The pressure on United States Steel, the copper Issues, Reading and Lehigh Valley was most pro nounced, though In no instance severe, while such specialties as Consolidated Gas and American Beet Sugar were strong, with gains of a point or two. The whole movement lacked Initiative or purpose, however, and the closing was dull and heavy. Forecasts of the weekly cash movement Indicated a gain by local hanks of 8fi.OW.000 or more, due principally to the recent In flow of money from the middle west. The demand is never very urgent at the holiday season sjid most operators on the market at this time of the year are Inclined to discourage free shipping of stock. There were not enough beef steers In sight this morning to make a market and what few there were sold at about yester day's figures. Cows and heifers also sold about tha same as yesterday, or to put it another way the market today waa steady at yes terday's decline. Stockers and feeders were few and far between, but the feeling on that kind of cattle has been firm all week and every thing that could be called desirable met with very ready sale. Even fairly liberal receipts would have been burdensome. In the first place the local demand Is far from urgent as Is very aid to be the case at this time of the year. To make It still worse the Chicago msrket waa In the worst demor alized condition esterday that it has been in fur a long time back. Reports from there this morning Indicated very liberal receipts and continued weakness In the market. For the selling Interests It Is most unfortunate that shippers hare been rushing so much stuff into Chicago just at this time. While conditions were all pointing to a weaker market there were ao few on sale at this point this morning that the one or two buyer who had use for a few cars were able to cltT.n up everything In the way of 'fresh arrivals at' about steady prices. A pretty gvod kind of lambs sold up to SG.20 with feeding lambs at So. 75 and a pretty fair kind of ewes at $3.65. While the yards will be open on Mon day, the same as any other day, no one Is encouraging shipments of anr extent until the holiday week Is over with. While killers always want a few sheep and lambs during the mid-holiday week the demand, and conaequently the market, la more or less erratic and while prices are sometimes sensationally high they are Just aa apt to be demoralizingly low. DON'S REVIEW OF TRADE Brisk Holiday Retail Distribution Contrasts with Jobbing Tradtv LESS ACTTTTY IN IRON AND STEEL Holiday Period Will t'aaaw Te nrarr Oaaatlan f Operatlone at MMafartttrlnar IMants Re- at Mr t Inn ef Outpat. f NEW YORK. Dec. 23. -Dun g Rerlerer ( Trade tomorrow will say: In snap contrast with the between sea son a slump In jobbing trade Is the brisk holiday retail distribution, which la re ported en.ual to or In excess of laat year. Diminished activity In Iron and steel Is now to be anticipated, yet It Is evident that dullness Is more pronounced than la customary at this season. The holiday period naturally will cause a temporary cessation of operations at manufacturing plants and as rurrent buying is of small proportions, mills and furnaces are e pected to still further restrict their outrut. Pipe Iron has been quite freely taken and Inquiries for a substantial tonnage are reported In eastern territory, but with this exception extreme quietness prevails In the pIk Iron division. Construction ot new battleships will require considerable finished material and It Is estimated that Sho.ikb) tons of material will he needed. Rail contracts are coming forward In mod erate volume, and the outlook for rolling stock Is better. In the textile field the main source) of complslnt comes from the inability of j manufacturers to secure prices for goods I rommensurato with the costs of produc- ' tlon and curtailment Is considered. There Is a moderate business In staple prints, glnnhams are In active request and colored goods are steady, with some forward business already placed by cutters a. r. .miscellaneous export trade Is oulet. In ness continues generally prevalent In th lenther market. A dull market la reported In footwear which la natural, conalderlng the fact that the holidays are at hand. The jobbing trade has been good for Christmas specials and wholesalers anticipate a continued good business following New Tear's. BRADSTHFIF.T'B REVIEW OF TR4DR Active Retail Deraaaid Farther Slowing; Down In Indastry. NEW YORK, Dec. 2S.-nradstreef to morrow will say: Holiday Influences ruled this week and active retail demand contrasts with prs lnventory quiet In the wholesale and Job bing trade, a further slowing down In In dustry over the end of the year period and stagnant speculation In securities and com modities. .Money has eased, while supplies have Increased. Collections have been slightly quickened by Increased circulation of money In lead ing centers. Weather conditions have Im parted activity to the coal trade, but no scarcity Is reported. I Foreign demand for American wheat has I apparently set In strongly at the Paclfio coast and shipments to long-absent cus tomers, such as France and Asia, have been the heaviest In years. Relatively best reports as to current trade come from a few large western centers and. as a whole, from the south, where good results from high-priced cotton yields are In evi dence.
