' i riH calling for the submission to
I voters at the fall elect on of the quee
l hi. of annexing South Omaha were filed
In i he office of the county clerk Saturday
morning J and the fiRht fur th Initial atep
toward a Greater Omaha is on.
legality of the petition calling upon the
Hoard of County Commissioners to submit
to the voters at the November general elec
tion the proposition of annexation of South
Omaha to Omaha was brought Into ques
tion Saturday by City Attorney H. C.
Murphy of South Omaha and other South
Omaha nvn who opo. the annexation,
when they filed a pretext against the peti
tion. The ground of the prutent Is that ft)e
petition does not carry the names of 10 per
cent of the qualified voters of the city,
many of tho 7J names on the petition being
the name of men who are not qualified
voters. i
The commissioner deferred action on the
petition for one week anj set next Friday
at 10 a. m. as the time for a hearing on
the protect. The action was taken In a
meeting of the board as a committee of t
whole.
Last night the Greater Omaha Consolida
tion club met In the Manic City and
passed a set of resolutions that are un
m'etakable In tone. They are signed by
the men responsible for the beginning of
the agitation, and who Insist that senti
ment In the packing town leans very
trongly that way. Following la the text
of the resolutions, with the names of the
committee that drew them up and pre
sented them to the meeting:
' Resolution on Consolidation.
The Oreater Omaha Consolidation club
of South Omaha, Including business men,
day laborers, packing house employes, mi
ohanlca and clerks, knowing that the sen
timent of the people of South Omaha for
the consolidation of South Omaha with
Omaha by an overwhelming majority,
deeming It the part of wisdom and to the
Dest interest or an that the city or boutn j
Omaha should bo merged with the city
of Omaha and form one great metropolitan '
city, hereby pledge that we will advance
the cause of consolidation with alt the
power we command that the cause may
triumph as the honest desire of all of the
people of this city. I
While the c!ty of Omaha has been nd-
vanclng in greatness and building up j
tremendously In the last few years, we as I
city have been standing still. We j
now feel sure that we will gain an impetus !
to a greater growth and prosperity by
uniting our enterprises with those of
Omaha and working unitedly for the one !
end or prosperity for all of tha Inhabitants
of one great city.
We believe that we will gain many busi
ness enterprises by our superior location
and vast amount of trackage when the
great enterprises that are readj to com
can advertise their location aa being In
Greater Omaha,
We, being a separate and rival city to
Omaha, cannot expect to have entemrlses
tent to us by Omaha until we are part of
tho city of Omaha. By mutual agreement
Omaha has manifested Its Intention to give
us every advantage in making the merger,
la be adjusted by committers to the satis
faction of all the eltl sens of Oreater
Omaha to be embodied in a new charter.
Including the retention of teachers in the
put-llc schools, the high school, police, fire
men, the present poetofflce, a sub-treasury
and public library.
. Knowing that the courts have held tnat
one city cannot furnish water to another.
as cities are prohibited from doing busl
ines In a commercial way. and knowing
that ws will be without water supply In
case we are not consolidated with the
elty of Omaha, In case the city of Omaha
tmys the water works, we deem It of vast
Importance that we should be consolidated
with Omaha before such an embarrassing
situation confronts us hs a city.
. 'A- general plan for the consolidation of
tha cities of Omaha and South Omaha will
be presented to the voters for their con
sideration and we feel sure that the vn
for the consolidation of the two cities will
be as overwhelming aa the sentiment Is
now in our city.
Believing we have everything to gain
and nothing to lose, we ask that the
people of South Omaha vote for the con
solidation of the two cities In tha coming
November election.
