NKW VOIIK. Jan. 24,-The intercut of the
financial cominunltv today converged
largely around the W.iWO.iiou Issue of New
York city 4'4 per cent bonds. Pealing in
the "recelidh" were on a very large scale
at tho highest prices yet recorded and fore
shadowed a most successful outcome.
I'he sum total of subscriptions was pron-
ablv several tlmea greater than the amount
offered. Tho most gratifying feature of
the offering was the large number of for
eign bids in hich French financial In
terests are reported to be especially prominent.
fhe Hock market Itself waa distinctly
apathetic on a vr light volume of busi
ness. Prices ivcvcd Irregularly anl In a
very narrow groove with the tendency
towards further reaction. Trading con
tinued dull throughout the late session and
the market closed dull and unsettled.
The Inflow of money to this center today
waa smaller than has recently been the
esse, but the banks continued to gain on
operations with the sub-treasury and in
recelnts from tho Interior. No change In
rates for money on time or call was re
ported. Foreign exchango was firm, with
an advance of 10 to 1ft points tor demand
sterling on further offerings on commercial
Mils.

The pressure continues very high over
the central and eastern portions of the
cotmtry. The weather ha cleared In the
eastern portion, but continues unsettled In
the lower valleys and southern states, and
rains are general this morning from Texas
over the gulf section to the south Atlantic
coast. It I generally clear in the upper
valley, but i unsettled throughout the
mountains and west to the coast, and rain
and snows are falling on the Pacific slope.
Temneratuieu are much higher every
where, except along the lower Atlantic
coast, and In the extreme northwest. A
very decided fall In temperature has oc
curred within the Inst twenty-four hour
in the western Canadian provinces. A
barometric depression has appeared on the
north Pacific coast, and Is moving in over
the northwest, but with the high pressure
that overlies the country east of the Kocky
mountains, the Indications are favorable
for" continued fair weather in this vlrlnity

MottS turner order from loesl quarter
produced a demand for Iioks this morning
t lint was not only ample, but fnlrly artlvi
as well. Movement was featured by free
dom from the .'art and prices ruled slightly
higher on all weights. Hulk sold strong to
a nickel belter, some business being done
on both sides of this spread.
Shlppera operated cautiously throughout
and purchased less than 10 per rent of total
receipts. Quality of the run was good as
usual and consisted largely of animals nn
tha mixed butcher and bacon order. Rii
celpta were rather hctvy, but despite this
fact clearance waa made In very good
aeHson.
