The prospects for the family dinner of
the Commercial cluh becoming an annual
affair do not aeem to be br:ght. Judging
by the tenor of th conversation e tha
weekly meeting yesterday. It was ad
mitted by all that the function lsst Feb
ruary was an undoubted success and did
much to promote amicable feelings In
business circles.
"It was a ninety days' talk." said one
member yesterday, "nnd helped the cluh
greatly." But the Issue seems to be tha
Oiiestlon of cost, and If the business men
of the city do not agree in help out the
club in this regard the dinner Appears to
be lead. so far as this year Is concerned
A committee has been appointed to Inter
view the merchants, with the object of
getting them to asalat. The Intention I
to give the dinner at a popular price and
that should the price not cover the cost
the merchants should guarantee the club
agalnat loss. If the family dinner If not
to be held, there Is prospect of a dinner
of the club member themselves.
The question of the transfers by Die
cross-town line In South Omaha is Still
under consideration.

the discovery of a gambling plac9 In the

covery waa made by Joseph Koplets, a
real estate man. who yesterday morning

ing Into his office. Going on a tour of In
vestigation he found that the water had
been left running In a basin In a room on
ft floor above his place of business. Rut
he made th additional discovery of all th
evidences that a poker game had been
carried on until early In the morning.
Chips, cigar butfs and rigaret ends lit
tered the floor. He called In the chief
of police and hence the action of the head
of the force.
Mandamo Against Police Hoard.
Attorney J. Dean Ringer filed yesterday
a petition for a mandamus against the
Fire and Police board to compel It either
to make Casper Ltikowskl pay $1,000 Into
th city treasury or cancel his license and
close Ms place of business at 606 North
Thirty-third street. This step la another
proceeding In the fight over this saloon
license, which lias been going on for
month. Casper's brother, Thomas, waa
In the Initial stage granted th license for
the place and paid the money. Ha was
ousted when lis transferred the treasurer's
receipt over to hi brother. The board
thereupon transferred the license to him,
and on th advloe of City Attorney Mur
phy the board hold it cannot demand two
payment for the one license. The matter
I listed for trial before Judge Day Jan
uary .

Superintendent of School N. M. Graham
received word yesterday that the wife of
hi brother, R. H. Graham, who I super
intendent of schools at Wymore, Neb., had
died. Superintendent and Mrs. Graham
will leave South Omaha today for th
funeral.
Th much talked of Shamrock club basaar
has been postponed Indefinitely to make
the way clear for he proposed basaar of the
local asrle of the Fraternal Oredr of
Eagle. President Corrlngton states that
th Shamrocks will us every effort to
make the Eagles bazaar a success.
An oyster supper was given the member
of the Jolly )ieven club Wednesday night
at the home of Orrin I'addock. 2C18 B
street. South Omaha. The club haa been
disorganized for nearly two yeara on ac
count of Its members becoming separated
through various business calls, and as
all the members but one were in tiie city
for the holidays, the supper was glvr.n to
let them have an opportunity of meeting
again. Thoi-e present were Harry ('revis
ion, Ralph Copenharve, Gordon Ingraham
Edward Caliiil, Russell Clark. Fran It
Henry, Rusaell Phllp, Walter Bllas. Leo

violent earthquake in th province of Ells
today, causing heavy damage to buildings.
The government has sent help.
The province of Elis Is on the west coast
of the Peloponnesus, watered by the
Alpheu and Peneus end containing th
valley of Olympta. Th capital I Pyrgos.
In ancient geography It capital wa Ells,
which lay at th foot of a steep hill. 5"0
feet high, surmounted by a citadel and a
temple of Athena. The alte of th long
decayed town of Ell I now occupied by
th little place called Palaoopolis. The
capital, Pyrgos, haa a population of 1.'.7u0
and consists mainly of one long street
crowded with warehouses.
