Miss Julia Officer, whose efforts to In
terest the youth of Council Rluffs In mor
ally and physically healthfJl amusements,
and whose philanthropic efforts have
sought to benefit future generations, has
come forward with a practical plan to
increase popular Interest In the Mg swim
ming school that was opened yesterday at
the Young Mens Christian association
building. She ha provided two valuable
gold and silver medsls to be contested for
during the week, under conditions yet to
be fixed and which are practically left
to Physical Director Pterson and the physi
cal department committee. The award of
the medals will be surrounded by con
ditions that will draw out the best qualities
of the contestants. These condition, and
the rules governing the contest., will be
announced before the middle of the week.
Hebden H. Corean, son of the noted
aquatlo writer and natatorlum Instructor,
reached Council Bluffs at 7 80 yesterday
morning and was at once taken In hand
by Director Picrson and other associ
ation worker. After breakfast he was
taken' to the association building and
shown the swimming pool and told of the
arrangements that had been perfected to
aid In thia work here during the week.
He was well pleased with the opportuni
ties presented, and expressed his confi
dence that when lie closed his work here
on Saturday night, many .Council Bluffs
men and boys would be thankful for the
chance opportunity that made it possible
for him to come here and give week's
free swimming instructions.
There was an eager crowd of boys wait
ing at the building to take the first scien
tific lessons In the art of keeping afloat.
and It was not long until a big class was
splashing In the waters of the steam
heated pool. Each swimmer discovered In
know anything about swimming, and the
way Mr. Corsan went at the work of un
learning them quickly convinced each
youngster that he fully understood his
business. Th. pool full of boys became
eager pupil, when victim was seised
by th. athletic Instructor, and all enjoyed
the revolutionary process that was In
stantly set up to get that victim back
to the period of his present Incarnation,
when ha couldn't swim a lick.
Tha baslo rule required tha planting of
self-confidence in each boyish heart, and
the lesson, that led to the desirable ac
quisition were occom panted by th. con
stant suggestion, "you can't drown If you
don't want to," and "you won't have any
trouble If you don't get .cared."
Tha lessons were those of a master, In
tensely practical and brought to the level
of .very boy, and were of such a character
that every spectator received and assimi
lated a good part of th. Instructions.
On Tuesday, Thursday and .Vturday
night, lesson, will be given for employed
boya and young men, whose duties pre
vent them attending days. These lessons
will lant from 7:30 until 8:30. They are also
for business men and all others who de
sire to acquire real science In th. art of
swimming, and they ar. .11 wholly free.
During the afternoon, Mr. Corsan went
to Omaha to confer with th. Young Men'.

a view of arranging a similar aerie, of
free swimming lessons. Th. Omaha as

probably arrange to use Mr. Corsan time

Mrs. Matilda Wallace, the aged mother
of .1. E Wallace. e-nlor member of the
firm of Wallace A Grout, owners of the
Bluff City laundry, died last evening al
the home of her son, 31.'. Oakland avenue,
after an Illness of thiee months. She waa
78 years old and death waa due to the in
firmities of old age. Mr. Wallace had
been ft resident ot Council Bluffs since
IRtt.l. making her home during the greater
part of her residence here with her daugh
ter, Mrs. John C. Small.- She wa born In
Madison, lnd., where he united with Ihe
Methodist church, and had been ft con
stant worker and member since her girl
hood. She Is survived by four children,
two sons and two daughters The other
son, A. O. Wallace, reside In Portland.

George W". Turner, residing Just east of
the city, drove his family horse to town
Sunday night to attend church, accompa
nied by his family. Ten minutes after he
had hitched on Broadway an unidentified
thief stole It and drove away. The horse
is a hlgh-splrlted, valuable animal, and
was driven down Broadway at auilp that
gratified the ambition of his new driver to
pass an Omaha street car. The thief w.s
evidently unacquainted with Council Bluffs
streets, for when he reached Thirtieth
street he left Broadway and turned toward
Avenue A, mistaking the street railway
bridge over Indian creek for a vehicle
bridge. The horse fell through the tlea
and lay helpless in the middle of the
tracks. The driver, when he realized the.
nature of the accident, jumped from the
carriage and ran away. The street car
that had passed would undoubtedly have
struck the helpless horse If a sharp-eyed
boy had not flagged it Just before the car
reached the curve. The horse wa found
to be painfully Injured and much dlff -culty
was experienced In getting It over th.
