That Is what la hap fcn.ng fiom day to day. Profound Indlf leitne Is maintained by the general public and the capital Interests more Immediately concerned with the affairs of corporations. Only pactional price changes again proved to be the outcome at the end of the day. The first move of the market toward a lower level was precipitated hy and wan the response to tho remarks by Commis sioner Lane yesterday at the commerce commission hearing Into the railroad rates at Chicago. His assertion that "we must work out thta problem on other lines than by the propovl method of raising the tar iffs" wis self d on as definitely outlining the decision of the commission on the peti tions now before It for specific advances In rates. The quick check to the downward movement showed there was no widespread agreement with thla view. The particular weakness In Amalgamated Copper waa due to the reports that the Calumet and Hecla had lowered Ita aaklng price for lake copper by He to 12c. The nervousness of the speculation over the copper situation permeates the whole speculative fabrio and any signs of a break In the copper market are feared for the widespread consequence which might ensue. Many wild rumors were revived In con nection with the speculative outburst In Reading, Including capital readjustment, distribution of "concealed assets" and so on. Bonds were steady. Total sales par value, 13.26.000. United States bonds were un changed In the bid price on call. Number of sales and leading quotations on stocks were as follows: galea. This makes trie total for the five days tfus week 42,032 head, the largest of any similar period so far this year and larger than tor Uie same time a year ago by 10,000 head. With a heavy fail of rain all tne morning, cattle naturally looked loan Inviting tnmi usual, but still there was a very fair de mand for killers of all kinds, both cows and heifers, aa well as beef steers. Packers ail seemed to be in need of supplies and offer ings as a rule changed hands In fair season in the morning at pitces Just about steady with yesterday. There was, in fact very little in the way of any new or Interesting features connected with the trade. With stockers and feeders the altuation was very much lees favorable to tho selling interests. The attendance of country buyers was very small and speculators having quite a good many cattle on hand were not Inclined to Increaae their holdings with the prospects favorable to having to keep their cattle over until. next week. Hence the trade on all kinds of stockers and feeders was extremely slow and dull, with prices lower all along the line. It waa very late In the day before very many stock and feeding cattle had changed hands. Filial clentnnce was not ms'lo until Intc In the nfternoon. The week's triiic has teen very uneven fr.un st.irt ti finish, ia:ht lambs and old common ewes selling for feeding purposes it uncertain prices throughout. Declines hav e been severe on this class of stock and the sprratl In quotations is much wide than it wns last week. Pest klrds of fevler sheep have held up fairly well, however, find net flecilnrs nre little worse than KVif l.V. A string of eher" iHmbs went bnrk Into the country at $6.60 yesterdnv. but the shipment carried a fair killing top and every animal was a good one. Fat sheep are closing a little lower thnn they were n week bru. Bulk of good ewes have been selling around $3.50 with bulk of good wethers around $4.00. Fat lambs, on the other hand, were sought eagerly at all t mes and are closing firm to possibly a lit tle higher. Good yearlings have been rela tively scarce, but choice handy weights are safely quotable up to $5.50. Aside from a few odds and ends left over at the end of each session, very good clear ances were made on day of arrival. In quiry from country buyers, while more dis criminating, has been broad, nnd packers have also bought freely as a rule.
