SILO EXHIBIT IS ATTRACTIVE Shows Easiest and Chrnpest Means of Storing Corn Crop Without Loss. SILAGE IS FULL OF NUTRIMENT lnp Is Taken from Field When Hlch eat la Food Valart o Other ntaka( Prod area Progaet So I nlform. Every farmer who visits the Lsnd Khow will be attracted to the silo exhibit which has been Installed on th balcony floor of th Auditorium. Th silo has been tn nso on the farm for a long time, but unfor tunately It has been adopted only by thosn farmers who have reduced rattle raising to a science. The object of th silo exhibit Is to familiarize the stock feeders with th merits of the silo In provld'ng feed fur their stock, and Prof. C. W. Mellck of th state agricultural college la In chargo to deliver lectures and give vis-tors all the Information they desire. I. oaa la Minimised. The silo Is the easiest and cheapest nieans of storing the corn crop; the stock eat leaves, stalks and husks; It la the only means known by which live stock can lm Induced to eat the entire crop corn, col,, leaves, husk and stalk. Early beginners frequently cut and fill their silos when the corn Is too green. In tha early uss of silos this caused sonn complaint, but today as people have prac tice It Is found that the corn should get fully ripe, and In fact should one seek to have his crop mature better, but Instead nf getting sufficient moisture the corn In n measure dries up, the farmer can then secure good ensilage by adding a little water much better. In fact, than were it put In green and watery. In fact a ca- Is known where a large feeder placed his corn In large shocks, securely bound them, and filled his silo the second time, using as near aa he could estimate about thirty two gallons of water to each ton of en silagefermentation set. In, It got hot and was pronounced excellent ensilage at the dairy meeting In Albert Lea by professors Shaw and Hsecker. 'More lalur aa Fond. In the making of corn Into silage the entire plant Is taken from the field at the time when It contains nearly Its maximum of digestible nutrients, enabling the feeder to have at his command In convenient form, a palatable and succulent form of roughage, which more nearly corresponds with pasture grass than does any other food stuff. The silo af folds, then, a means of adding one-fourth to one-third to the feeding value of corn, the chief forage Plant. No other method of handling roughage produces so uniform a product. In an experiment at the Kansas station a value of 15 & per ton was obtained In feed ing tallage) to fattening cattle. Prof. Ar L. Haecker of the Nebraska Ag ricultural college says, "oao ton of stlar cost to put up 61 cents, one ton of ha i.o, one ton of silage occupies flfiv ti-.-i one ton of hay occupies 500 cubic lei-t. Lntu tne teeder can find a food e,mi i corn silage for even twice the cost, he ha, I better seriously consider the silo. .n acre or corn put In the silo I value at t55." Then comparing It with pasture, he ays: "Whereas it rnnini ,-., i..n. three acres to pasture a cow a year, aii acre In silage yielding onlv clirhi in. ,.111 provide roughage for two animals for a year, and the land will maintain with Ho use of the silo practically six times as many cattle as It will under the present pasturage system." The effect of ensilage noon din-eat i 1. caused by ths chemical changes, and the teeaing value or silage Is In a large mcas ure due to Us compsratlve richness In nutrients especially suited for th nourish. ment of cattle. Its ease of digestion as com pared with dry food, Its palatablllty due to Its aroma and succulence, and ih. m..i that It aids In cooling the system and keep ing iree 01 errete material and keeping the circulation active. Silage fed ewes usually produce atrong and vigorous lambs and as In the case of milch cows, silage la a satisfactory and economical fond t.,r milk production. Cheaper than I'aalnrr. The greater number of head the more feed re quired, therefore the entire iirnivr,.m.. rows down to the question of what la ths moai economical feed, considering cost and food value. Repeated experiments and demonstra tions have proved that a good ration for fattening cattle, weighing 1,000 pounds, and the cost of such ration Is as follows: Fhii."'
