CHICAGO ORAID AND PROVIHOItS
Featares of the Trading: ! Cloataaj
Prlcea on Board of Trade,
CHICAt.O, Dec. 29. Because of a oold
wave predicted for exposed winter crop
states and on account ot Manitoba export
rumors, wheat today developed decided
atrength. The close waa firm at the top
prlcea of the session, with a net advance
of lc to lVkC Latest sales of corn showed
a gain of rac, as compared with last
night; oats a rise of Vic to S'aHc, and pro
vlsions varying from liVitrfOc decline, to an
Increased cost of 7H(j;10c.
There waa big buying of both wheat and
corn by the leading bulls. Primary re
ceipts were small, notably In the north
west, and there was reaaon for belief that
salea of cash wheat here were larger than
reported. Talk of reduced estimates on the
Argentina crop had considerable effect and
so also did mention of better demand In
European centers. Statements that thirty
boat loads of Manitoba wheat had been
worked for export had a tonio effect. Ad
ditional buying force came through visions
of possible disaster from a sudden hard
freeie.
Purchases from prominent houses took
on large proportions, .and In the last half
of the day made the market almost buoy
ant. Tha may option ranged from Mtric
to 97VIC, closing lVc net higher at 871ic.
Foreigners wera ea'.d to be buying corn
here today In consequence of alleged losses
ta the- Argentina crop. Prices for local
account reached a huge total, two houses
alone taking more than 2,000.0(i0 bushela.
May fluctuated between 47c and 48'4o and
closed 4c up at 48tc. Cash corn did not
follow the upturn In futures. No. 2 yellow
finished at 4)Q46c.
Oats made a fair response to the bulge
In other grain. May aold from 33T4o to
MUc. and in the end was Ho net higher
at :t4i,'ri,l4'4c.
Provisions were active, but Irregular.
When the day ended, pork was left the
name an last night to 7Vc higher, lard up
2'?c to 7Vf l0c and ribs at ZWqkxs decline,
to a nickel advance.

NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Prices Eise Generally stud Movement
is Unusually Comprehensive.
USI0N PACIFIC IN GOOD DEMAND
Coal Mock Comaplewona for Activity
and Vaderlrlnsi strength Read
Ins Boagkt by Traders In
Advance of Report.
NEW YORK. Dec. 29-ln the stock market
today prices rose very generally and the
movement was unusually comprehensive.
The rise embraced not only the standard
railway shares, but took In many of the
southern and southeastern Issues and
various specialties as well.
The further gain In Southern railway
preferred was coincident with reports that
dividends on the stock are likely to be
resumed soon.
Canadian Pacific was active at a higher
price. Union Pacific and Southern Pacific
were apparently In demand at smart ad
vance in the face of distinctly unfavor
able exhibits.
The coal stocks were conspicuous for their
activity and underlying strength and Read
ing waa bought by traders who professed
to have advance Information that the com
pany's showing for November would be
more than gratlrylng. The market closed
with prices generally at or near the best.
London was a buyer on balance, but not
enougt to call for detailed comment. The
Rank of England's proportion of reserve
to liabilities fell to 87.90 per cent, a decline
of per cent from the previous week,
but compared favorably with the corres
ponding week last year. The bank's total
reserve decreased over 87.00O.OuO and its
bullion holding decreased by 8,7.000,000.
Clearances by the Ixmdon banks for the
week were almost 8300,000 less than for the
same week last year.
A striking feature of the weekly state
ment of the Bank of France was Its enor
mous Increase of about 8-14.000.000 in bills
discounted. Belated demands for money
caused a flurry In call loans for which the
rate advanced to 6 per cent. It Is not
Improbable that a further slight dlnturb
ance of local monetary conditions may be
witnessed tomorrow, but in the Judgment
of bankers, the higher rate Is not likely
to last long.
The band market was Irregular, with es
pecially large dealings In Norfolk & West

With ao many cattle on sale on a Thurs
day there was every reason tills morning
for anticipating a weaker market, but
fortunately for the selling Interest, the
demand proved to be more active than an
ticipated and a a reult desirable beef
cattle aold in very good season la the
morning, at practically steady prices.
There waa, In fact, not enough change In
either direction to talk about. Right good
well fattened steers sold up as high as
$6.30, while there was quite a sprinkling ot
cattle good enough to bring $6.00.
Cows and heifers were also free sellers,
and they too commanded steady prices.
The offerings, as a rule, were oleaned up
In good season In the mcrnlng, the large
proportion of the receipts having; changed

The supply of Blockers and feeders was
not very large, while the demand continue
quite brisk the same as lt haa been for a

that cattle of that description also sold In
auout the same notches aa yesterday.

HtMl.S Further losses were experienced
In hog price this morning, freMi decline
applying to all weight and ranging iruin
Dime to Ijc. Heavy receipts helped to
break the market, but the more Important
btrarlKh factor teemed to be the alumpy
condition of trade in the east, necessitating
cheaper cost at this point.
Packers were th- largest buyers, as
usual, and purchased the big end of the
fupply at the lower figure. The demand
from shippers was largely of a speculative
nature. Movement waa reasonably active
from the tart and a very fair clearance
was made b, fore midday.
ileavlea had to tell around $7.4oti7.50.
witii rough and extreme hi-avie-i around
$7.35. Good mixed gradf brought 87. 55 and
better. The bet linht hog on sale topped
at 17 70, with smooth butchers selling In
practically the same notches aa good
lights. As compared with last week's close
current prices era Just about a dim lower,
viewing the mnrket as a whole.

lower, featured
the trade In both sheep
ana lambs this morning. None of the
regular buyers showed very inucli Interest
and the resulting market was difficult for
sellers from the start. All classes were
Involved In the break, but reductions on
lambs, even thouirh offerings of this de
scription were limited to a few loads, ap
peared even larger than declines on sheep.
Total receipt were fully normal and con
sisted largely of various kinds of sheep.
Ewes and wethers dropped to levels about
l.K) lower than those noted yesterday,
heavy grades proving especially slow.
Good ewes had to sell around 83.50 and
heavy wethers at 83 90 Indicated an extreme
quotable top of $4.10 on choice handy
weights. Yearlings, the best on sale, had
to move under ayha $5.00 mark, but prime
ones would doubtless command $5.16 or
better.
Iaunb trade ruled around ln25o lower,
top quotations dropping to $6.00fj.10. Even
at these levels local prices are well In
line with those at eastern points, as a com
parison of sales will Indicate.
Nothing In the wav of stock suitable, tn

ing the situation unchanged. Good feeders
are wanted at figures little different from
those In force on fair to good quality

.County Surveyor Mart" yeslerday railed
the city engineering department's attewt
tlon to an Inexhaustible and nearby aouroa
of supply of high grade crushed stone for
concrete work. It Is a huge ledge of flna
limestone that appears to hava been com
pletely forgotten after having one been
the source of all of the building stone used
in Council Uhiffs for many year. Tha
quarry lies Just east of the city, between
thn old Chautauqua grounds and rark's
mill on the Milwaukee and Rock laland
trackage. The working face of tha ledge,
at one point la within 100 feet of tha main
line of the Milwaukee railroad. Tha ledge
lies on the W. S. Mayne farm, In poBsea
slon of the present owner for mora than
twenty-five yeara.
The last time the quarry was worked
was when Its owner at that time had a
contract to supply the building stone used
In the foundation of the Ogden house. Tha
stone foundation ot tha old high school
building, which rose ten feet above the
ground, and alt of the cut stone trimmings
used In the construction of tha building,
came from this quarry. It was drawn
upon also for the stone used In the founda
tions of all the buildings erected In tha
city forty or more years ago. The founda
tion for the Officer home on Willow
avnue Is made of the same material. All
of these foundations have withstood tha
attacks of time and the elements and ara
as solid today as when laid, many of them
more than half a centilry ago. Tha qual
ity and durability of tha tton ara thug
fully attested. Tha quantity I said tt be
sufficient for all the demands that Councll
Bluffs contractors may make upon It for
the next century, and tha quarry ilea ao
close to town that the cost of transport la
reduced to a minimum. -,e -
The last time the quarry - waa worked,
when the big blocks were taken out for
the Ogden house, tha pit at ona point waa
sunk to the water level, and It waa at
that point that the highest grade of build
ing stone was encountered. Huge blocks
were quarried, glistening whlta and almost
of the consistency of marble. No attempt
has ever been made to determine tha thick
ness of the ledge by the use of a drill, but
the fact has been demonatrAted by artesian
well boring that a limes tons stratum 600
feet thick underlies Council Bluffs.
No explanation Is given why this valu
able deposit has been, permitted go long to
remain untouched, while atone for . con
crete work has been shipped Into the city
from points hundreds of miles distant.
