With many of hla men nursing sore spots
after the mlxup with the alumni Saturday
Coach Miller dispensed with the usual grind
of heavy work and . light , practice proved
a happy relief. ,
'Beginning today the team will begin to
perfect, playa that, will be used most prob
ably next' Saturday against the fast Yank
ton eleven: Worfl comes from the northern
college chat their team Is practically the
same as last season when Crelghton was
only able to 'score one touchdown against
tbem.
Last week' scrimmage with the "come
backs" proved an excellent opportunity for
Coach Miller to; fott the weak points of
his squad. Throughout the coming week
great stress w11)-be laid upon defensive
work, and the various methods of offense
will receive -fionslderAtlon. No doubt Mil
ler will employ omt Notre Dame tactics
of defense that rtll prove valuable on the
Crelghton Una.
Although tha followers of the college
sport havahad .Ittle opportunity of aeelng
the game dialed By the revised rules, yet
the scrimmage on tbe Crelghton campus
Is-asjjtaea'1rlti4 out '- few of
the major points of Interest. The division
of the game Into four quarters may not
meet wirh tfefwnM1 Taor: - The gams be
comes nnusnally'tnonbtdnous and therefore
the spectator hoses Interest. The men do
not leave the field between the first and
second quarters, nor between the third and
last. This time, coupled with the Intermis
sion between the second and third portion,
will undoubtedly prove tedious to those in
the grandstand. ... ; ' '
The new' rule have a decided advantage
In roaklng-the Tlkys- more open. The spec
tator will Jiave every opportunity of watch
ing the carrier ofthe ball, rather than see
ing the mass plays of preceding years.
whereby it was almost Impossible to fol
low a play. Speed and agility will prove
a prominent factor In the game, as more
end plays will be-used this year than, per
haps, ever before. 'The forward pass must
be used more 'cautiously and judiciously
than In the past and line plays will be
eliminated to a certain extent.
Leas work will devolve upon tbe quarter
back, due to the -new ruling, although that
position will most probably be the most
Important on the eleven, k
A radical change this aeaaon Is the non
Interference with the man who receives
tha forward paae. This fact may help the
development of that play to greater ad
vantage than In 'preceding years. Another
profitable change Is that the runner must
not receive manual aid from his teammates.
This eliminates one of the most dangerous
methods of the old game of foot ball, and
should produce ' excellent results In the
field during tha, coming year. It will be
some time, perhaps, before the follower
of the game will beoome acoustomed to the
sWeepins changes, but It Is believed that
foot ball during the coming aeaaon will be
leas dangerous end yet more spectacular.

IDA. GROVE AND EAST DES MOINES
Action of State Capital School In Re
fusing; Date Canaea Surprise.
IDA GROVE. Ia.. Sept. 27. (SDeclal.)-In
view of their old time friendly relations
and games year after year alternating be
tween ues Moines ana here, tne action or
Eaat High in dropping Ida Grove from Its
schedule was a matter of surprise and
much regret here. It waa understood after
the game last year that Ida Grove would
bring East High here this fall and that a
date would be submitted early In the year.
In accord with this understandlnr Sunnr-
intendent Hagler submitted October 29 as
date way last April, ana when no
answer came, sent another letter saying
that if no reply was received Ida Orove
wouia consiaer tne aate as belonging to
hMMl . High. Tne schedule was published
In the state papers with East High having
a place thereon for October 29, and about
a week ago In response to Mr. Hauler's
requeat lor a contract ana some definite
action. Miss Goodrelt, the principal at
East High, blandly writes that she was
not aware that East High considered a
game with Ida Grove this year. At Ida
Grove It looka like a . plain case of cold
reer.
Ida Grove has booked a came here for
October 23 with the Lincoln, Neb., aggre-
Satlon and Is considering games with
maha, North Division of St. Paul and
oak fara. Chicago. Tne schedule is lined
witn tne exception or Tnanksirivina; and
It Is probable that one of these bin out
side schools will be brought In here for
mat aay. ti
