Queer Tale of Love that Comet in
from a Little Town in
Iowa.
The course of true love ha taken many
queer turns but none that equals the angle
that has suddenly developed In the path
way along which A. A. Churdnn of Chur
dan, la., and Mrs. Ellen Dawson, a widow
of the same town, were slipping surely into
matrimonial bliss. Mrs. Dawson was ar
rested yesterday and taken from a North
western train passing through Council
Bluffs, and was held awaiting the arrival
of the sheriff of Greene county, Iowa, who
promised to be along on a later train from
Jefferson.
Churdun and Mrs. Dawson were on the
way to Los Angeles, where they Intended
to be married and were accompanied by
the 12-year-old son of the woman. The
charge Is conspiracy. Back of It I a tale
of love In the Interior districts, with some
trimmings that miyht he worked up Into
a real romance or a "drammer" If properly
handled.
Churdan Is the founder of the town that
bears his name, and has been some pump
kins In those parts. He was also a barber
and generally prosperous. Mra Dawson
owns a restaursnL Some time ago she
began receiving letters that threatened
many unpleasant things It she did not give
over all other men, forsaking especially
the company of A. A. Churdan, and devote
herself to the writer. A the letters were
not signed she could not make a choice
and stuck to Churdan. Many efforts were
niade to detect the writer, the town author
ltlcs going so far as to employ the services
cf the wisest detective to be had In Des
Moines, but to no avail. The Identity of
the writer 1 still undlvulged, but the let
ters kept coming right along.
Finally Churdan sold his barber shop and
Mrs. Dawson turned her restaurant over to
her daughters, and the couple started to
Los Angeles to be Wed. Then the sheriff
of Greene county broke Into the game and
asked the sheriff of Pottawattamie county
to help by holding the woman. It I now
alleged that she wrote the letters.
No charge Is made against Churdan, bu.
ra declined to be separated from the woman
of his choice and spent the afternoon at
the county Jail waiting with her for the
coming of the Greene county official
Churdan Is 40 years old and looks as If ha
knew his own business. The widow Is
about the same age.

out the 15.0O0 Indebtedness on the new
First Gfrnian Presbyterian church, Twen
tieth and Spruce streets, the church was
dedicated with fitting ceremony, Stindny
Rev. Julius F. Sohwara. the paster, an
nounced that within a week ,or
the remaining 12,600 will le secured.
Because more time than had been ex
pected was taken up In the woik of
getting pledges the dedicatory services,
which were to have been held In the after
noon, were deferred until evening. 1
The afternoon service opened with sing
ing of "All Hall the Power of Jes.is'
Name," nflcr which Rev. Jesse Craig Wil
son, U)0''?rator of the Omaha presbytery,
read a lesson from the scilptures. H. E.
Johnston sang a tenor solo. "Come Vnto
Me."
Rev. Daniel E. Jenkins, moderator of the
Nebraska synod, offered piayer In which
he thanked God for His work In construct
ing the brautlful new church for and
through the people of the consrcgatlon. He
prayed that the people, already amply
rewarded for all their efforts, may be still
further blessed.
Unity of purpose, diversity of action,
love, and encouragement were urged by
Rev. William II. Kearns. superintendent
of home missions of ths Nebraska synod,
In the chief address of the dedicatory
ceremony.

no growth," he said. "I often have heard
ministers complain that they could nccom

of the people. All must be willing to

The scriptural Injunction to love one
another Is as Important as anything in this
book. There must be encouragement. No
one can do much without encouragement,
for everyone grows despondent at times.
Tell your minister you have been helped
by his sermon. He will preach a better
one next Sunday If you do."
Wiping: Debt Off Board.
Rev. Mr. Kearns at the end of his ad
dress produced a huge blackboard on
which he had printed various sums from
IMO down to 11. He called upon the con
gregation to pledge donations that would
wipe out the figures. The Ladles' Aid
society promptly assumsd responsibility for
a donation of 1500. Other church organi
sations offered to wipe out other sums
and many Individuals ordered the minister
to wipe out figures. At 6 o'clock a total
of 12,600 had been pledged. The money Is
to be paid within six months.
The dedicatory service opened with the
confession of faith and the repetition of
the Lord's prayer by all. After the scrip
ture reading Rev. Julius F. Bchwarg pre
sented the keys of the church to the board
of trustees. In so doing bs made a brief
address In which he rejoiced over the near
ness of the church to completion and
praised the trustees and all the people Ot
the congregation for their faithfulness to
their purpose. He then 'dedicated the
building to the service of God and the
Christ, according to the German ritual.
Responsive readings, also a part of the
ritual followed.
Rev Jacob Consett ot Cincinnati tve the
address of the evening, and short addresses
were given by Warren Swltxler, Harry
Fisher and Henry Kelser. The entire dedi
catory services were in German.
Features of the morning service were ad
dresses by Rev. Benjamin B. Boell oi Riley,
Kan., and Rev.. Jacob Conxett of Cin
cinnati.
The church has been built from material
gathered about the city by the pastor and
the people of the congregation. The
material Is old. but of the sort that does
not weaken with years. The total cost of
the edifice, which Is practically completed.
Is under 120,000. Contractor in the begin
ning said It could not be built for less than
!3K,000. . The saving has been made by the
use of old material.

Smuggling Charge

Schwerln, prominent ' oclally In New
York, Baltimore and San Francisco, the
wife of the vice-president and general
manager of the Pacific Mall Steamship
company, escaped having a charge ot
smuggling placed against her by franknex
In answering questions put to her by the
customs men after the discovery that on
landing Saturday night from the liner St.
Paul she had failed to deolare all the
dutiable goods brought home In her
eleven trunk.
In her original declaration Mr.
Schwerln mentioned new gowns to the
mount of 1500. In going through her
effect the inspector found article not
declared. Mrs. Schwerln was given an
opportunity to amend her declaration and
she freely acknowledged that ome ar
ticles bought abroad might have been
omitted, but that ther had . been no In
tent to evade the payment of duty. A
careful examination was made of her
baggage and resulted In the original
declaration being raised by f 1,400. The
additional duty was paid and the baggage
released.

memoration of the seventy-fifth anniver
sary of the consecration of th Rt. Rer.
Jackson Kemper, .the first missionary
bishop of the church, featured th work of
the delegates to the Protestant Episcopal
convention here today.
Tha service took place at St Paul'
cathedral, with Bishop Theodore N. Morri
son as the speaker.
Bishop Morrison was outspoken in bll
declaration for home missions. At on
time during his remark he said:
"I would Impress upon those Interested in.
missionary work my belief that ther 1
more of a field for good and advantageous
work among th negroes of ths United
States than among th people of foreign
countries, and I will urge that missionaries'
work begin at horn."

mond, John Boyle and Joseph Levlln,
Irish members of the British Parliament,
were received as British subjects by Presi
dent Taft Mr. Redmond, leader of th na
tionalist party in Parliament, was ac
companied by Mrs. Redmond. T. P. O'Con
nor was to have been a member of th dele
gation, but could not be present The plan
and progress of th home rule program
were told to the president, but the call
was almost wholly of a social character.
Mrs. Taft and Miss Taft assisted In en
tertaining th guests. Betur calling on
th president, the party were luncheon
guests of A. Shuman, a neighbor of th
president.
