extremely weak suffering from
much liquidation and short selling. High
and low points for May were MHc and
):"i,c with latest transactions He down at
s;:'vj:cp.;o.
Frovlsiona sagged because of selling due
to heavy January receipt of hog. After
the final gong, pork was 15c to 17'c under
Inst night and there wa a decline shown
of 7!t to 10c In both lard and ribs.

justify the break, of course, but dlspltr
these fait, the market, as a whole, did
not exhibit Tery much freedom. Bulk
rlesred only after an hour or two had
been wasted In dickering.
Packers supported the main trade. If the
largest purchases may be credited with
that description. The few scattered londs
bought on shipping and speculative ac

lard grades had to move at 37 20 and less,
quality and weight determining the price.
The market closed at the low pulnt of
the day, many of the late sale showing a
decline of JOifi 3.S0. It wa. In fct. the
worst market experienced at this point In

CATTLE Conditions In the cattle market
were very much the same as noted yester
day. Recelpta were again very large, mak
ing the total for the three days 19.200 head,
which was about the same as for the cor
responding days last week, but larger than
a year ago by 9,000 head. As was the case
yesterday morning many of the trains were
late In arriving at the yards and the cattle
were stringing In all the forenoon. At the
same time buyers were very slow and back
ward about getting started, naturally being
In no hurry to fill orders until most of
the cattle were In aight, which would give
them a larger number from which to make
selections. Thus the forenoon wore away
without very much business being trans
acted and It was well along toward mid
day before stock began moving very freely
toward the scales. Owing to the continued
large receipt and breaking markets at
other points the feeling here was again
weak and lower
When the trade waa once under way, the
market On beef steers, cows and heifers,
in fact on practically all kinds of killing
cattle, was- 10l5o lower than yesterday
morning. As compared with yesterdav's
very slow and mean close, there was not
so much difference as that. - It would,
however, be perfectly safe to quote the
market as generally 26c lower than Mon
day. The best feeders remained about steady
and as high aa $6.05 was paid for a very
good four-load bunch. On the other hand,
stnekers were slow and. If anything, a
little lower, especially the common kinds.

RHEKP Some Improvement In the tone
to demand was evident In the sheep barn
this morning. Anything of good dressing
appearance meeting with a fairly active
inquiry from the start. Supplies were lib
eral with assortment about the same as
usual. Several strings of good to choice
lambs were available, but prime, handy
heen were not very plentiful.
Steady prices were paid, as a rule, lambs
and sheep selling equally wen. leanings
with some weight moved at and around
11 60. and ewes were quotable as high as
