CHICAGO. Jan. 27. President Taft's mea

) nut on the free list led to serious mis
Hivinirs todav on the part of owners here,
'Die market closed weak after unloading by
timid holders. Ite prices were almost
the lowest of the session and showed a
net loss of lV&lHo to lc a bushel com

Corn finished H.o to VeNo down and oats
off "Ac to VaWaC. The end of the day left
provlalona generally SV?fUic less expensive,
hut pork for January delivery was bid up
$1.60 a barrel.
Heretofore wheat traders had been in
clined to take reciprocity talk as having
only a remote interest and not directly
bearing upon dally quotation. The presi
dent's action, however, was generally ad
mitted to have put the question on a dif
ferent footing. Leading- long gave enough
support to the market to prevent heavy
short selling, but smaller speculative own
ers let go of holdings to. an extent that
gave evidence of decided encouragement.
Other Influences that developed were nearry
all of a bearish kind. Argentina shipments
proved even larger than the total predicted
and the total amount of cargoes from In
dia and Australia reached proportions
hardly less formidable. Domestic news as
lo the demand for cash wheat was de
pressing. Kansas City reported prices
there 2o lower with only 3 cars of the day's
receipts Bold and undisposed of. May
options here ranged from i WSo to 9840

The oats trade shriveled down to almost
nothing. May varied between 84o and

tdlKtt - The usual "Friday" tone to
heep and lamb trade was evident this
ng.
nounced because of a few doubles of stale
stuff carried over from estrrday's mean
close. Fresh supplies were light and con
sisted largely of sheep and yearlings.
All of the regular burets seemed to be
on the outside of the market from the
start, with th result that movement waa
very slow throughout. A few of the better
offerings attracted bids, but actual sales
were at no time higher than those at the
finish yesterday, hulk of business being
anna on a quotably steady basis. Toppy
ewea aold aa high as 83. 76, with less desir
able kind around 33.40. Wethera and vear
llngs also ruled lower than earlier Iti the
week, as Is Indicated by salea and quota
tions following.
There were few lamb included in the run
and, aa the lambs market baa had a double
aspect all through the week, It is rather
difficult to quote prlcea with any degree of
accuracy. In a general way, choice handy
lambs would do well to reach 3H.IW. while
the heavy grade re slow at 3l.0Pifl.60 less.
As compared with last week's close,
weighty la nibs are selling some lower with
handy kinds steady to strong.
Total receipts for the five davs are
safely normal, the big end of the mn con
sisting of sheep snd yearlings. Until yes
terday the demand for stock of this de
scription wa ample and fairly active. Yes
terday's slumpy close wiped out any earlv
strength, however, and present values are
all of 15o lower than a week ago.

were small, but tne total for the weeK, 24,
luu head, shows a gain of about 3.7U0 head
over last week and of almost o.uOU head
over a year ago. In other words the re
ceipts of cattle so lar this week are the
largest that they hava been lor a numper
of weeks back.
There were hardly enough beef steer on
sale this morning to have very much in
fluence on the trade and the market was
really without any especially new or in
teresting features. Aa a rule the cattle
sold In about the same nothches as yester
day. The advance made earlier in the week
has been lost and prices are now not very
much different from what they were at
the close ot laat week.
The offerings of cow stuff were very poor
In quality and the market was slow and
dull aa usual on Friday. Frlcea were, con
sidering the quality, not much different
Irom tnose prevailing yesterday. As wa
I ho case with beef ateera the market I
now auout where ll wa at the close of last
week.
There were very few fresh receipts of
stocker and feeder and not many wanted.
Th feeling on that kind of cattla waa
both dull and weak ana price are 16$26o
lower than the close of last week. Thin
Blocker have suffered the moat deoltne and
they are safely 26o lower than last week.
